GARDRB Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 Money has been deposited for the Corolla, so I'm almost ready to make a purchase. I have just posted this on the link forum. Quote So I have a UCF20 1UZ in a KE70/CE71 Corolla wagon. I'm having a few factory ECU issues and have been looking at Link options. Brand new is out of my price range at the moment, and I'm looking at the following ECUs Silver housing Storm G4 for $750 Red housing Xtreme G4 with loom that the guy wants $1500 for Black housing Storm G4+ for $1400 I know that the Silver G4 doesn't have 8 injector outputs and the other two do. How different are the G4 and G4+ platforms? Is this something that can be upgraded with a firmware upgrade, or are they quite different? I'm leaning toward the Storm G4+, but just wanted to hear what my best options are. Quote
Roman Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 G4 cant upgrade to a G4+ or anything like that. I'd recommend downloading PClink for both G4 and G4+ and see how they compare. G4 software is alright but a bit more janky than G4+ which has had another 10 years of updates or whatever. If you've got a serious itch for ethrottle, that's the only reason I'd consider the G4 xtreme over a G4+ storm. (assuming G4 xtreme does ethrottle, cant remember) Quote
Stu Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 G4+ is a fair step up functionality wise and recommended over G4 Quote

Gonna sit on my cash a little longer, but the black Storm is leading the charge at the moment, especially with the 1UZ guy not getting back to me about my fuel pump control. Quote

Note you can add ethrottle to the Storm G4+ later if you need with an expansion module https://dealers.linkecu.com/G4RET Link do one but there are other DBW modules around that should also work Quote
Roman Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 @GARDRB Fuel pump control is simple, you just assign an output to turn on when rpm is over 100 (or whatever) Assuming there isnt a specific function for it which does that. Quote
GARDRB Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 Nah I meant on the factory ECU, the fuel pump control output isn’t working 1 Quote
Stu Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 Piggyback an old link on the stock setup to just run the pump if you get desperate 1 Quote

Admittedly it does also have a Bluetooth adapter squeezed in there too because im not a total caveman. I actually did a couple of seasons with the emulator hanging out the side of the ecu instead because the barry is strong in this one, plus it worked fine / chip burning costs money. In fact @Roman why do your videos not contain ecu data overlay? 2 Quote

Yeah, pull to ground to switch the circuit opening relay that controls the pump, then factory functionality gives you another pin that bypasses the fuel pump resistor, but I'm not running a resistor, so the circuit opening relay runs the pump at full power. The ECU pin isn't pulling to ground, it's staying high. Kelvin from The Cartune Company, who is supposed to be the 1UZ guru, (and I have paid for wiring diagrams and support), was meant to get back to me early last week, but I have heard nothing. It will still run if I earth the relay myself, but that's not ideal. I'd read about 1UZ ECU capacitor problems, and opened the ECU up, and there is definitely some capacitor fallout. So I've got some new caps. But it sounds like the fuel pump control pin might be a transistor issue. I don't really want to become an electronics tech and feel like my effort and money are better spent on an aftermarket ECU, which has always been a future plan anyway. Free selling on TradeMe prompted me to sell the spare car, and I have enough money for a semi-decent second-hand Link. I'm pretty keen to pull the trigger on this G4+ Storm because it does everything I want and is about half the price of buying a brand new ECU. One of the guys on the Link forum was extolling the virtues of a G4X over G4+, but let's be honest, it's an overpowered street car that's just got a factory 1UZ in it, so it doesn't need anything too fancy. kpr Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 g4, g4+, g4x, g5 software all looks pretty much the same. some things work a little differently. the later stuff obviously has a bunch more features and can do more stuff. But the basics are all there on the earlier stuff. a well tuned engine on any of the above, you arent going to notice the difference driving it. If someone tells you your engine is going to run amazing going from a g4+ to g4x, ignore them 2 1 Quote
