KIRK
yeh lock nuts work good on lawn mowers. normal ones undo themselves
rot808
i think more steinlagers and garlic bread would have easily solved this problem
Testament
ok something happened to the timing/points at random. now the engine kicks back like a mule on p when you try to start it. if you pull it hard enough to get it to actually turn over without ripping the skin off you hands it starts and juuuuuuust runs, and it fires and alternates direction of crank rotation......... Vintage Grumble
First thing you need to check: have any money badgers been in your shed?
KIRK
sheared flywheel key probably. take flywheel off to investigate. Usualy the nut needa be done up to 55-60 ft-lb/realy tight, otherwise you have this problem.
Rookie
^ Yea, na, that's not the problem. Flywheel has been off half a dozen times, timing adjusted, points regapped, wiring double checked, condenser replaced, coil replaced. Nothing helped. KIRK
you're sure the key hasn't bent slightly? iduno
Rookie
Yea heaps sure, and we adjusted the timing so that it is firing just before TDC and still no dice, got me fucked.
Goat
Hmm. Whats its meant to be firing at? Set it to TDC? It would be firing too early if its kicking back/bareley runs. Set to ATDC for lolz?
sentra
...a rookie mistake
Rookie
Those victas are really reliable last time I heard..... Anyway, We know nothing about this motor. I had a quick look for timing marks but found none, so we are just winging it. I think the only thing for it is to keep playing with the timing, but it seems odd that it was running and now it isn't. Goat
but it seems odd that it was running and now it isn't. Because 2stroke
Testament
it's going to get fitted with adjusties shortly
Testament
and by adjusties I mean massive slots in the timing plate
Steelies
bad ass. aaaahhhhhh the mysteries of drome racing 2 strokes rolling accurate/constant fuel mix to rule that out? not that it sounds like a fuel problem, but still.. cant wait to hear what minor oversight it turns out to be
Vintage Grumble
Carb diawham ok?
Rookie
It's got a china spec pit bike carb on it, so no diawham. And it was vibrating the idle screw in, but I doubt this is the problem, it used to start like a champ, and now it doesn't, black magic I say. KIRK
could it be the decomp playing up? what type does it have? i had similar problem on a tecumseh once. felt like it was timing but nothing was wrong. Would kick back, rip arm off etc and chuff some smoke but never start. So i just put another of my engines on the mower...however i did then strip it down and it had super heaps of carbon build up er where and the head gasket showed signs of leaking. otherwise it was mint so i was stumped. i put the coil and flywheel off it onto my bike and they work fine so the problem wasn't spark... they have the port/slot style decomp not an external poppet style one. Testament
there is a manual decomp valve but you never use that. has frikken mean comp otherwise. from observation the points open and the piston is still 10mm or more from tdc which seems like way too much. hence i think i will just slot to the plate more to get the spark happening at or close to tdc
