Muffler Tech

For some reason i feel like some kind of under qualified doctor,  giving slightly dodgy medical advice

but anyway

I would cut it off just before  your last muffler. see how it sounds. (its going to have to come off either way) will sound a little different after straight seciton is on, but will give a pretty good idea, what it will sound like!   likely find you will need to put a straight through glass pack in its place, to make it sound decent.

and markku yes sidepipe/giving me one right now

OK, I'll do it.

I hope that 90° goes from parallel to your driveshaft to perpendicular just behind the drivers door

Needs to be passengers side for maximum doort sharing capabilities at Manfeild.

yup

depends how fire proof your packing is.

i thought it would be choice to use some pink bats, out of my parents ceiling back in the day, as ran out of chop.  did not last very long.

have you tried stainless packing? have seen it for sale at supercheap

can't say i have,  have only used chop strand because its cheap and easy to get. other than robbing the packing from a cheap muffler like niglewade above. guess packing it with the stainless then glass, like the picture on the first page should make it last longer.  might give it a go next time!

You can buy the propa packing from a lot of muffler shops, its sorta like chop strand, but much finer/fluffier/denser. My 86 came with stainless mufflers fitted in 1986, they cases were in good nick, but had no packing left, one had golf ball sized black lump of shit rolling round in it, lols.

I have found that turbo flow mufflers sound the worse, and you need atleast two resonators to get rid of the crackle. But in saying that, my first Trueno ended up with four resonators on it (no muffler), and was still loud as shit. Sounded mean tho.

i made a few mufflers for rotaries years ago, all stainless straight thru type, bought a whole lot of cheap stainless dish scrubs and sort of stretched them into donuts over the perforated core, then packed the rest with fibreglass mat. worked well and lasted way longer than all the glasspack only ones .

In my escort I have a big muffler before it goes over the diff, then a small resonator after before it exits. Water seems to have been getting trapped in the resonator and has rusted it out a bit, what would happen if I replaced it with a bit of straight pipe? Sound like shit/backpressure issues or would it be sweet? If straight pipe is fine I'll just cut it out, but if I need it I might try to patch it up as feeling pretty broke currently after getting motorbike re-vinned.

Yes you are, as pipe dia increases there is a drop in friction due to lower velocities and changes in relative roughness of the pipe etc. It comes down to being more expensive for larger dia pipe but mainly you just cant fit a 6" exhaust under a car.

You really need to ask questions rather than writing "facts" like the above dribble as this is how misinformation gets spread on the all mighty internet.

EDIT: we are talking down the line here, I know nothing about megaphone exhausts/tuning for the correct frequency at the headers/collector but after that you just want to get it out.
