mattescort's 1973 Galant 16L Project discussion

wow, that's just like the one my Dad had as our family car when I was a lad, in the late 70's. in fact, it must be within a few months of our old one - less than 1500 plates between them (ours was april '73, IIRC). it'll be an nz-assembled 16L made at todd motors. ours was metallic green, with dark brown interior.

yes, they rust out badly at the top of the guard, below the A pillar - I think there's a mud trap around there. it's a feature.

you even have the original factory door mirror. might I suggest you don't put wing mirrors on, they were the preserve only of the GS japanese assembled editions (my mate's Dad ran one of them, orange with black interior and the white GS stripes on the seats.

great to see one of these on the road. you even have the original wheels - kudos.

thanks for the nostalgia trip!

Which window seals are you after, the one that attach to your door card and are in the inside of the glass or the ones the clip onto the chrome trim on the outside of the glass? The ones on the outside you can still get from Mitsubishi or you should be able to get something from either RA Johnstone http://www.raj.co.nz/ or Basis http://www.basisnz.co.nz

Awesome car! I agree those wheels will look sweeeeeeet.

My first car was one of these back in the early 90's, I owned it for about 3 years, bought from a family friend for $1200. '72 GS model. Lots of rust... Metallic bronze with brown interior, white stripes down the seats. Rev counter dash, twin SU type carbs. It had fender mirrors, similar in style to your door mirror but longer stalks (I quickly removed these as they were very uncool back then). 13x6 turbos which i changed to cheviot tridens :S Locked the diff, tinted the windows blah blah

I painted it about 3 times, black, primer grey and finally white. I took off all the badges, the c pillar vent moldings, and the rear quarter orange reflectors and smoothed them over with bog including the fake vents in front of the rear wheels. It cleaned the lines up quite nicely.

My mate ended up buying one as well haha. In the end mine stopped running properly, pinking badly, no power, couldnt drive up the slightest of hills. I swapped it for a mates SR coupe, he later told me the timing chain tensioner/guide had broken in half.

Anyway enough rambling, Im sure you wont do any of the stuff i did to mine thank god, looking forward to pics with the wheels fitted and engine, interior pics if you have any.

195/45s would rule but will require a LOT of slam as they are such a rubber band tyre haha.

Maybe look at 185/55 or 185/50 to get a low pro that isnt toooooo small etc.

175/50/r14 would be my ultimate pick but they can be a prick to get in NZ and getting them in from j-land gets spendy real quick. Some second hand tyre places can get random sizings in amongst their random stocks.

Car is awesome and those wheels are awesome.
