Truenotch
I think suck is the wrong word to use Rookie. They're good engines and would suit this car well. There is a huge amount of aftermarket stuff available thanks to the stockcar guys and replacement engines are cheap. Couple that with the potential to upgrade to a VVTi 3UZ down the track and you've got a good formula. Here's a cheap setup with manual conversion if you want to start with an early engine: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/toyota/engines/auction-569758939.htm Although the coolest option is a Nissan VK engine IMO.
Rookie
To say that the suck, woul be incorrect Markku, as I stated they are fine as long as you are happy to only ever have 220hp na out of them. They are simply cost prohibitive to make more power, with a set of cams being $1600, not to mention the new inlet manifold/ ITBs, plus the head porting you would need to realise the potential of the cams, you could have bought two LS motors and had more power. Like I said compared to an LS motor they suck. VK's are better, but still suffer the same fate of being wildly expensive to modify.
e30-323ti
If I were to do my E30 again, I'd go for a 4G-63 or a 3rz-fe+T A *UZ would be good if you don't want to 'modify' as other have said due to high $$$/HP Making great progress there!
