Taistorm
Time for another update. Rust work is pretty much all done. Here are some progress pics of the sill workAnd here are the reinforced mounts for the steering setup
Taistorm
And here are some pics of the transmission tunnel all finished, awaiting paint..The trans tunnel is large enough to adapt an FD box if I look at upgrading down the track.
Taistorm
And the lip for the shelf at the top of the firewall all tidied up..Apologies for the potato pics, lighting was exceptionally poor as well as the sun was beaming on half the car :/. Very happy with how it has turned out so far. Thinking of carrying out some further work on the engine bay such as welding welding in a blanking plate on the center section and passenger side section of the firewall and caps across the top of the chassis rails to make things smoothed out and better to look at.Next step is sorting out the guard work and getting it back on it's feet. A large section of the rear guard flares will need to be cut and adapted to the rear door to make it fit. They will need a decent amount of playing around with to get to fit right. They will need to be shortened and a notch will need to be taken out to match with the body lines. The fronts will require a notch taken out of the rear of the inner guard for clearance most likely as well with further shaping required. The body is starting to take shape! Thanks for looking.Tai
Taistorm
Hey everyone, Finally managed to scrounge up some tyres for this. Not many options being 14"! Ended up getting 205 55's for the rear (225s are discontinued now) and have 185 60's for the front on order. I was pretty worried at first as thought the stretch would be hard case but it actually sits nicely. Here's the old girl with the 205's mocked up on the 9" on the front and 10" on the rear. You will notice we have been mocking up the replacement/incorrect front guards as well and have taken out a section from the rear guards.

Taistorm
And now playing around with the front guard flares. In all honesty they didn't look quite right with the dimensions. What we have now done is notch back the rear section leaving the back of the wheel exposed, gives it a bit of a more Rocket Bunny style look but i think it has come out all good. Obviously it still needs to trimmed back and sit more flush on the guard but it gives you an idea. The rears have turned into a real headache now so not 100% on how it is going to be approached. We should be able to get away with the whole flare bolted on but the main concern is where it splits for the door to be able to open and close. The issue is maintaining strength after cutting it up and also expansion from heat and having part of it popping out and looking odd. Wish I had a 2 door, would have made things a lot easier. With the ride height we are aiming for around 150mm, would love to go lower but if you have seen my driveway you will realise that will be impossible. Will see how it goes anyway...Also on the look out for a ducktail style wing if anyone knows where I can source these please let me know. Pretty open with options atm but steering away from the Hakosuka style wing as it could look pretty meh. Thanks for looking.Tai
Taistorm
OK so it's about time I update this thing. There was very slow progress over the xmas/nye period but now things have got a back on track. Onc again we have had more fucking around issues with the guards but it looks like it's all going to work out. Going from the previous post we could only adapt the rear flares to suit as the fronts were too askew to fit up half decent. I was able to sort out another set of flares for a very good price from GC Stephen (hooked me up with the first set) however even though they were based off the same Group C Mazda RX3, these ones had come from a different company (fibremaster in Aus), whereas the first set were out of Japan. If you look closely at the picture (sorry shit picture) you will see that the dont have the little lip at the bottom, they are also of much poorer quality and are a bit more warped. When we first tried to match them up to the car we were thinking about getting rid of them and getting a full custom set moulded up by a local fibreglass champ but after umming and ahhing and some more stuffing around we were able to trim them back and get them mounted. As they are slightly smaller in profile they have been fitted to the front and the originals have been changed to the rear.
Taistorm
As you can see there is still a bit of trimming required and the section on the rear doors that needs to be split. We are going to add a bit off the fibreglass on the ends to cap them off and also fix some steel to brace the up for a bit more strength and also to avoid flexing with heat and wind and what not. You will probably notice the the bottom of the front passengers guard has been trimmed and rolled inwards to help with full lock clearance. Wasnt the initial look I was going for but it is growing on me, makes it more racecar spec haha.
Taistorm
Here are the front sections that will need to be notched for inner wheel clearance. And yes, it will be getting more low. I will be getting 20-30mm lowering blocks for the rear, with the fronts the cusco coilovers are already lowered to the max, sitting on bump stops so were going to change the inserts and maybe ply around with different spring rates once it is all assembled. Taistorm
I've also picked up these sweet retro racing seats. Luckily they happened to pop up on Gumtree (Aussie Trademe) just 10mins away from where I live. Paid an arm and a leg for them but still much cheaper than getting something similar out of Japan or America. They're a similar style to the optioned Hakosuka Skyline/Datsun 240z seats. They are a very small frame so once again I only just squeeze into them - means I cant get fat and fat cunts wont be able to ride shot gun so no biggy. They also came with one headrest so will need to get another made up as I doubt i'd be able to hunt one down online.Have also hunted down a replacement rear seat as my original was stolen. They will be getting retrimmed at some stage to match the fronts .
Taistorm
Stephen the GC has also kindly enough given me (yes, free) a set of Aussie spec r100 taillights. They are in need of restoration though and i'm in no rush to get these so wont be doing anything to the for a while yet but going to eventually bead blast then and may even get the rings straightened out and rechromed (will probably just paint/powder coat them black as chroming is so fucking expensive). Will also try hunt down some Jap spec lenses.Oh yeah, here's a pic of the front end mocked up again (with the old grille though). With the new flares fitted they fowl with the front lip, looks like we will be trimming the front of the flares slightly, may even notch them to make fit up all gravy (shit picture sorry).Talk shit get hit here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44085-tai-scamps-mazda-1300/page-2. Tell me what I'm doing wrong.Chur,Tai
Taistorm
Hey everyone, Long time no update. Not much has happened with the 1300 for a while. Was out of work for a bit and had other shit to sort out but now we're all back on track. More fabrication work has been carried out on it, mainly some more work on the engine bay in preparation for paint and some other bits and pieces that i'll update you guys on shortly. I've also picked up some mint Japanese spec R100 lenses which will get sussed and fitted down the track. Last night I sold those Datsun style seats, I realised that they really are too small and will be uncomfortable as fuck I drive the vehicle for more than 30mins so decided to part ways. Got back what I had paid for them though so that worked out well, they will now find their way into a 240z. Now i'm on the look out for some older Recaro LX/LR seats ("fish net" style), strayans want drug money for them so instead i'm looking to source some out of NZ, if anyone has some up for grabs please let me know and how much you're after! Don't have to be mint as I will be re trimming them to the same style as the Datsun seats. Also my mrs has been too good to me and sussed me a genuine Nardi Classic steering wheel for my birthday. Just need to sort out a boss kit then can fit it all up. Should look the part I reckon!! Cheers Tai
Taistorm
Went and checked up on the progress on the old Mazda. Here's how it's currently sitting.. More fab work has been carried out in the engine bay and front inner wheel wells for clearance and to tidy up the bay in prep for paint. The chassis rails have been capped off and the firewall/trans tunnel has been smoothed out. More plates will be welded in across the top side sections to tidy things up and further reinforce it.
Taistorm
Hoping to have it in primer or potentially painted by next weekend (fingers crossed), then we're onto assembly! Here's a picture of the wheels for good measure. Tai.
Taistorm
Scratch the above with the inner guard work. GC Alan of Motorelite just sent some snaps as he's changed the guard work. Looks a lot better with new setup and more room for the pedal assembly (running the original clutch and brake pedals but and fd accelerator pedal) but still allows wheel clearance. Here's some pics of each side...
Taistorm
More fab work... Top engine bay channels/rails(?) have been plated up to delete the factory 'creases' and reinforce it further. Chassis rail gusset had been capped off and bay and underside from the rear of the transmission forward has been stripped. Will be in primer/filler primer tomorrow hopefully
Taistorm
Some pics of the under carriage... Probably going to just strip back the whole under carriage, treat and underseal then paint the original red. Luckily tax return is due here in Aus so will cash out on the Mazda. Cheers, Tai
Taistorm
More progress on the 1300... It's now sitting in etch primer and awaiting seam sealer, filler primer and then top coats. Sorry about spamming up with boring pics but everyone loves pics haha.

Taistorm
Here's a notch taken out of the chassis rail/crossmember to assist with exhaust clearance. And a small amount of rust at the back of the r/h sill/inner rear wheel arch. And another small amount of rust in the spare wheel well. Picture of the stripped back under carriage. We will be plating up the rust, etch priming, seam seal, primer, underseal and throw on some satin black to tidy things up. Hopefully will have it all done by next weekend but will see how things go.
