Valiant
Hey people. This has been coming along again The day after I posted this I was looking at it and decided it looked shit. So off it came. I wanted them to look more like this. So this is what I came up with. The cut and shut seat stays are close to done too. So with the drop outs on and the chain and seat stays all in place it was time to put some wheels on it and see how it looks. I'm Pining!

AndyGal
Thats sweet is that the lankiest yet!? You need to change this thread name to Kings Bicycles or something. Petes home made bikes sounds too rangi for the bikes being made haha.
Valiant
Haha thanks Andy, I tried to edit the title but I can't. Rollback or some such. the green one is still the lankiest by about 15mm.

Valiant
Blah blah. You shall have no lankiness, I've beaten you to it and so has cael23.
Valiant
Low spec update. I've recycled the forks off the blue bike. The new steering column has had the end turned down so it sits tightly inside the existing one. It's tig welded around the joint. I'm pretty happy with it. Capped ends on the seat stays and a bridge salvaged from an old seat stay. Since last update I decided the chain stays were a bit short, restricting the size of the chain ring I could run. I've lengthened it by about 25mm and adjusted the length of the seat stay to suit. Born Loser's super sweet Renown/BSA is here for repairs, a comparison photo seemed in order.

Valiant
This is still moving ahead, all be it slowly. It has taken a lot of braizing, filing, and sanding, It's finally ready for sand blasting and powder coating. Home made "lugs" have come up nicely. When I first started the lugs I thought that a bit of detail in them might be good. I carried it on to the dropouts. Here's a 53 tooth chain wheel for it. Double cotter pin bottom bracket?
Chris.QCR
Amazing as always Pete! I really do like the small Details. That should confuse the Purists! I must pop out soon and pick up Renown and sort you out some gingas
Guest
Great stuff! Pair that 53T bad-boy with something suitably small on the rear and this will fly on the flat! WRT the bottom bracket shell, is that top hole an oiler hole (fitting a nipple?) and are those other holes for allen key style bolts to retain the bottom bracket (pinch bolt eccentric bottom bracket style)?!? Cant quite work out what's going on? Looks great.
Valiant
Hi thanks. I have been thinking about a Sturmey Archer S2C hub to go with it, to help me get started. May be. Yes that's right the smaller hole is for an oiler, I haven't tapped it yet. Some early bottom brackets had right hand threads on both sides and 2 small cotter pins to hold them in place. That's what I'm mimicing. Like this I'm not totaly sure when left and right hand threaded bottom brackets took over, by 1920? ish?

Guest
Wow, shit, you're clearly putting plenty of thought into this and inspiring me to give frame building a go. Thanks for the explanation. Never seen cotter pins in a bottom bracket before.
Valiant
Haha yeah when you see one it's a pretty good sign it's a very old bike. Or one with the bottom bracket chopped out of a 90s Avavti mountain bike.... How's your build going? The picture of the track bike with the huge chain ring made me think of this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Minthorn_Murphy
Guest
Ha ha, awesome, next time I'm home, I wonder if I could convince Tranzmetro to board up two miles of the Johnsonville line for me to give this a go! I won some sweet chater-lea pedals on e-bay and have purchased a GB stem and GB handlebars from Hilary Stone so things are steaming along. Will put some pics up when they arrive. Trying to get things finished ASAP. It's first 'shakedown' outing will be a 105 mile ride from London to Norwich in August to see where dad was born. Need to find some 15/17 gauge spokes for the proper period lightweight treatment however haven't had much luck yet. Really enjoying your build/s. Turn your hand to a home made penny farthing/Velocipede next.
Valiant
Nice idea, I don't think Trans Metro will be able to shower you with soot/ash/embers etc quite the way you might like though. I'm sure some spokes will turn up. I want to build a Pantha style BMX next. I have a small pile of bits for it already. Yes something like a Penny Fathing would be awesome. It's quite a step though. You might enjoy this,http://geared-facile.blogspot.co.nz/ It really is an amazing piece of work.
