Guest GuyWithAviators
Sweet, new page Okay, so engine is back in All seems to be good Lowering into the bay All looks good, huh? At 11:30pm went to start it and 'poof', smoke from the battery leads. Turns out the starter motor didn't want to do it's job. A plastic insulator had failed, as pictured below: After searching through piles of an Auto electrician friends rubbish We found one! And got a spare too just in case After that was fixed it started no worries That prompted a Goodbye Pork Pie spec test drive Discussion and shiz: http://oldschool.co....74-austin-1300/
GuyWithAviators
Picture heavyish post So this thing was running ok, then went to start it and was as smoky as and wasn't running right at all. Whipped the head off and found this: IMG_0109 by mdw1968, on Flickr Doesn't seem right at all. Turns out when we got the cylinder head reconditioned they didn't put a metal bung back in to block a water hole up so it has been pushing onto the gasket. IMG_0108 by mdw1968, on Flickr Got them to put it back in IMG_0154 by mdw1968, on Flickr Not very impressed, won't be going back there. After that was done I put new valve stem oil seals in IMG_0155 by mdw1968, on Flickr and am now in the process of putting new ignition parts on IMG_0163 by mdw1968, on Flickr This morning I picked the car on the right up. I need a new bootlid and had one offered to me for $50 but then this car came along for $60 with a better boot than mine so a bit of a no brainer IMG_0156 by mdw1968, on Flickr Pretty much all there apart from windscreen, carb and distributor. Thinking about taking the bits I need off, taking the body off the subframes then bolting them together to make a SWB fwd go kart thing IMG_5686 by mdw1968, on Flickr How many ado16s is too many? IMG_5691 by mdw1968, on Flickr My one makes the blue on look like it has a lift-kit
GuyWithAviators
Advert by mdw1968, on Flickr Went for the first proper drive after finishing the engine build yesterday. After dramas with plugs oiling up for no apparent reason we were away. Did almost 100 km with no troubles. I forgot how much I enjoy driving The above picture was taken at the ashley gorge and I made it look like a period style advert in photoshop. GuyWithAviators
Not really a proper update, just wanted to share these photos I took on an old roll of film I found. Pretty crap really but I like the look of them. img081 by mdw1968, on Flickr img079 by mdw1968, on Flickr and one of my bike img098 by mdw1968, on Flickr Also, a question, the car runs great now. But after it's been sitting for awhile and I start it, it blows white smoke quite a bit for about 5 mins. I think oil is leaking into the cylinders when it's off but I don't know where. Anyone had this problem with an a-series engine? Cheers
GuyWithAviators
Bought some MG Rostyle wheels from Trademe. Gonna have to pump the front guards a bit as expected to make them fit but otherwise pretty good I think IMG_7168 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr IMG_7170 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Today I went for a drive out to the Ashburton Aviation Museum, took some photos DC3 x Austin 1300 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr IMG_7094 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr During the 250ish km drive burned through about 3L of oil Going to have to pull the engine out again to sort that. Thinking about building up a good strong engine, maybe some performance upgrades. But while I'm doing that I want to put another A series engine in place so I can keep driving it. Has anyone got a cheap and running 1098/1275cc engine lying around? //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35012-guywithaviators-1974-austin-1300/
GuyWithAviators
Well I probably won't have to source another engine now! Today's efforts included getting my $50 parts car that hasn't run for over 10 years going. Swapped carb and distributor over from mine, bit of CRC down its throat, start in gear to unstick the clutch and away it went. Quite impressed to be honest. Video in link below: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=3203818911780&l=2592783663837938750 Will probably take the cylinder head off mine and put it on this, the valves were a bit rusty/sticky. Then just swap subframes between the cars and be away laughing. Hopefully anyway
GuyWithAviators
Got the engine out of the blue car last night. Gonna give it a clean, paint maybe and swap over bits like engine mounts etc from my other engine then swap subframes next weekend. GuyWithAviators
Pulled the head off my old, newly rebuilt engine, engine that burned all the oil.. Found this. Just today I got a new exhaust made for the replacement engine I'm running. All fine except it overheated on the way home from the exhaust shop. Will replace head gasket tomorrow and report back with a full write up on the recent activities.
GuyWithAviators
Been incredibly slack on updates oops. Basically the new, old, engine went in no hassle IMG_0193 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr The old one came out easy as too. Didn't take any pictures of anything after this but it doesn't look much different, just tidier after a quick clean and repaint under the bonnet. Had some overheating issues which turned out to be a metal bung in the cylinder head moving up so got that drilled out and a new one threaded in. Flushed the radiator and put some iron tight in the cooling system. When I get them I'll put up a few videos and a write up on flushing the radiator Since then the car has been running pretty good, burning a wee bit of oil but that's to be expected for an engine that was in unknown condition when I bought it and I've not done much to it! I've also gotten my restricted license so I've just been driving this everywhere because I can. 4-IMG_9131 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr 5-IMG_9127 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr 6-IMG_9121 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr Picked up the white wall flappers for $20 from the swapmeet, never seen them in 12" before. Wicked! Gets quite a bit of attention at school too Along with being picked up and moved across the carpark Discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35012-guywithaviators-1974-austin-1300/
mo999
OK so here are some videos of part of the radiator flushing, (tank removal and flow testing) got carried away after flow testing and reassembled after cleaning without any more video... https://plus.google.com/photos/117887603738322517455/albums/5936290902734520673?authkey=CInbvoCy-9DgDg

GuyWithAviators
Fantastic build mate! I have had 5 of these in the past, one of which was in showroom condition. Absolutely awesome cars! I see you are having a lot of head gasket issues too... I used to use a composite gasket and spray it with copper gasket cement on fitting, they are far more forgiving than the copper equivalents. You can get these from ACL. Great to see you taking the time to build this up... but careful, they are addictive. Last time I had one I gained 4 more in the backyard! If I can help you with anything let me know, I have no parts left but I do know where all 5 cars went with parts and the dude would part with some I am sure. I have resto'd a Mini and an 1100 and am following your build with interest... Great stuff! Cheers for the comments, they sure are addictive. I used the copper gasket cemet last time I did the head gasket, sure did make a change. I just need to hone the block and put new rings in on my spare engine - the current one is on it's last legs. Just for future reference post in here: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35012-guywithaviators-1974-austin-1300/ rather than the project thread
GuyWithAviators
This happened on the way to work yesterday. Oops. So after work we did this: A few weeks ago I scored a complete newly reconditioned 1300 head with later model solid rockers, new gaskets, spark plugs, valves and fresh paint. Threw that on the block and it's running 200% better, smoother, faster and slightly less smokey. Should keep me going for a while until I build up the other engine. Also I snapped the speedo cable months ago and can't find my spare one. Does anyone have one lying around? My wof is due soon and I need it for then Disco: http://oldschool.co....74-austin-1300/
GuyWithAviators
Spot the difference.. Man she pulls now! Haven't properly tuned it yet so the idle sounds like it has a real lumpy cam in it and it pops and farts on the overrun. Wicked!

GuyWithAviators
The 1100/1300 was designed by a company called Pininfarina Other cars styled by them include the Austin A40 The Alfa Romeo Giuletta Spider And other outrageous sports cars: Although more recently they produced this fine example: I saw a Hyundai Lativa on the street one day and noticed the badge on the rear pillar. I thought it would look good on my car to pay homage to it's designers. So after a phone call to Hyundai I had one on my doorstep Kinda cool I think Lastly here's a NZ advert I came across the other day. Creepy af /end fairly pointless post

GuyWithAviators
Started the (re)rebuild of the original engine this weekend. Experimenting with Time-lapse photography so made a quick wee video of the start of it. Hoping next weekend to pull the other engine and swap all the bits over to the new one (starter motor etc) Discuss
