Boxed in the ugly steel framework and finished the ceilings. This really made the place feel more like a house and less like a shed... Few more little bits to add, trims around the chimney. Really looking forward to selecting paint colours and getting some colour in there. So we've now moved out of the little cabin and into the workshop mezz. The cabin was getting a bit chilly, the bed a bit tiny now that the cat has decided he wants extra warmth and snuggles in between the pillows. Plus its getting boring walking from the shed after watching a movie, late at night, in the cold or rain, to a cold cabin. So we have continued on at full steam building the frame work and a bedroom. First thing was to suss out the position of the doorway frame before we started the main framework. We rummaged around in one of the woodsheds outside where we had stashed a few old doors. Picked out this one here... We'd bought this and another door for $20 together. Bloody bargain because this door is brand new, never having had any glass fitted nor any door locks or handles. Solid cedar, made in NZ. Would have been an expensive door back in the day... I scribbled some pencil lines on the floor... thus working out where the door would work best because it was going to have three positions it could be left in. Then we started frame work... insulation... Then plywood lining. Now that there was framing in the way we had to get the plywood upstairs another way. We couldn't use the stairway. I knew this was going to be an issue, along with future furniture, fridges, ovens, pianos etc. I allowed for it like this... Sorted I didn't take any pics of the plywood going up onto the walls but you can probably use your imagination. I had an idea on how to frame up and hide the steel framework in the bedroom and also set the drawers in under the kitchen benches so that way we had maximum amount of bedroom space around the bed. Its not a large bedroom but big enough to sleep in! Pretty nice to finally have a bedroom you can stand up in. Opulence for a couple who have been living in vans/housetrucks/cabins for the last 20 years. Bedroom aint finished yet but works. Rimu trims to add, wardrobe to build and some bedside shelves/cabinets. But Kevin loves it and its his go to place to feel all snug. It has a cat door the leads from the kitchen into here, past his doorway. A bit of wiring went in to suit various lights, sockets and we had to work out a suitable doorway point for our boss, sir Kevin fluffcat. He likes his new cat door with a plank he has to walk across from the bank outside.. With a cat hole sorted we brought in one of the two stainless benches we had stashed away outside. One bought cheap for $40 and the other gifted to us by a customer. Sensible choice stainless bench and sink. No pissing about. They just work forever. I cut the splashback down removing the bit with two old wall mounted tap holes and then cut a new hole to suit a shiny new mixer tap... The kitchen is almost finished but for drawers and cupboards which we will custom make ourselves to suit. I'll snap some pics of it tomorrow. Damn its nice to make a cup of coffee/cook without going downstairs or up to the cabin. Not long from finishing this project and I can actually hook back into that flat six sitting on the bench under a sheet Whoop. Oh and also I suppose I could do some more actual paid work, which there is quite a long list of jobs from patient customers up on the whiteboard yay. Shed was well utilised over the last two days. There's a Triumph 2500 wagon that's been with us for over 14 months due to covid lockdown among other things stopping the new owner from collecting it. On Thursday four likely lads flew down from Auckland and after two days of solid tinkering, carb fettling, mild levels of bodging and number 8 wire thinking they got the old girl on the road and took off today to drive back to Auckland. Word of warning, the mixer looks suspiciously similar to the budget friendly version we purchased during our reno which I just replaced this week due to a crack in the cold water hose. The hoses looked fine and no different to the ones we've had in the past from Methvan branded taps we've fitted in jobs. Popular Post yoeddynz Posted May 16, 2021 Author Popular Post Share Posted May 16, 2021 Okey dokey, because its a bit rainy and glum outside we are chilling out inside and enjoying just lazying back in the comfy sofas and cosiness of our new pad. I have just taken some pics of the kitchen (some of which show off my superb culinary skills at the fine art of perfecting toast) Here is pretty much the most essential culinary toasting device... and a most essential coffee thing... The serving hatch (is that the correct name?) needed a nice surround. Remember that lovely bit of acacia timber we found in our pile of rimu? Well it was perfect for the job and looks sweet... Still loads to do but its now a nice usable kitchen and way bigger than any van/truck kitchen we've had before. We'll make a roll out pantry to fit beside the fridge, yet to be bought. Cupboards and drawers are the next thing to build though. The doorway, kitchen closed off... Whole lot opened up.. Looking down the hallway, bedroom door on the left... Super happy with the door, another bargain from a recycling centre. This one I have mounted on rollers and it opens into a hollow wall... I have ensured that there was enough storage space above the bedroom roof to fit a Lancia Stratos windscreen for my planned future dream LMP styled sportscar build. I can get a screen now and store it up there. This I see is a sort of way to commit myself to actually building said car (but a fair way in time before I can start that) Currently there is a Bedford TK headlining stashed up there - not really quite as exciting as a Stratos screen.... We also need to build a toilet setup in the space here. Going to post up some before and after shots soon because its looking neat as compared to 8 years ago. This spring and summer have been perfect for plant growth on the block and the bush is really coming away well. We've just started the process of a new shed build. Tore down the old tin shed which we'd built and parked next to the housetruck when at the campground in Nelson, which then got carted out in two halves to the bushblock all those 7/8 years ago. New shed will be about 5.5m by 5m and be mainly to house the Imp and most of our pushbikes plus anything else currently in the workshop that's not for engineering/work related. It'll be nice to have a safe warm place for the Imp and not have to ever leave it outside in the harsh sun or the wet (because when it rains here its usually pretty good decent rain - and because the Imp is British that rain eventually seems to find its way in somehow) We want to style this shed like an old country workshop. Iron sides and roof, timber front, big timber doors. We've got quite a bit of materials already so its not going to be a big spend job. Just priced up concrete which delivered out to here from Motueka will cost about $240 for 1.5m3 of the stronger 25mpa stuff - still seems pretty cheap? I'll get some more pics soon but this was last week just as we started tearing it down. I think I had posted up a pic of the concrete pad on the shed thread a short while back. We have been building it as quick as we could in between other property jobs/customers work. Luckily its been a 6 week or more run of perfect clear sky days up until two days ago when the skies opened up and so far it all seems dry and very cosy. Pics explain the build better. It has been built on a super tight budget. We had hoped to keep the whole build under $5000 but its going to be just shy of $6000 inc the ply inside and benches etc. The concrete came in at $1100 plus paying a friend $300 to do the pour and that magical floaty finishing bit with the upside down helicopter thing. I was going to hire one and have a go at doing the whole job myself but I knew I'd fuck something up. Its probably never a thing I'll need to do again so I was happy to sit back, drink some beers and watch someone else use their experience to not screw up a job. We bought new iron and clearlight for the roof- again, something not to piss about with. The rest of the build used new surplus timber we were given by a builder friend and old iron we had salvaged from various places over the last few years. The window was gifted by @Willdat? and most of the interior ply came from the shed we pulled down. Pics.. I ordered extra concrete because no one wants to run out midway through a pour. So I made a load of forms and we ended up with heaps of paving slabs which will get used for a glass house build later on... Framework... Roof. Went for heaps of overhang on each side because why not. The old shed roof was perfect for the back wall and there was just enough of it. Already complete with patina.. We are doing what we can to try and build a garage that looks somewhat like its been there for decades. Its going to have a sign written facade above the front along with a small iron verandah. This old iron siding was perfect for the look. The alloy window is going to be painted to try best to hide the fact its alloy. Got a load of Douglas Fir timber from a friend around the corner who I had done some welding work on his van.. Ship lapped which had the added bonus of creating a load of kindling... Made some old style bi-fold doors... Had a solid old, but brand new, and very stained wooden door we had bought years ago for $20. Finally we have something to use it on. It needed gluing back together.. Altogether now.. Imp for scale... We'd bought new gauged and treated rafters because made sense. But they are pink. So Hannah painted them white for that old garage look... We went to the local tip and fished through the old paint deposit bin. Some contractors had just dropped off a whole load of paint, some brand new. Jackpot!!!... Let there be colours! Hannah sorted through them all.. Then painted walls... We made some benches etc yesterday and finished them off this morning while the rain poured down outside. Its really feeling like a good proper useful garage now... Pic of benches getting oiled... That's where its up to now. We've got some treated plywood for the signboards. The treated uprights are in place ready to fit them to. Not yet fixed on names or style but I'll just make something up as I go along. I have some funny sign ideas I might try out. Quite keen to try and make the paint and sign writing look really old and sun damaged, faded like. Keen on any suggestions on how best to do this - that washed out look. Ha- the sun here will no doubt blast the paint anyway. The front timber siding and doors will hopefully go silver in short time and look older too. I'm now super looking forward to moving all the accumulated useful stuff junk that has been taking up space in the workshop, along with many bicycles in the garage and hopefully getting rid of some stuff too. We will make a planter box for under that window out of some old hardwood telephone pole sections that were left on the land when we bought it. Would be a good place for suculants etc because all day sun but sheltered from any frosts. Oh and here's a short video I made with a Go pro I had bought cheap a while back. First time I have ever used one. I thought to take a vid of the quad bike going up the main track to the ridgetop for a beer in the sunset up there. Took a while to decide what to write and longer to actually take some time off other jobs and paint the things. Sketched out the main centre board first which hannah then painted - like a big colouring in book I downloaded various images of car badges and the sketched them out for hannah to paint over. They look good but a bit 'new' so hopefully they'll fade soon enough and start looking old. We'd sort of finished the signs a couple of weeks ago but finally got around to putting them up on Friday. They still need the capping fitting. I snapped some pics that evening. I'm sure I've burnt some fat and bulked out a bit. Started off digging in here.. Sun was intense but was getting into it. I changed my outfit.. We had stashed away a pile of old power pole hardwood cross bars that were left on the land when we bought it. For the last 8 years they've been hiding behind the water tank waiting for a use. Moved them out and propped them up for a wall. Tried it out for a morning coffee.. Then sunk some treated poles into the ground - again - left on the land. The same stash has been used for the boat shed and all four wood sheds scattered about the property. Bought some timber and along with some douglas fir given to us we started a framework for the deck. Removed all the old screws from some old decking we had down next to the housetruck when it was parked up.. Bought new decking for the longer runs and then it was time to get baked in the sun and use roughly 600 screws. Kevin watched but did not offer a paw to help.. Was the longest day yesterday - nice to day to get the deck down. Next step will be steps. Oh and some handrails to suit. 44 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
