Popular Post cletus
So i managed to purchase this from a mate, he got it from an old lady who had it stored since 1985 in her garage. has a siezed 318, all original paint which has a lot of surface rust. plans at this point, pull the motor out of this, panel and paint, swap turbo 318 out of my sedan into it, rebuild the engine out of this and insert into more family friendly version of the white VG. the only rusty holey parts in this are the spare wheel hole (will make a new flat boot floor for a fuel cell) and near the rear inner guard ( mini tubs will fix that) will probably take a while but am excited to have a 2 door one of these discuss= //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/41371-clintus-valiant-hardtop/?hl=cletus#entry1221535
Popular Post cletus
went and retrieved it today, it will be in storage at my boss's place for a while. plan= pinch the stock carb/manifold/exhaust off the coupe and fit to the ute, sell ute. rebuild the 318 out of the coupe, fit carb/manifold/headers off ute to 318, put in my white VG. do panel, paint, half cage, tubs, etc and put turbo motor in coupe, do skids.
cletus
yoink! still unsure why it siezed, apparently it was a runner when it was parked but nobody can remember why it was parked. the oil was pretty thin when i drained it and there was lots of it, possibly the fuel pump was leaking fuel into the engine.
Popular Post cletus
So now we have a house with a bigger garage, ive got this at home. Stripped the interior out today as it was FULL of rat poos, old rubbish from the 80s, pictures of jeebus, pencils and 2c coins, and a rug with a tiger on it. floor looked good from underneath, and even better on top, its like a new one, sweet!
cletus
pulled some more stuff off. pretty good so far, theres a bit of rot at the front of the sill (crap gets behind the guard liner thing and sits in there) both guards will need work, theres some rust in the rh one, ive still got to get the lh one off but it has had a mangling and subsequent pooing to fix it, and it has lost its shape havnt decided 100% but i have had ideas about a VE front on it. Makes it look similar to a dart, not that i want a dart replica, i just like the shape of VEs.
Popular Post cletus
just because id rather be getting dirt in my eyes and skinning knuckles rather than watch cricket. actually wasnt much of a battle at all, there was only 2 bolts that didnt want to come out
Popular Post cletus
more removal of the things. will get a glass guy to remove the windows i think. probably cheaper to do that than break them. no big rusty surprises hiding which was good i knew this bit was lurking not much more to come out of it. will probably make some sort of frame so i can flip it on its side or upside down to do the underneath stuff. also have to decide how to tackle the body- i might get it properly blasted and primed. im going to fix the rusty bits myself but i will give it to a panelsmasher to get it straight and paint it. also been looking at other mods im going to do engine wise- current plan includes a new exhaust, might use some of these or similar, they are for a dodge truck. turned around and the collector shortened and re angled, should be able to make the pre turbo part of the exhaust shorter, and flow & sound better
Popular Post cletus
not much to get excited about, but- dash out hooray no surprise rust restorers dream i tell ya found this interesting. these were between the dash and body to stop rattles i assume. bits of vinyl trim, this has never been apart so this was factory, ha and check out how rough some of the work is on these things
Popular Post cletus
i done made a thing 90% done, will add some bracing and something to lock it in position once i know how much room i have around the body. it bolts on to where the bumpers bolt to the chassis. also got some box section to brace the body while im working on it
Popular Post cletus
cut some stuff out, shifter bracket, console brackets, rear parcel shelf brace and seat mounts made an arrangement of box section to hopefully keep it straight when its on the rotisserie. it bolts to the seatbelt anchorages, door hinge mount and base of the rear pillar. i might add another one that goes across between the 2
Popular Post cletus
safe as mate just dont get under it getting it up onto the rotisserie was a bit of a mission, was probably the sketchiest thing ive done in a while. jack it up as high as possible, stands under it, make extension for jack, jack up as high as it goes, attach ratchet tie downs to roof of shed and pull it up last 100mm, bolt rotisserie on, all the time ready to bolt in case it all came crashing down
Popular Post cletus
made some chassis connectors and glued them in. 75x40x4 was the nearest size to the rear bit of chassis rail i could get, made some gussets so it spans the height of the rail at the front part. my other car i put some 50x 5 round pipe in and it made a big difference in stiffness, the 2 door body obviously has no b pillar and is slightly longer so it probably needs all the help it can
Popular Post cletus
picked up most of a 9" diff for it today, I was thinking about using a 28 spline BW or possibly an 8.8 out of an explorer, but this came up for $200. Its missing a few bolts, no axles, and it is way too wide, but narrowing was going to have to be done regardless of what diff I use, can get axles for 9'' easily, same with parts for the center, can get any ratio, etc. its huugemungus and weighs a million heavys, but should be strong enough for what im doing.
Popular Post cletus
ruined it some more draw some lines cut that out move it over and put in a filler strip which i need to get and cut out the boot floor and spare wheel well which is rusty.

Popular Post cletus
underneath these bits done, have to make a couple of patches for rust in one side, and weld some bits from inside the car. later will blast underneath, epoxy prime and sealer on the joins in the tubs

Popular Post cletus
made a new crossmember at the rear to mount the springs inboard of the chassis rails Will also add a jacking point in the middle before i weld it in.
Popular Post cletus
done some more stuff. Mounting the front of the springs was a bit more of a head scratcher because there was a few different ways to do it, was thinking about another rhs crossmember like the back but would get in the way of exhaust etc, another was to put a crush tube in the rail and just bolt the spring to the rail. Ended up doing this though make 4 plates the same 2 are 5mm, need a thinner bit where it sits over a double skin, so put some new 'tooling' in the 'stone mill' and do that make a gusset and weld it all in spring on other side of rail and welded in the rear crossmember, with a jacking point thing that my jack plugs into have made the other side so just have to stick it all together. Because ive put the springs inside the rails I will fit a decent rear swaybar to stop it falling on its doorhandles when it goes around a corner. most people who shift the springs put them directly on the rail so they end up all jacked up which is obviously will probably get another leaf added to stiffen it up as well. The other plates go on the top of the floor, then i can weld something that ties the upper plates into the roll bar.
