JasonK
went for a drive today (Napier to palmy and back) and my battery light was flashing on then going off again for most of the trip then about a couple of k's from home it came on and stayed on, when I stopped there was a smell of hot/burning electrics and the altenator was pretty hot (not sure if it normally is). I tested the battery and it had about 15v running with lights and radio on. I have recently replaced the brushes and bearings in the altenator. its got me beat, any ideas? Valiant
I think you have a faulty voltage regulator. Or the wiring to it is faulty if it is a remote regulator.
KKtrips
15V with lights and battery on is going to be overcharging bro.. should be max 14.4V at 2000ish rpm with no real battery load. My guess is regulator too..
JasonK
god you guys are quick, I wondered if 15 was a bit high, would this have done any damage to the altenator or battery/electrical system
Valiant
Shouldn't have. Get your alternator fixed, check your battery water level, give the battery/battery tray a rince if the acid has boiled out, make sure all your dash lights work etc.
EvoBilly
put multimeter on and test it when the light is flashing on and off see if the charge sits level? does the light on flash on and off well moving or just at idle if its well moving i would say theres a wire short somewere

plasticdash
check the alternator case is well earthed to motor and chassis. (and the engine/chassis earth lead isnt kaput)
84_S12
Some alternators use the same plug for the sensor and charge light, but the polarity of the connections is reversed. Worth checking this out - it caused me some short term confusion when I changed from a Mitsubishi alternator to a Lucas one in the Silvia, and had similar symptoms to what you are describing.
