KKtrips
Nice work man - I dig Mk3 Cortina's and the quad headlight is the best looking front of the lot. Any reason you are sticking with the slushbox and not going manual?
grimlok
Cheers dude. Slushbox is sheer laziness. Spend most of my time in stop go traffic. Just OVER heel and toeing between lights. Got a Sierra T-9 5 speed sitting in the pile if I ever decide I want to biff the manual in. I would get better fuel economy outta the overdriven 5th, and with the torque and power band of the Zetec (180 nm 1400-6400 rpm. 170bhp stock zetec head vs Cortina x-flow 100 nm and prolly around 100 horse with an untouched head) it would work a lot like a closer ratio box. But this will be my daily. And hopefully the last car I ever own. Can't really see me wanting to drive a manual when I'm 60. With almost a doubling in perceived power over a 2Ltr gobanger she's sure to get up and go if I give her a boot full. And with the injection, will still deliver 30+ MPG all day every day. Into the stealth idea. keep it looking and sounding old skool and factory-ish on the outside. But feisty enough to upset ricey jappas when they realise they have to grab another gear to keep up. The manual conversion is a little more expensive and a lot more dicking round/locating/frankenstiening to get right. Requires a 1.8 escort flywheel because the 2.0 ones are dual mass, Fly would need drilling and doweling for the Sierra clutch pack, Crank would need a spigot bearing and Thrust bearing outta a mk 1 transit to get pedal travel right. The auto is just drill the flexyplate to suit the Cortina Torque Converter, space it out 13mm between the plate and the TQ, and have a beer cus your done. Just realised I've typed a lot of crap. It's becoming apparent I love this car. And will wax lyrical with anyone that shows any interest. Couple of engineers I've spoken to about it reckon it should be a pretty kick ass conversion as long as I do it all properly. I don't think many people realise how easy swapping the east/west into the drivetrain is. I'm really surprised more of them aren't floating round in rwd escorts. eke_zetec_RWD
re mounting a type 9 to zetec. when i did all i had to do was insert a pinto spigot bearing. the zetec crank was already machined to fit this. and then use a release bearing from a cvh i think it was. i used a stock flwheel and clutch and pressure plate and everything. then i used a twincam sierra starter motor. from one of those real shit box sierras. this all works a treat and holds 220hp at the wheels no problems.
Escortn
I have insane amounts of jealousy because of that grille! have you decided how your going about your fuel setup? Sweet project

Yup. A lot of cvh bits will bolt over from what I've read. What exactly are the shitbox sierra's dude? I only ever remember wagons. With 2.0 OHC motors. Haven't really searched deep for one cus the plan is the auto. A cvh sump is also on the "Find or just make somehow" list. Still pretty keen on the lazy auto But always good to have the options there depending on part availability. Or if I break the slush box. Or if I get shitty at the slush box and rip it out in disgust. I have MANY questions about your set up. Water rail? Exhaust? cooling? Because I wanted to do something slightly different re into the mk3, and with the auto, I had to use "If that works... I SHOULD be able to use that." logic when putting the parts list together. Seems everyone does the 5 speed. Awesome. I like being different :-)What's the Zetec like as a motor? I figure it's gotta be a bit harder better faster stronger motor than a 2.0 x-flow? Where the hell did my multi quote thing go?? Sigh.......
grimlok
I have insane amounts of jealousy because of that grille! have you decided how your going about your fuel setup? Sweet project Thanks dude. HA HA! Yeah. The day I got my hands on the grill I was well pleased with myself. Always been my favourite set of lights on them too. Gonna change the lights themselves up just a tad. Got an idea. Will see how it goes. Works in my head. Re fuel set up. low pressure pump to Surge tank somewhere. factory to the motor. return to surge tank, and a return from the surge to the main. MegaSquirted. as long as it all fits. I'll make the ECU from a kit and wire it all up, tweak the map etc and get it dynoed to fix how crap I prolly am at tuning a map. Then I'll prolly tweak it some more as time goes on and I start to understand it. I'm stealing your colour coding of the motor. Alt. etc. I decided this the moment I saw your thread before I joined up. Yes I admit it. I'm a thief... I'm still doing it Cus that looks kick ass. Sweet car you have dude. Read your Cortina thread several times
Raizer
What exactly are the shitbox sierra's dude? I only ever remember wagons. With 2.0 OHC motors. The ones with the shitty I4 engine in them -That's I4 as in the engine designation, not I4 as in Inline 4 cylinder. They came as a 2L 8 valve DOHC in Sierras, then 2.0 and 2.3L 16valve in Scorpio and Galaxys think they used them up until around 2005 in the Galaxy

camo_78
looks like a fun project captain, your engine bay plans are almost identical to mine for my mk5 sport, albeit im still going to be running a pinto
dr.wylde
I've a soft spot for the Mk3 go tinas very XY coonesque shape to them, If you want to blow people in ricers at the lights then an auto is the way to go IMO

Love the XYs coons. And to me the mk3s are a baby brother to the XY, sorta, just a tad. I'm into the whole "Coke bottle" design era cars.

grimlok
Yo dude. Following your build with much interest. Love your approach and your writing style. Keep up the good work. Cheers. Cheers dude It's little things like this that keep me going on those days were "nothing goes together like it should" I see you have a mk1 esky. Very Jelly. I'd love to slam and zetec/T9 an esky wag, split the tailgate so it opens like a ute tail gate. Infact. That is the very plan after getting the Cortina done and on daily duty and I can flick off my dirty daily famila hatch to fund it.
eke_zetec_RWD
Good luck with that sump. I have a feeling it's die cast alloy rubbish. I welded one once and it just kept cracking everywhere. So I hope your one is a different type
grimlok
Good luck with that sump. I have a feeling it's die cast alloy rubbish. I welded one once and it just kept cracking everywhere. So I hope your one is a different type C3 cast into the inside of the sump. According to Turbosport forums it's exactly as you describe it. apparently the sumps with F cast into them are the better sumps to weld. I believe they are more common on the esky zetecs. Going to have a crack with "Super Alloy 5"/Dura weld/Easy weld ali brazing rods and see what happens. Failure isn't an option. I'm avoiding it, But if I have to I'll bang one outta tin. grimlok
Been hoping you'd stop in at some point dude. Seeing as your local and have been thru some of the Zetec conversion drama you'd be a great cat to sit down and have a beer or 6 with. Now he tells me . hahahaha Couldn't find the file anywhere for the Exhaust flange when I was looking. Could find inlet, and engine mounts. No Exhaust. Supreme water Jetting on Hurlstone Dr have a complete set of files from me for the conversion now, Except for the Thermostat Housing/water rail. I haven't drawn that one up yet. Keen as for a local meet of some kind. I can even host and put together a little bit of entertainment for the boys if there is enough interest and no one is a axe murderer. The Mancave got keg lines plumbed in last week. They do need a test
