srb
Hi there,My mk2 Escort failed its WOF, due to "too much play in steering" referring to tie rod ends and sway bar bushes. So I got those replaced, and took it back it still failed, this time the guy said there was still too much play on the "inner left tie rod", specifically the joint which is covered by the rubber boot... so I am assuming I'll need to replace the tie rod itself...Can anyone recommend the best place to source one of these. For a 1980 Mk2 4 door 1.3LThanks in advance
peteretep
I know palmside and suspension tech do new quick racks with new bushes etc, so could try them. Or possibly you could try repco etc
punkoutnz
I just had that in mine so I pulled it apart and regreased it. It's a bit of a job cos you've gotta pull the whole rack out, drill out the locking pin and strip down the tie rod. Mine sorted itself out by just regreasing it but if the bushes are too worn palmside do replacements. The haynes manual tells you how to do the whole procedure and it's not all that difficult, just a bit time consuming.
shaneo
I have an old rack that has the other side that failed a wof if you want something to play around with. But a new quick rack is $340 and is brand new no need to fix for a long time after that.
Rookie
Except that won't fix his problem, escort inner tie rods are dumb and spring loaded, I just jammed a washer in mine and cranked it back up.

srb
Hi guys, thanks for the replys. When I first took it into a garage they tried the regreasing it option and said they'd improved the play, but it still didn't surfice for the WOF. Thanks Rookie looks like that's what I'll order if I can't find anything over here
sholdowa
Like I said over on TS. Get a pipe wrench and tighten the thing up until there's no play. That'll do to get through the WOF.
QCADTA
this is a common problem for old escorts, your rack and pinion internal bushing will be flogged out. I replaced mine following the haynes manual, piece of piss if your slightly mechanically minded, whiteline make them. http://www.whiteline.com.au/product_detail4.php?part_number=W11113
