GuyWithAviator's 1974 Austin 1300

Recommended Posts

G'day everyone, thought I'd start a thread for my car as I start to make some bigger changes to it.

Little bit of information about me, I'm 15 - turning 16 in January so I can't even (legally) drive my car yet, which sucks

I don't have a job but trust me I'm trying, thanks Dad for funding my project and one day, hopefully soon, I'll pay you back!

Anyway, the reason you all clicked on this, the car, In August I bought a 1974 Austin 1300 MK III from a group of boy racer wannabees.

I paid $500, it had no wof and the reg had just run out (now on hold)

My plans for it are to get everything working again for January when I get my license and add a few period items along

Also when I can find one and have the money, twin carbs!

8177714424_748f0cf521_z.jpg

The car as soon as it'd been towed home. The idiots had let the suspension down which does look pretty sweet, but was ruining the underside of the car and fairly sure that one of the rear displacers is torn. Maybe one day I'll make something up so it can be permanently this low ;)

Few of the bad points: They said it was overheating and they had tried to put another head on it - turns out it was an 1100 head so didn't work too well. Luckily they still had the 1300 head in the boot.

The interior is in a bit of a bad state.

Now pictures

Engine the day I got it, after about an hour helping my Dad we had it running, roughly but enough to move it up the driveway

Front

8177714286_a97ce8833a_z.jpg

8177683605_ca242203f9_z.jpg

Interior, dash starting to deteriorate, carpets stained and faded (I have dyed them back to blue), small hole in headlining, drivers seat ripped and steering wheel center cracked

8177683775_deb9fd5dbf_z.jpg

First thing I did after this was get rid of the twink and gave it a wash

Most major bit of rust, in the footwell kick panel.

8177682627_73b499b8b0_z.jpg

I will try and update this regularly, have done a couple of major things in the space between August and now but those are for another post :)

Wassup

When I got the car the guys who owned it before me had put an 1100 head on it which didn't work too well.

The next thing I did was get the proper 1300 head reconditioned and new valve seats inserted.

8177712644_329d056ab4_z.jpg

Old 1100 head compared to reconditioned 1300. I think you can tell which one works better ;)

Close up

8177681719_5e84ee10fd_z.jpg

Headless! This was just before it got cleaned up and brand new gaskets etc were put on

8177681483_aa192f01ba.jpg

Before rocker cover went on - looks good. Chose a black paint over the green I think it would have been from factory

The other job done was try and pump the suspension up a bit. Gee it takes ages with just a modified grease gun!

8177711232_9e93d3f931_z.jpg

Dad taking over so I could take some pictures. Only one side had been done in these photos

8177711040_96137fda90_z.jpg

Gotta love hydrolastic!

8177680657_76ac5f068a_z.jpg

Bit lopsided

8177710478_0f9c023c4d_z.jpg

The next thing to think about is some sounds for it. I know these speakers look a bit modern for the car but I plan to run an amp under the seat with an iPod, 6.5"s and tweeters hidden in the dash, 6x9"s under the back seats and sub and separate amp in a suitcase in the boot.

Has anyone done anything like this? Any suggestions for it?

Big thanks to 4AG_Addict for the above speakers :D

8177681277_6282b4930e_c.jpg

Last picture - taking advantage of the limited time I was aloud to have it in the garage and playing around with my fish-eye lens. I like photography :)

Thanks for reading.

A while ago I stripped the interior, fixed rust/protect the metal and painted

Few pictures of this

The only rust inside really. Thanks Dad for welding the patch

I knew one of the rear displacers had a hole in it because one side of the car was slooooooowly lowering itself. Also my rear subframe was bent and cracked.

Picked this one up from one of two 1100's that were lined up to be crushed by tanks :(

They were pretty rusty though. Also grabbed a few bits of trim and what looked like new door rubbers. :D

8177679297_c12715f61a_z.jpg

8177709344_3c6eb864d5_z.jpg

Half stripped

Picked up a new-old stock complete rear suspension bearing kit off Trademe - such a random thing to find!

8202459016_145d1f9609_z.jpg

Taking old bearing stuff out. Had to go buy a bearing puller - the crowbar didn't work

8201365865_88fd2f5315_z.jpg

Old compared to new one. Shows how little the bearing moved making the grooves over nearly 40 years. Weird

8202457514_770cd13284_z.jpg

Recon subframe being put together. Chuck it in the car this weekend :D

Painted the displacer red so it goes faster.

crab5s.png

One of the guys on the photoshop thread did this for me :D Cheeeeers

I like the white or blue - matches the interior. What do you guys think? Once I can afford it I'd like to paint my wheels.

Which by the way being a high school student with no job will take a long time - so if anyone in the chch/kaiapoi area needs any work done, let me know :)

Sweeping workshops, mowing lawns, cleaning your car etc.

Cheers :)

Some progress made tonight on removing the subframe and getting ready for the new one

This weekend it goes back together :D

Had to slam it again to get it out. Looks mint

8207022753_6038347de6_c.jpg

Made a bit of a mess when letting the hydrolastic fluid out. Sprayed all over my face too. Anti-freeze tastes gross!

8207020935_cfab4b2f5f_z.jpg

And it's out! All cracked and horrible looking

8207021815_2a826a8c7d_z.jpg

Old frame against new one. Chuck it in on saturday

8208109894_3817eb5e96_z.jpg

Pics will come then :D

Alright guys I need your opinions on something.

The car currently has no mirrors and I'd like to get some.

1. What style

2. Where to put them

Taking into account that when I start driving it I'll be a learner driver so probably need good visibility and I'd prefer something cheap-ish.

Pictures for ideas and inspiration

Bought this today, not really sure why, was really cheap though. There are a few good bits on it, no motor. Get it sometime this week

Have been thinking about something like this potentially. With a BBQ in the boot maybe. Or just have the back end it in the garden as a seat

Perhaps not as elaborate

Taking anything I can off my other car ready to cut it in half

8281614319_1cb10a9066_c.jpg

10 points to whoever can tell me what's missing from this picture

Hint, it's not seats or interior

Did this the other night, I'll cut it in half soon and clean up/make the back end into a seat for the garden

8289007107_c39487f15f_c.jpg

I recently had to go to Invercargill for my Pop's funeral but while I was there Dad found a TM auction advertising 1300 parts not far from where we were.

Went to go see what he had and came home with a steering wheel centre which was better than mine, some seat belt components, an engine cover which I'm missing and best of all..

Factory Twin Carbs!

8290066956_d4f08376ff_c.jpg

They came off a Woolsey 1300

Need rebuilding and cleaning up so will do that and after New Years put them on. Excited :)

Finally another post. Woohoo.

Here's what's happened recently:

1. Got new tail pipe made and put on

2. Fixed rust in sill and stopped rust on top of guard with filler/paint

8329008786_a602fd63ed_c.jpg

2. Attempted to get Wof.

3. The lights and indicators wouldn't go, they do that sometimes, so convinced the Wof guy the plug had come off while I furiously wiggled some wires and bashed the switch hoping they'd work. Which they did :D

3. Failed Wof on worn brake pads

4. Bought and replaced brake pads

5. Got Wof!

8327934681_65a5bb48b9_c.jpg

6. Drove (well Dad, I haven't got my license yet) to Lyttleton

8327935619_f7ae379776_c.jpg

7. Took photos

8327911105_862a590d65_c.jpg

8. Took Dash out and fixed wiring fault/cleaned dials

8327932955_3889d00a0e_c.jpg

9. Discussion of this long update: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35012-guywithaviators-1974-austin-1300/

Wassup

Got sick of being burnt by super hot vinyl seats so bought some seat covers, pretty ugly but better than fluffy leopard print

8358755775_8e184e2f52_c.jpg

Went to pick-a-part for a geeze and found some sweet stuff

8359820908_92a2537b69_c.jpg

An alarm out of a Lada Samara, it even works

Some really nice sounding and loud horns out of an MG

8359819450_aba32776d4_c.jpg

And this sweet PYE push button am radio out of a peugeot which will be mounted somewhere there. It even works too

8358755439_b1aea11b3c_c.jpg

Twas my 16th birthday on Sunday and tomorrow I'm going for my learner license, will be mint to be able to drive my car properly!

Assuming I pass the test

Sick of putting oil in this every time I drove it so decided I better replace the oil rings and do the clutch while I'm at it.

This will also be a good chance to clean up and paint the engine and bay.

Any suggestions on engine colour? Something period correct

8478154026_23dc32746f_c.jpg

This picture shows my new mirror and how the ride height should look (front) compared to how I have it (back). It raised up because the engine is out

8478154176_a6015bf8a7_c.jpg

The question for this is: How do I mount the seat and handlebars? ;)

Got around to dismantling the engine,

Head, flywheel etc.

8553977612_dea416fde3_c.jpg

Gearbox, doesn't look too bad in there

8552873479_c3c05fb970_c.jpg

Block and a piston, needs a good clean and paint. Colour ideas? Notice the condition of oil/compression rings

8552873419_c9289d901b_c.jpg

Piston cleaned up.

8553975366_925f4434d2_c.jpg

And finally, this is one of the bearings. Hmm haha.

I'm surprised it ran as well as it did

Have new bearings, rings, gaskets, timing chain and clutch plate on their way.

Started painting the engine bay too
