Popular Post sluggy
Because I am marginally retarded, I bought another car I cant fit in Its all road legal/certified/homologated/running - bought it as a project for the kids (14 and 17) and because the 80s bring back awesome memories for me (apart from the hairdressers I went out with). Long term plan 1. Wrap it in a 60s can am style 2. See if I can fit by doing extra yoga, and moving seat/installing beer crate 3. Gearbox, beef up a bit/LSD (skid value) 4. Engine - 1915ccs, twin IDA's (can am style trumpets through the deck), Hi lift and duration cam (FK89), and about 12:1 compression. 5. Do skids.

Bonus is had a good time huffing gas fumes all arvo, sweet deal.
Popular Post sluggy
Engine Porn post... A few issues found - "New Moldex Crank" .010" under on the mains, so its off to be crack tested. Heads are way over sprung, approx .770" to bind on the springs, only lifting .500" and the valve stem heights arent all equal, so off to the shop to recut the seats and sort the heights, then sort the valve geometry, and once I get lifts finalised, buy new springs, retainers, and sort from there... So not as clean and clear as I was hoping for. Maybe it is just me, but reputable people in the states have generally stuck it to me. And the Taipan has received twin 34mm carbs, digital disi and a 4 into 1 exhaust.. Running sweet now. At least one is nearly ready for Drag day ! 15

sluggy
Since the engine is apart, heads have gone to Marsh, there was .018" difference in seat heights so this is all being sorted. Changing the cam, decided I might as well maximise the potential, the heads are good for around 300hp NA based on the flow numbers, so biggy upsized to 280 @ .050" lifting .611" at the valve. Potentially good for 600 + ish hp at the flywheel. So will remove boost to make it tractable. The 10th December is now a distant memory unfortunately. The pushrods I need (7/16 tapered) have to be cut to length in the US (the only way they will sell them to me), so need to get cam, set up geometry (currently miles out) then order pushrods. Also down speccing on valve spring size as they were way overkill triple K900's.
sluggy
Have been doing a bit on this. Tinware is just about done barring a couple of naca duct holes then out for powdercoat , fire system is in. Have ordered pushrods, springs, retainers, keepers, spare bearings, new rod bolts and have sorted rocker geometry, friends with mills are good friends to have. Wiring is sorted to the engine plug, really just the plug to engine to do, its a short run so shouldn't be long. 4mm steel plate welded in pedal area - floor pan was super flexi. Getting all the flexi brake/clutch lines remade as they have been in the car a while. Really not that far away... famous nearly last words.... March 2017.
sluggy
Just in case anyone has been thinking.... I wonder what happened to this. I have hit a major curve. The holes in the heads that the pushrods pass through are making contact with the pushrods at about 3/4 lift... File it out I hear you say, but alas, these need to seal against the pushrod tube seal, and they have already been moved so they are hard against the valve cover rail. And welding and machining opens a whole new can of worms. So to "fix" the interference issue, I will be reassembling, trying the set up with the old smaller cam and maybe go to a different ratio rocker if the adjusting screw centreline is closer to the pivot point, and hopefully I can find enough clearance to make it work. I can probably sort it and have crappy rocker arm geometry, Ill go there if I have too. Pushrods are 1/2" diameter and tapered at the ends. Because this engine is not exactly off the shelf, Pauter (the manufacturers) were contacted, they no longer have castings made and all their current heads are billet at the amazing price of $8k usd a pair (holy fuck is the correct expletive here). Unfortunately if plan A fails this is where I am at, which is why I have mothballed it for a while. This week, next weekend Ill get it together and start trying shit.
sluggy
Bit of a break between drinks.... Basically shelved it due to the above, and a chev takeover situation. So I have finally started looking at this again and I have a long winded plan, the heads that I could have bought 18 months ago are no longer available, so with the guidance of Dr Gouk racing engines, we will be getting the existing heads scanned, and another set of pauter heads scanned, and amalgamating the rocker box from the pauter heads onto my heads, once the design is all finalised they will be milled out of aluminium billet. Time frame.... 12 plus a bit months, but hey why hurry right !! It was either the above, or try and sell what I have and buy another engine. The Pauter blocks now have a spread bore so you can run up to 108mm bores, so the crank/cam and everything is different to what I have.
Popular Post sluggy
And Im back, actually been doing a bit of work on this. Previous plans have led to abject failure, so have taken a deep plunge to do this right, once (although cheaped out on gearbox a bit) Have started selling off most of the engine bits and gearbox shown in previous posts here, and Im sure I will be left with a pile that will be added to the cupboard of broken dreams.. If anyone needs a new T3/T4 turbo, eboost 2 , tubosmart wastegate and bov... all for sale and more, listing in FS sooon. I have bought a Mendeola 2D box with a vertigate shifter, pro ringed, spool set up. Not new, but the previous owner put 980hp to the wheels through it, so it should hold up. Also bought a new engine, it is 3 months away, basic specs are 90 stroke x 109.5 bore , G42-1450 turbo, methanol injected (8 injector set up). Going away from any thoughts of street driven to dedicated drag car. Pic is similar to what it is, without the mount and inlet/exhaust going the other way for a rear engined set up. There is potential for a lot more HP than I think I will be able to put through the chassis I have. Longer term a tube frame chassis may be the go. I started this thread 7 years ago..... pre death is now the goal... 24

Popular Post sluggy
Most of the engine is here, so time for some cutting and tucking. Waiting on piston pins and some hardware. Also going to a fueltech ecu, so I have a link fury and 2 race tech dashes up for grabs if anyone is looking for one. Will try and update this a bit more regularly as I make progress. This is just mocking up, fitting everything in and then will do the engine build once that is all sorted. 47
Popular Post sluggy
Oh the delays... After much looking and talking to authorities, the potential horsies versus the VW pan chassis I have is not going to fly. So I went looking for a chassis that will work with the power plant I have. I have found this in the UK. It is heading back to the chassis builder for more work ( Cotsweld engineering). Not sure when it will be down here, but a much better option and less likely to kill myself, which is a positive. Chassis is built to SFI specs to a 7.5 second standard. Intention is to add bars to get it to 6.5 s spec (not that it will ever go this fast) so completely future proofed. Rear end will be re done to make it IRS, currently a swingaxle set up. So one goes to the garage of broken dreams, and the project continues... year 9... 25 1

Popular Post sluggy
The blue car is still in the warehouse after a poor attempt at selling it, so Ive decided to get it at least running. But not flat 4 powered. Ive never owned a rotary, so I guess its about time. Might improve local salability further down the track, or maybe one of the many things I burden my kids with when I cark it. I have an adaptor for the transaxle and a flywheel and clutch coming in, finally found some motivation to get working on it. Should be a bit of fun.. Shifter is in, just need to work out a morse cable set up, usually uses rods, but the cage is well in the way, so ill jimmy something up to bang gears.
Popular Post sluggy
Engine is an easy fit... seats mounted ecu in gear shift working, have a radiator need to work out airflow and water plumbing front to back, or is it back to front... still a big list but chipping away at it. 24
Popular Post sluggy
Have finally finished the engine/box/wheelie bar mount. Came out OK. Some time later I thought scatter shield, which it needs so will attempt to get that done this week. Then it is onto radiator. Thinking of running rectangular aluminium section under the pan, then transition to round at the hosey connections.
Popular Post sluggy
And exhaust pics, not my work, using shores nz to do fab work on this thing, mostly because I can stick metal together, but my finish work is crap... Header is all in sch 40, dump pipe from turbo is a 4" drain pipe. Chute mount is on.. I guess thats progress ! I am making a run at this thing and the Chev, mostly because i have a 1 way ticket out of here in late April and wont be back for 6 months. I would love to have this thing and the chev running and all together before I go. Wont make it anywhere near a track, but a hoon down the road is in order. Ive owned the car for 10 years, its overdue... 22
