CatatonicChimp's 1977 Trabant 601

Recommended Posts

6V batteries are a bit harder to come by these days - but ring Ray Hartley Motors in Haning St (off the top end of Tory St) - he'll be able to get you one or point you in the right direction.

He sells them for MGB's

Also - I'm mildly excited by the prospect of one of these coming to an OS meet one day..

Which suburbs are you based in and what are your plans for the Trabbie??

*off to check out build thread for Trabbie plans*

edit - looks like this is a 12V battery in this one...

Is an easy conversion possible? 6V batteries are EXPENSIVE - for the cost of a 12V battery and a set of bulbs and some pissing around making a new alternator mount it won't cost that much more than just buying a 6V battery - plus you will have so many more options when it comes to comforts like a stereo etc...

Yip will have to update the build thread soon,

Its possible to go to 12v, getting the coils, alternator and switches that need to be replaced are not that expensive but once you account for shipping its probably around the same.. my plan is to go back to factory condition, including keeping the 6v. Although I might sneak in a electronic ignition plate instead of the old points at some point. I am not going to rule out 12v, but for at least for the start I'll wear the cost of 6v and see how she performs.

I am in Miramar, so assuming you keep the meetings at the Strathmore Local, it will be an easy trip to get there.

i did all the compliance work on the green trabant, the one that is now in southwards, a few years ago, that was running a 12v system, i work at vehicle testing station/wellington vehicle compliance, had to do full rebuild on brakes, get it running, had rust in the floorpan and around the firewall area, needed seatbelts throughout and we had to make a custom plate that was welded in to the rear parcel tray area to accomodate rear seatbelts, had to change the headlight to dip to left and a few other bits

have to admit was awesome to go for a cruise round the hutt once we got it all running properly, got sum looks n made me want one haha

It takes Hydraulic Oil, it has at least four different names, but its still hard to get hold off in small quantities and nobody seems to know what your talking about when you call them about it...

"Its sole passenger comfort was a primitive heater, in which a fan simply blew hot engine air into the interior—along with “the smell of freedom.”"

No not kerosene, but just as dangerous if you have an exhaust leak in the engine bay...

Yes, I rember people got gassed and died.

they make strawberry flavored 2 stroke oil for scooters, they would be cool to use.

This is a socialist car, not some decadent, western capitalist, enemy of the people's car. The use of strawberry smelling 2 stoke is treason against the Trabant and the people, any such decent with be dealt with swiftly and decisively.

Next you will be asking me to ride a capitalist pink scooter with a pink helmet :P

what are they stinging you for the fees if you dont mind?

not sure yet... my freight forwarder hasn't said anything yet.. but I know from tracking the container on the wellington ports website that its free storage lasted until Wednesday... I have a feeling I may have already paid for fumigation and cleaning... so I am not too sure on that... I am just hoping that it won't be crazy....
