GuyWithAviator's 1974 Austin 1300

Recommended Posts

Small update.

Managed to break both the front engine mount and the left one under the clutch.
Sourced the front one from Basis

And the other one from Hawskwood Classics. Was thinner than the original but I just doubled up the broken plate from the old mount and it was fine.

Soon after the accelerator kept jamming on... That would be why.

Quick trip to Zebra and pulled one from a Triumph 2000. Much better.

Also did a temporary repair to the front seat. Hopefully the ones from my Wolseley will be better.

The clutch also wouldn't disengage but just had to swap the clutch arm with a bent one to make it push further.

A day in the life of BMC ownership.

And finally a photo from a drive out to Beachlands

Collected this thing today. Looks much worse than the pictures I was sent and I assumed it was a manual... It's not. Which also means it's single carb. Probably need a tetanus injection after touching it too.

Ah well.

Only eventful thing that happened on the 8 hour trip was the balljoint that undid itself. Hellastance bro.

Got it to run when we got home. Has at least 3 gears, street wasn't long enough to find 4th. Couldn't find reverse either so will give that another go tomorrow. Also has no exhaust.

Since the auto block is different to mine I will most likely sell it as a running engine/gbox combo. The autos have a habit of breaking if not looked after I've heard.

Little things like the wiper switch and bootlid make it worth it to me. Seats are worse than mine sadly.

Finally, here's a photo the neighbor took of me showing how stoked I am with the purchase.

Car had a busy few weeks at the end of last year. Ferrying photographers and models around the city, being used on a film set, road trip up north... Some pictures of that.

Didn't use it for a couple of months while I was out of the city. Came back last week and it was WOF time.

Noticed this at the inspection... Oops.

And the other side had a small amount of play.

So put new wheel bearings in, adjusted the top ball joints (took a shim out) and thought it would be sweet. Here's Dad giving a hand, repurposing my old seat.

Went for a drive around the block and checked it when I came back... But the castle nut pin was sheared off and the nut loose on the thread, meaning the same amount of play. Shit.

Turns out the drive shaft and flange spline was too worn and it was never going to be usable.

Overnight parts from Christchurch from my pile of spares sorted that. Didn't take pictures because I was rushing to put the parts in before the WOF shop closed.

It closed at 6pm and I got there at 6:15pm - the guy was still there and was a GC, we yarned about my car and his 1920s Austin for ages.

So that's all sorted! Won't be using it much as the engine has low oil pressure and needs a crank grind + new bearings. But good to have it back on the road.

So now just after it's wof has run out I'm finally rebuilding an engine for it!

Samdash17's red 1300 was too rusty to save so I picked up his engine and box.
Stripped it down and got the block and crank cleaned up at G.K Reconditioners in Panmure. Picked up all new bearings and gaskets from ACL. Now just need piston rings from Bowden Engine Parts in Taupo.

Will be using the cylinder head from my motor and perhaps the gearbox too. There are numerous other parts to swap over also, crabs, alternator, engine mounts etc.

Next post should see the block painted and assembled and maybe even in the car!

Next big job will be attending to some rust around the 'screen, upper sill and top of the rhs guard. Fun fun.

Pulled the lump out and took off the bits I need.

Threw them at the new block along with the new parts.

Went to install the rings, assumed they were STD size pistons but to my surprise after cleaning them up found they're max oversize. Cue quick trip to ACL to get bigger ones as Dad (mo999) was only up for the weekend to help me.

Put that in and went for a test drive around the block. Had the bonnet off so saw the smoke escaping the loom before we smelt it. Coil had moved over in it's bracket and shorted against the block. Melted the power wire throughout the loom so unstitched that and put it back together with this stuff. Neat. Test drive was good other than that.

My trusty twin carbs were being a right PITA to tune - even OS-GC Threeonthetree couldn't properly tame them.

30904332741_b412e20044_c.jpgUntitled by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr

So thank you to some other GCs, Tim and Sam I have a single carb to run while I get my twins looked at/rebuilt. Had to get overnight parts from Christchurch to run it though, my OG manifold is already suited for extractors.

I've noticed a couple of frost plugs are weeping so I will have to pull them out and put new ones in with some sealant according to the internet. No dramas though as the thermostat gasket needs the same treatment.

Also did a temp repair to the major rust spots, looks okay. Just need to wipe an oily rag over the new paint right?

30957460596_ebc6ec3b7c_c.jpg5DMK7193 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr

And more excitingly/speaking of rust. I pulled the dash out and changed over the middle section to my black vinyl GT dash with tacho (not yet connected). While I had it out poked around the air vent channel and dug out some rubbish and uncovered some rust holes. Put rust kill acid on them for now and will get those repaired eventually.

Dash looks swish though / not the yellowed wiper switch / anyone have a decent spare?

So yeah, this thing got a WOF.

Went for a wee cruise around Auckland's waterfront with Tim and his 1300 this afternoon. Had a little play with the hydrolastic pump. Still keen to put an electric tank / reservoir in the boot for on the go adjustments.

Need to do some work on the exhaust mounts, the rear section of the pipe bangs on the boot floor under deceleration. I think the engine mounts are weak too.

Did some quarter miles. Good fun!

Ran low 20s. Hoping to get into the teens next year with twin carbs and less weight, maybe smaller tires on the front too. Such fun though! Here's an in car video against a 65 Mustang with a 289 V8.

So this isn't an issue anymore... Went for a short wee drive last night.

And then this happened about 45 mins from home. Cable ties only melted once on the southern motorway 5k's from home.
