ajg193
I wish I understood the meaning of that... I'm guessing you mean lower it?
EURON8
I believe wee simon was suggesting a rotary and some lowering. Your plans to not lower it and not change the wheels is different. I don't like it ( good thing it's not my car aye) haha. I suppose a tidy original starlet is better than a Matt black cut springs de bumpered west auckland spec one. ajg193
I just don't see the point in lowering cars. It is great how it is, just as high as my dad's ute. A little rolly around corners though.
Snoozin
I have/had King springs in mine, and it didn't really lower it but it stiffened it up and handling improved if that's a way you'd like to go.
ajg193
Could do. Not sure whether it would be safe though. The rolliness is a good indicator that I am going too fast around the corner already, if I stiffen it up I will probably just end up sliding all over the place. kpr
So many kp's on here now! while i also disagree with the lack of lowering. good to see you tiding it up rather than wrecking it. stock kp suspension is unsafe haha! it will be way way better with some firmer springs and decent shocks. even without lowering it. with the right suspension mods they handle awesome.
Sparkle
Lowering would be nice? ....hur hur hur. Have a similar one much the same as yours. Cool little cars! Totally understand keeping it fairly original.
Beaver
Could be a number of things mate, check the timing and the ignition (points gap or dwell, condition of spark plugs etc)
ajg193
I put brand new spark plugs in about a month ago, old ones were still mint though. I converted it to an electronic distributor at the same time, timing was set to 8* when that was done. EDIT1: It had the same idle before I put the electronic distributor in. EDIT2: I also checked all of the high tension leads when I did the spark plugs, all were well within tolerance.
lownslow
I would be checking for air leaks. blown manifold gaskets are common on k series. spray some engine start/brake clean around manifold and see if idle speed changes. (some people prefer to use water, I dont)
ajg193
Checked that, no change with that CRC Engine Start stuff. Checked the spark plugs, they are clean.
ajg193
Seeing as you guys are a bunch of experts [hopefully] on the topic, maybe you can help me out with my gearbox noises. When it is in neutral and my foot is OFF the clutch it makes a fairly loud whirring sound, kind of like a skateboard rolling along. The sound goes away as soon as the clutch is pushed in, this indicates that it is NOT the release bearing causing the sound. What component is likely causing this sound and is this sound safe? The gearbox has always been making the sound during my ownership and I have changed the gear fluid. Thanks
Rookie
Input bearing. I assume it makes the same noise when you are driving too.
ajg193
Can't hear it while I am driving, probably just because more engine noise and whatnot. Do you reckon it will be safe to keep driving it as is for another year until I get back up North? It isn't leaking any oil. Otherwise I could possibly make a mission of it and rip it out this weekend and fix it before I leave down south on the 12th.
ajg193
Also, for removing the input bearing on a K50 do I need to pull the whole box apart or does it just unbolt from the front of the box? The diagram in the manual makes it look like it can just be unbolted and pulled (somehow).
Rookie
It will probably be sweet, but that is just an internet diagnosis hahaha
ajg193
I pulled the box today, that front bearing is definitely a bit noisy and sloppy. I might try and get my brother's old K50 from his KE70 and swap the tailhousing over. Just need to wait on the person that has it laying around. ajg193
Ended up just stripping the box, putting new bearings in on monday.
