Luckily its still got the ID tag but hasn't come up trumps.

It's 1st gear that's different. It's to help take off with 3.54 diff escorts.

You don't want to sell box do you? :)

Not this one sorry, will need all the help to push my heavy van around! If you are keen i could ask a mate of mine. Hes getting rid of a lot of escort gear at the moment.

I've lined up a type 9 5spd for the van but I won't be getting that until the current owner sorts out his new gearbox. It's currently in an escort and has had the shifter moved to line up with the original shifter hole in the tunnel. I know it requires a bit of massaging around the bell housing area to make it fit, but I don't know where exactly. Does someone have a spare 5spd or or even the bell housing to borrow so I can make the adjustments before I spray colour. Or even if it's just a few photos with the areas that need touching. Cheers

Vans have the big "auto" spec tunnel from factory, from memory you should be able to get a T9 in there without massaging.

Ha I new about the auto tunnels but didn't realize the Vans had them. Cheers for that. Good to know.

I still had to knock mine out a bit though, only a little bit. And the shifter is further back so you need to move the shifter hole back and modify the brace underneath

Was it just around the bell housing area you had to knock? Yeah the 5spd I'm getting is currently running in an escort and has had the shifter moved forward to use the original shifter hole.

1/3 back from the bellhousing flange left side from memory. It was only a few love taps with a solid rubber mallet, didn't even damage the paint. My engine mounts are very soft though and it touched when they flexed.

Love the colour! Looks mint. Great idea re the rear seat. I'd love a van ethier escort or anglia but wondered how I'd fit the kids in it.

Thanks man. I think it's the biggest decision when working on a car. I did um and ah for ages and had a few spray outs. A little concerned there may be a bit too much orange with the lack of trim but we'll see when it rolls out. The back seat has no seat belts (pre 77) and no side windows so it's not a great place to be, but atleast the option to have a 3rd or 4th person is a bonus. Think I'll stick with the original brown vinyl color to keep it period.

Knock the nut off and install a rivnut? Easier than chopping up the skin.

e.g ToolShed Rivet Nut Set M3-M8 (thetoolshed.co.nz)

Looks the goods and the bonnet hook would hide it. Trouble is the tap was halfway through the nut when it let go so I haven't been able to separate the tap from the nut. Might be able to make something to get behind and lock it in place/thin bent spanner.

Can you drill a hole or two on either side of the tap, then tack the nut back in from the front side. Like how you do 'spot' welds with a mig.

... the tap is holding the nut in the right place, then when it's tacked, you will be able to remove the tap/finish cleaning the thread.
