Banga
Picked this old girl up back in August, thought it was about time I posted it up here. Back in high school my family had a 1300 Mk2 that I learnt to drive in which led me to buy my own a 67 (supposedly, but Im pretty sure it was a series two 1300 originally with the plates and tags switched) Mk2 for my first car, warmed 1500 with a anglia floor change box, it went pretty well till it ran a bearing right before I went off to uni. Being a poor student for the next 4 years and moving to a different city I decided it was best to flick it on as I wouldn't be able to fix it or afford to fun it. During my first year at uni my folks picked up a rusty old GT and stripped it for parts with the plan to swap them onto their little 1300, but before that happened my step dad got himself a 56 F100 and decided to flick off the cortina -but kept a bunch of the GT parts. A dozen or so years down the track and I was in slightly better financial position, owned my own house with big garage and an understanding partner - it seemed like a good time to hunt down another old cortina. There seemed to be a few floating round but most seemed to have suspect recent paint jobs, were somewhat butchered or were $8-$10k. Eventually I came across this old girl down in Blenheim, sure it looked rough with dents in almost every panel but at least I knew what I was getting into. Exchanged a few emails with the guy and flew down south the next weekend to pick it up. She's an early 67 with a 1500, column change with benches. The glovebox was stuffed full of receipts, over $4k of engine work in early 2013, its bored out a little now with a fast road cam, electronic ignition, electric fuel pump, extractors, alternator so it gets along alright and touch wood has been reliable to date. She has had a bit of rust cut out from the usual places and replaced with new steel- hence the different shades of green going on. Parted with the Ernies and headed off to catch the ferry in Picton, started to rain while waiting in line and quickly became obvious that neither the front or rear screens were water tight. Clutch was a bit hit or miss so gave the master cylinder a birthday and that seemed to sort that out. Banga
Went up to the olds place and picked up the majority of the Cortina stuff, just a 1600 and gearbox left up there now. Came home with my mini lives (tires didn't seem to bad after sitting round for 10+ years), a few GT cortina parts, bucket seats, centre console, rear drum brakes, dashboard, spare grille, headlight surrounds, taillight surrounds and a few boxes of little bits and pieces. Mini lites still held air so threw them on Pulled the carpet out to check there wasn't any nastiness happening underneath given that she wasn't overly water tight. Pretty happy to find only a little bit of surface rust. Wire brushed that back and gave it a coat of paint before laying down some dynamat. All new seals, weatherstrips, headlining, lowering blocks, gas pedal, glovebox clip, diff seal, GT steering coloumn surround.
Banga
The car came with a 3.54 diff head as part of the deal, it looked to be in good nick so thought I better put it in. Once I got it in the housing it just didn't feel "right", thought I better have someone who knew what the were doing have a look at it. Borgweiser kindly offered to have a look. Turns out it was good idea to have someone look at it Wouldn't have lasted long if I decided she'll be right.
Banga
Over the past couple of months I've just been plodding away, fitted the 9" GT drum brakes and new brake cylinders, fitted the 3.54 diff head, slapped in the lowering blocks , a new bigger steering wheel. Sent my dashboard away to get recovered, stoked with how it turned out. Before After
Banga
This is how she's looking today, got some new wheels during December with a better offset to fill out the guards 15 x 7 with 0 offset, look pretty good I reckon. Might need to lower the front another inch. She's going in for panel work an paint at the end of January, decided to respray in the original colour, which I think is Vista green based on the code on the VIN plate- 79W BU2. Over the christmas break I did some under sealing, pulled out the gas tank as it had a bit of surface rust. Knocked some dents out of some spare headlight surrounds and grill, spent a few hours filing, sanding and painting. Should look pretty good with the mint bonnet chrome I've picked up. Initially the plan was to pull out the front bench and put the GT buckets and a floor change gearbox in it, thinking I might keep the bench now though. Have fresh carpet to go in so will have to make a decision before then.
Banga
Been tearing her apart for the past week or so for paint. Didn't find any surprise rust so rally happy about that. My stepdad was kind enough to cruise down and take her away to the painters up in Levin for me. Away she goes.
Banga
Been a while since I updated this, haven't been totally slack while its been away getting painted. Just been tinkering away stripping paint and polishing bits and pieces. Spencers Citric Acid rust striping plan works a treat. The major thing that I managed to get done was recovering my benches, sent my old covers away to Autosport upholstery in AK and he whipped up some nice new covers in almost the same colour as the originals. A few hours and a few dozen hog rings and this was the result, first time trying to do any upholstery and pretty stoked. Still have to get some heat on them to get the last of the wrinkles out. Had the B pillar sections re done as well, all looks pretty sweet
Popular Post Banga
Somehow managed to delete all the photos... reloaded at a slightly better size now I think. Anyways it came back this weekend, looks awesome I reckon. not a dent to be seen which makes quite the change from when it left- looked like some one had jumped up and down on the roof. Got stuck in last night putting door seals on and then thought we should see how it looked with the wheels on followed by the lights and the grill. Only slight mishap was breaking the boot locking mechanism while trying to get the lock in, looks like it's been going for awhile though. Today hasn't been quite so successful, tidied up some of the wiring in the engine bay- removed the speaker wire being used to power the electric fuel pump. Changed the loom over to the GT one to run the 4 extra gauges in the middle of the day. Took my time and replaced a few dodgy looking wires but nothing major. Battery is flat so jump started it and everything was working mint, all the dash lights and gauges. Please with myself I went to lunch. Came back from lunch and it's dead - absolutely dead. Even connecting it up with jumper leads doesn't do a thing. I've checked the earths and looked for any melted wires but couldn't find anything. I've pulled the loom out to double check everything and will charge overnight. Any ideas appreciated! So moved on to putting door handles on and fish oiled the inside of all the doors. Popular Post Banga
Still progressing do a few hours each night during the week and a as much as I can on the weekends. Sorted the no power problem from last weekend, didn't have the Amp gauge connected when meant no power to the loom or ignition... I've got all the side windows and doors back together now, the door cards are dark green and look pretty good with the lighter green paint. I was putting the dash back together and thought I would wipe the 40 year old dust off the top of the glove box, which revealed a 40 year old note/service record- pretty sweet All the windows back in. All the rear lights and bumper back on, just need to grab the boot lock off Karl /-i500GT- Got my GT dash back in, all the gauges work too which I'm pretty stoked about Had it running this morning to check the mechanical oil pressure gauge didn't leak before I put the dash back in. Next job is to get the tacho wired up, I've only got the dash portion of the GT loom so the engine bay loom is missing a few wires. I had a go this afternoon using some directions off another forum- wasn't a great success as now I don't have any spark... definitely not cut out to be an auto sparky!
Popular Post Banga
A bit slack on the updates over the last couple of weeks but plenty has been happening. So I figured out that I fried the electronic ignition module when I tried to wire up the rev counter.... not ideal. Got a new module and had spark again. A little more research and it looks like I can't use the rev counter with electronic ignition set up as its the wrong type , RVI when I need a RVC. There are a few conversion kits out available to convert to a RVC so that will happen at some stage in the future. Pretty much all back together now, had to pull the look out again when the wire for interior courtesy light sorted out and melted through the loom while we were putting the headlining in, melted a hole in my nice new headlining too but luckily that is covered by the rear view mirror. Took it for a WOF last week, just need a few new bulbs as the ones in it were a bit dull, so pretty stoked with that. Needs a bit of tune, it's running a bit rich at the moment so will get that sorted at some stage. Recovered seats and new carpet Already had holes in the parcel shelf so figured I'd put some sounds in. Took it for a drive up to my folks place in Levin on Sunday, no issues over the couple of hundred kms which is always good. Hopefully will get along to one of the monthly meets at soon, heading away to the states next weekend so looking like Julys will be the earliest.
Banga
Long time no update, just been driving it up until the xmas break really. Flew through another WOF at the end of November, had thrown new front pads on along with a bleed and adjustment of the rear drums as the brakes weren't overly flash- seems to have done the trick. The downdraft had been playing up a bit recently, not wanting to start or idle too well and didn't get much better even after throwing a kit on it. I've had a single sidedraft manifold for a while so figured rather than throwing any more cash at old carb I would just look for sidedraft instead. Old 32 DFM Pick up a Dellorto dhla 40 in the end that had come off a 1600 crossflow and supposedly recently rebuilt- figured that would be a good starting point for my 1580 (ish) pre-crossflow. Tried to get it to work with the original linkage set up but after a few nights tinkering away in the garage admitted defeat and decided to grab a Mangoletsi double cable set up. Jimmied up a cable bracket for the accelerator out of an old mtb disk brake adaptor and I was away laughing. Until I took it for a drive and it wouldn't go up hills, was draining the bowl. After a bit of trial and error and a help post in the tech section BigMatt4 suggested moving the electric fuel pump closer to the tank which cured the issue and now I was getting too much fuel. My fuel pressure regulator finally turned up and cured that problem. Have down a fair bit of sorting around over the xmas break. The sidedraft definitely seems a lot torque-ier than the old downdraft as well as starting and idling a lot better. Fitted new rear shocks today as the drivers side was spewing oil and not doing too much in the way of dampening.

Popular Post Banga
Crikey! 6 years between updates and all my previous photos are bung! Will have to see if I can update them I guess. The mk2 was on the road for the majority of that time and generally just ticked along without too much in the way of changes/updates. We left Wellington and headed up to Rotorua and I spent a bit of time working across in Melbourne but COVID put an end to that regular commute so back to a full time NZ job again now. One thing I did manage to get my hands on during that period was a set of Simmons V4s in an offset to suit a Cortina, I’ve pined for a set of these since I was a teenager with a Mk2 - not cheap but don’t come up too often either! This was after a quick polish up and with 20 year old rock hard tyres that didn’t hold air. They are 7” front and 8” inch. Managed to get some centre caps and threw them on. Already have a set of wheels with dark grey centre’s so… Now have all new hardware and new inner rear barrels to make them 7” all round. I haven’t yet got them on the car for reasons that will become apparent shortly.
Popular Post Banga
Mostly picture less update So I think I had a kind of a mid life crisis at the beginning of the year and suddenly had a hankering for something a bit quicker- a B7 Audi RS4 wagon was top of the list but being a risk manager I started looking at ongoing running costs and the prices jumping about $10k in the space of a couple of months so back to the drawing board. Started to look more closely at upgrading the Cortina and giving myself a bit of an project. Im an office worker not a fabricator but I do have plenty of experience with Lego- so started looking into options that fit that niche and very quickly stumbled upon Retroford in the UK- and then promptly got carried away ordering a huge chunk of their catalogue - after being scammed trying to buy an engine in NZ they even sourced an engine and gearbox for me. I paid my money and waited and waited and waited - thanks COVID! My pallet was on the dock in Singapore for so long I was wondering if it needed a Visa. But it’s finally here in NZ and I should get it before Christmas - not quite the winter project I was planning but it’s here, well in Auckland. Will hopefully have more regular updates in the coming months (years?)
Popular Post Banga
New set up involves going away from a column change box which means I can drag out some Cortina GT seats which have been in storage for 20 odd years. They were looking pretty sorry for themselves but Ross from Autosport was able to recover them in the same vinyl he did the my bench seats with back in 2014. Pretty happy with how they came out!
Popular Post Banga
Successful trip to Auckland today- mocked up for now but plenty of cleaning/painting to do!
Popular Post Banga
Further progress. Need to work out a new solution now. Standard master cylinders are a no go with ITBs especially if I want to run any kind of air filter.
Popular Post Banga
Slowly chipping away at this- hopefully some more free hours coming up shortly. Didn’t have to cut to much out of the tunnel to get the MX5 gearbox to fit, just some massaging and patching to tidy up with now. Drive shaft and exhaust fitted- exhaust tucks up nice and close to the floor. have modified the handbrake cable routing a little to make it all fit and tacked up the first drive shaft hoop. I think I have found a pedal box solution which is essentially a modified MK2 set which retains the original box/mounting for classic racing racing requirements. Just waiting to hear back on whether the brake pedal is one piece to meet cert requirements- even if it isn’t I’ll probably still go with it and have a new pedal made down here.
Popular Post Banga
A good few days progress, hard work in a black shed with 29 degree days. Tunnel is all closed up again, biggest welding job I’ve done so plenty to learn. Finished off the two driveshaft hoops as well, front one was straight forward but the rear one needed a little more thought/work. Fitted crush tubes for the new gearbox mount. Have done more cleaning on the engine and painted the block too. Back to work tomorrow so progress will slow down again.
