Small update. Been driving the car every day and it's everyone in my small towns preferred sober driver car :cheese:

Did a few things

Made it more reliable by fitting some Lucas parts (??!!). Electrontic ignition from a later model A Series Metro. Stronger spark and starts easier now.

Couple of cosmetic things:

Went for a decent drive over the summit road today. Put in a 71deg thermostat beforehand and it ran hotter but didn't overheat, just went up and down as it should. Plugs look good after that

I would like to have it a tad cooler though so want to get this fitted before the 17th when I go to Auckland. Is there anybody on OS in the chch area who can weld a small pipe onto this aluminum radiator? Someone has cut the bottom pipe off

It arrived! Several days earlier than quoted. The towie drove it onto the truck even though he was told not to... But seems ok other than that.

Thanks to James (Corbie) and his compression tester I have come to the conclusion of BHG. The outer two cylinders had good compression 120+ and the center two around 40.

I think this happened when the car got a tad too hot for too long through Marlborough.

Hopefully this is all that's wrong with it, and the other noises were just in my head  :blackeye:

Going to swap it over soon - done it enough times now haha.

I'm stuck. Swapped head gasket. Started up great, idled fine, went to rev it and.. it just bogged down and wouldn't pick up again. Started it again, just and it died straight away. Nothing after that, won't start well and if it does won't idle.

It has spark from the coil, has fuel in the carbs and flowing from the pump. I have no idea what's wrong. I do only have a limited amount of knowledge though so could be something simple!

So, any BMC weirdos in Auckland want to give me a hand? It's hard when you don't have a car in a new city.

Beers provided - I just really need to get this going or at least somewhere else to look into.

:(

Split the end casing off today. (Borrowed a puller and bought some gaskets etc from Mini Bitz in Henderson - A++ GC)

We're genuinely surprised it would move looking at the damage. It was what we thought, the bearing destroyed itself and then allowed the gear to move side to side and eat it's teeth into the casings. We were hoping it was only going to have damaged the outer casing and we could just swap that but alas it got the actual gearbox casing too.

Gearbox casing ^

Went to Zebra and met Ben (A++ GC). Grabbed a gearbox out of a Clubman 1100 to put in my car. The only visible difference is the primary gear shaft is bigger on the 1300 so need to get another one from Mini Bitz.

Hoping with the help of some neighbors I can take the motor out and swap it over myself.

OS help appreciated - beers provided!

So now know what the issue it, just got to spend some time/effort to swap it over and hope this gearbox is good and will last a while.

Took the engine out of this tonight, thanks Neal for the loan of the engine crane.

Tomorrow will split the engine and gearbox and swap the new bits over then hopefully get it going again! And give it a long overdue wash.

Most people would have given up on just an Austin 1300 after all these engine/gearbox problems but I quite like this wee car.

/it's not worth anything to sell.

Well, shit.

Bearing.

16961397742_bdabf5a072_h.jpgIMG_1626 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr

Crank.

One tiny bearing carrier that collapsed has travelled through the bearings and eaten them all. It must have gotten very hot down there because the bearings are deformed from the heat.

Plan now is will get  my spare crank in CHCH checked/ground if need be and sent up, get new bearings sourced and slap it all together - but just annoying that it was so close to being done, now a few more weeks of it off the road while this is sorted.

WOF is due next week and the exhaust needs yanking straight and the rear mount replaced. Has anyone got a hoist / pit or even just some ramps I could put the car up on for 10mins so I can fix these? Can travel anywhere in Auckland.
Thanks!

Some of you may have seen this in another thread but I just purchased it...

A 1970 Wolseley 1300. Was attacked by an ex girlfriend with a sledge hammer apparently.

It's in Greymouth so will need to wait a while before I can get to it. Plan to drive it back to CHCH.

But it has some better trim/seats for mine plus supposedly good running gear - should also have twin carbs. Has a WOF and reg is on hold.

So the bits off this should make my Austin better ooorrr if it turns out to be saveable I may consider that.

BMC Sickness is forever.
