Popular Post M_C
Washing the accumulated storage grim off Felicity revealed her lovely condition. Oh she looks good and I must admit a few caresses were shared as she was tucked back into the garage... With inspiration flowing the W50 gearbox and Pinto bellhousing was trial fitted. Success! As it came together nicely. Then I left my rubber arm a bit too close to the guys and ended up accidentally buying something... Why chose this jellybean shape of '90's excess...? Because YB Turbo. Hmmmm a little distraction, again. Thank goodness I have an understanding wife as I dragged this home.
M_C
So for a short while my garage looked like this.Temptation was there for an engine transplant. Not overpowering though as I have just broken up with my overpowered turbo Geisha girl and really it was a short term dalliance with Cossie and a nice new home was found for her so I can finally get back to my long term flame Felicity.Closer investigations on the mystery package angry(?) pinto revealed some nice touches.Clearing out some of the scenery from the dent in the sump showed a nice wire tie on the sump bungBreathers have a guard in the rocker covers, cam does not seem to have a marking but lobes seem to be of decent size. HmmmmmmEdging slowly closer to first test start up.
M_C
Hmmm, been a while so thought I had better prove I turned a spanner on the car...Approved summer use of engine crane
M_C
I was very happy to find some ARP bolts here. But not so happy when my three clutch plates in the garage don't fit Pinto to W50. Can someone suggest sources and prices for clutch to suit Pinto to W50? Thanks!
M_C
Pulled all the font out as the easy way to get the engine and gearbox back in, And while the suspension seemed pretty good for the track and hill climbs, lowering springs + Big Bilsteins = Better
M_C
Time for a little tidy up while the engine is out: Before During After Hmmmm shiny
M_C
Big thanks to Elliot and Mark for sorting out the matching Pinto - W50 clutch. Toyota Hiace petrol, Autostop part R8593. CheeRS guys! This allowed final bolt up of gearbox, All went well until I noticed a couple of busted bolt holes in important places. Spy the sneaky patch of daylight where it shouldn't be. One was solved with a dodgy artful dodge. The starter motor one may have to receive similar treatment...? Hey. the engine is getting closer!
M_C
Open wide... And YES! In at last! Some bump stops on the Bilsteins and in they go as well And rolled her out of the garage, all the better to admire her Must have been a bit excited to blur the picture... Not as low in the front as I was hoping. Down maybe 10-15mm vs V6 on old springs. Still more low needing to be achieved, but that can come later.
Popular Post M_C
Oh Boy I got plenty excited seeing the engine bay like this.... Its not nearly as close to going as first appearances suggest though. The banananana extractors and 48 Delortos are just sitting there. Spot the gaps. And a few minor details like the gearbox mount is now 25mm too far back behind the pinto perhaps making the driveshaft too long. It still looks the business though!
M_C
So I'm off for a wee sabbatical overseas so Felicity has been packed away nice and safe. Cheers Deane. Was super cool even just being towed up the drive in her, really need to get her driving again when I return.
Popular Post M_C
Made it back to the land of the long white cloud. How lucky are we to live in NZ! Little Felicity has been retrieved from storage and dust washed off. Trailering her to the new home involved a stop for an Amazing weekend at Leadfoot watching Elliot get top 4 in pre 75! Stunning. Now my enthusiasm is running high and super happy to have her back in my garage.
M_C
I could not resist buying a set of mags that came up. I really like the look of the steels, but they have not appreciated kurb bashing on the race tracks and are no longer round. Plus a bit more offset and width would be nice to try and fill out the guards so didn't take much persuasion. Here they are with the balloon spec tyres they came with. Goldmember ready for insertion. But not for Felicity. BigMac's wagon Betty has been dormant for too long so now is due for a bit of love. After an engine rebuild she was leaking too much oil, yes even too much for an old Ford! So out it came for new gaskets. Mission creep to paint in full Goldmember spec paint was allowed. How do you wind up a mate? Show him a random engine part after the engine has been sealed up and dropped back in the hole... Why is there a cam chain tensioner still in the box of parts to be bolted onto the engine mate.....? Oh Bugger! Open up the engine again to check. Yes the new one is in there. Arg, try to achieve as good a gasket seal second time round without pulling it all apart again. Stupid tall wrong fitting wheel nuts had to go. Nice new ones on today. Hmmm, front wheel studs barely long enough. Rears are way too short so added to the list. Turning the engine over by hand after she has been sitting for so long revealed a big zero compression. So off with her head! Bores look good with no lip at the top and even traces of the hone so looks like the bottom end is OK. Top end looks very clean inside. No idea what the cam in as it doesn't appear to have any markings. It's had a bit of love in the past with some reasonable looking porting. Rough measure of valve lift is around 10.5mm for inlet and exhaust vs Haynes 6.3mm standard. Valve are also a little larger at inlet 44.5 vs std 42mm and exhaust 38 vs std 36mm. Valve seals look a little corroded so will have that dealt to and see how we go.
M_C
A Most Excellent Day! After a fair bit of hard work I finally own my own garage and it was A Most Excellent Day to get Felicity installed. Head back from a tickle up. Nice to hear favourable comments from the reconditioner about the bit of porting work. Its not a monster engine, just had a bit of love. A nice surprise was to find the cam gear on it was actually quite a nice dowel version. -Currently in pieces on the bench. I will keep using this as it looks way more secure than the adjustable one that I was going to put on it from the box of bits, currently trial fitted on head. Shame I don't know the cam specs to time it properly, something like 108 degrees seems about right? Time for some more GoldMember paint! Looking way better than to old color so should be faster... Pressie time, YAY!
Popular Post M_C
Gave myself a bit of a scare looking at the date of my last update and how young my kids look in the pics. When did this become an annual update...? Amelia has been promised to learn to drive in Felicity and is pretty keen so time to get it done. Wife wants to move house again which may not help progress. Anyway that's enough waffling for context, time for pictures. Spent some time trying to setle the mystery package pinto properly into the engine bay. Removed the brake master cylinder to give more access for trying to get the headers to fit. Be rude not to have a look inside as yes, it's been quite a while. Coby extractors were being difficult and anyway I am pretty keen to get the banananana headers in there. How hard can it be...? Hmmmm, that's not going to work. And the sump is hitting the cross member and steering rack. Even after replacing the square rubbers with taller round donuts it was still not a happening thing. The wish list has included a World Cup cross member for a while so when one came past I grabbed it. And what do you know, it works! We have clearance, Double bonus! Will tickle up the ragged holes which is how I managed to get it in the first place. Here is the beautiful customised sump. I think I'll blow some black paint over it and call it done.
M_C
Yay! I got some more work done and and update before another year passed! Still not flash when the update at the top of this page (6) is from 5 years and 4 houses ago. Not too bad though when one of those houses was a 2 year sabbatical on a boat with my family and we moved to a new city. Latest house does not have room for Felicity so she is stored at a friends house and it’s been far too long since I have seen her. Thankfully the engine is home so I can make a little progress. Have done some really important things like painting. Then tried to remember how this lot went back together after pulled it apart over a year ago... Bit of beer assisted head scratching and it was easier that I thought. Looks sexy front and centre and has new electronic points. Just hope it works as well as it looks? Had the genius idea of gutting an old worn dizzy and pulling the drive gear off so I can pump up oil pressure without turning the engine Resulting shell on the right. ARP just look so good. looks like someone has given this a bit of love? Valves look a bit larger than standard and maybe some smoothing been done? I was happily surprised that my genius gutted dizzy easily pumped up enough oil by hand to pour out the oil spray bay! I thought I may need to get a drill on the end of it.
M_C
Wondering how I can work out the correct cam timing for an unknown specification cam? Markings on the nose of the cam appear to be “308D 308D 06 9341 JG” I have no idea whose cam it is and can’t find any references to any of these numbers. looking at specifications for pinto cams the timing for full lift on number one intake varies from 113 degrees for mild to 104 race cams, but do not follow a linear progression. Different makes and cams tend to move around a bit. The valve lift is 11.13mm inlet and 10.19mm outlet at the valve with std clearance. Some posts on the UK sites suggest timing it with equal lift for inlet and exhaust at TDC on #1 like this post. #http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=836432 This would equate to 105 degrees which seems pretty advanced? Here is a graph of the lift I made from measuring the valve lift. Degrees is crank not cam degrees. Lift is in thou and measured off the valve retains with standard clearance to cam. Any thoughts or tips on where I should put the cam timing to start with?
M_C
Very excited to have Felicity back in my own garage after far too long (again...) Kids are now a whole lot older than when I first dragged her home way back in 2011! Comes in handy for steering her back into the garage. Will have to go back and reload some of the early pics in this thread I think. Safely settled back at home at last. While she was a garage ornament at a mates place for over a year I got them to do a little fabrication on their racing off season. Worldcup cross member turned out to be a little twisted to go with the flogged out mounting holes so two was made into one good one. lightweight cross member mounting nuts were ditched and tubes welded through the chassis rails so they are now through bolted. Firewall to chassis rails gussets were welded in. Heater bowl lip removed and welded up so the pinto has a bit of clearance. Yay! Almost ready for engine.
M_C
Insert engine tab A into slot B... W50 on the back of a pinto made a bit of a juggle to fit in one piece, but GoldMember is home (again). Hopefully not too many more months to be lost before driving her at last. Gearbox sits further back than it did on the V6 so new cross member and a shortening of the driveshaft is needed, and perhaps trim on the tunnel as well. I had bought a steel steering knuckle from Rally Design to replace my tired doughnut one. But then found I needed the short one. Sourced the correct one, cheers Pete. Looking at how rotten the old one was I pretty happy to have replaced it.
Popular Post M_C
On the list to do was to get rid of the horrible red sausage dog petrol tank. No idea where this thing came from originally. Mounted behind the rear seat and lying across the boot it seemed designed to create fuel surge. And not really tied down properly. Back to a standard escort fuel tank that will be much easier to certify for the future. On the tank I was installing some clever person thought it was a good idea to attached the fuel filler cap with screws long enough to go through the old bellows and nearly out the other side! Combined with the perishing its not really ideal... So time for a new bellows it is then. And hoses and clamps. Disappointing to find my Super Sexy headers were made to fit around a reverse peddle box with the master cylinders inside the firewall. Dam, they look so good. But at over $1,000 for a certifiable peddle box and then still some fettling and sealing issues with the 5 separate pieces I bought some Pacemaker ones and sacrificed the looks and a few hp to get going. Even these ones are making issues trying not to cook the brake master cylinder and brake lines. Timing the dissy and building oil pressure without the spark plugs in, just the #1 plug strapped to the block I found that the coil is making a good spark and was quite happy to earth the other three cylinders through me. Ouch. I don't think I make a good spark plug... And Then She Was Alive!!!! https://youtu.be/Tt31HSOstnM This was the first push of the starter (After I worked out I had the dissy 180 degrees out) So Happy she just fired right up and would even idle when cold and not really tuned! I am sure the neighbors enjoyed the open headers as much as I did. The to do list is still pretty long to get driving. As a mate said, 80% done and 80% to go.
M_C
Taking Felicity out to get a drink from the local liquor shop and an angry sounding beautiful XT pulled in behind. Couldn't resist a photo. Much excited as time for exhaust and sundry bits of fabrication!
