Mikey's Datsun 240z

Pic dump of bonnet painting.

I did it with color matched laquer in those "Colorpak" cans. The match was pretty much right on. The whole bonnet had quite a lot of bog in it, it's got a lot less now. Went through 4 cans of primer and 3 cans of color.

I'm happy as with how it came out. The close up shot looks pretty orangepeely but that's the worst of it and I've not cut and polished yet. It'll do until I get it painted properly, and it's a lot better than the huge crack.

Some stuff has happened but nothing exciting.

I fixed some rust in the floors, stitch welded a little bit, seam sealed and sounddeadened a little bit.

I also got a Honda wiper motor and linkage and cut it to pieces and put it back together. I now have wipers that don't suck bawls and even park correctly!

In case you don't know I've ordered a new engine, ha:

eng.jpg

It's a VQ35DE from a 2006 350z with 6 speed transmission, it's done around 30,000 km. I'm planning of upgrading to a R200 LSD and CV axles while I'm at it. And probably converting to rear disk brakes and vented front brakes.

It's on a container ship and has just gone through the Panama Canal:

hd-mirafloresjpg_30596.jpg

It should arrive at Auckland on May 1st.

That is all.

¡MAXIMUM EXCITE!

Stink things:

  • [*:fy268j5v]Crack in sump.
    [*:fy268j5v]Bent vacuum spigot.
    [*:fy268j5v]Broken starter motor mount on engine.
    [*:fy268j5v]It's all pretty mucky/corroded/surface rusty.
    [*:fy268j5v]Unknown unknowns.

Good things:

  • [*:fy268j5v]None of the stink things are too hard to fix.
    [*:fy268j5v]Turns over, has compression.
    [*:fy268j5v]Reportedly has 33k on the dial.
    [*:fy268j5v]Everything's there.

Tomorrow the L24 goes. I drove it to work today, I can't help but feel said. I mean, the engine runs pretty good, sounds super and has old world charm (by old-world-charm I mean it shakes the car to peices).

But omelettes require broken eggs....

Just so you don't think I'm fucking about:

TBH I kinda have been fucking about. I wanted to get more done, but on Saturday I was uber hungover and only achieved anything 'cos 10speed was there. Sunday I was sans hangover but was helping other peeps with their cars. Will try harder next time.

Also, in my weakened hungover state I went to Bunnings to buy a strop and walked out with a compressor and air tools.

I swear I didn't buy the hoist just 'cos it matches my car...

Some things have happened. I got the final pieces of the puzzle; driveshaft, fly-by-wire pedal, clutch master.

IMAG0172.jpg

I also bought these! (They're in better condition than my photography shows; just a bit tarnished)

IMAG0171.jpg

This is what I've cad'd up for the mounting senario. The red bits are getting laser cut as you read. Clearance with the steering shaft & zorst were the complicating factors. That pipe that sticks out the bottom wont go that low and will have a couple of bends in it before it connects with it's mirror image on the other frame rail.

Also, the flat bit that sticks out the bottom of the red mount will actually be bent to follow the contour of the uprights.

So not a lot of actual work. But that's gonna change this weekend surely!

I've half-done some things:

Chopped some shit out of my cross member to make room for the sump. Wont shut it up until I've finalised engine placement.

IMAG0177-1.jpg

I stitch-welded around the strut towers and stuff:

IMAG0182-1.jpgIMAG0184.jpg

Started making the new cross member. Couldn't finish it be cause the pipe bender I was gonna get wasn't all that. Will have to get one this week. Also my welder isn't powerful enough so I've just tacked them, the steel is 5mm. Can anyone recommend a pro welder person I can get to finish them off? I'll have to do the same for the mounts and trans mount.

IMAG0186.jpg

Everyone who comes and looks at the new lump says "cripes, how're you gonna clean it?" So I made a "soda blaster"

IMAG0188.jpg

It took a bit of fucking about but it mostly worked. The plenum is the worstly corroded bit and the "soda blasting" didn't really help. But no matter, I'm gonna wrinkle paint that anyhow. The rest came up pretty good!

Yay!

I got some stuff back from laser-cutting. These bits make up one mount. Only cost 60 bucks man!

IMAG0194.jpg

Euron8 has taken them and some other bits n bobs along with some very vague/confusing instructions and will weld 'em up for me.

So in the meantime I've been working on the fuel system. Got a Pulsar tank from pick-a-fart for $50 and transferred over the access panel. It comes with nice electrical connectors and stuff.

IMAG0200.jpg

IMAG0203.jpg

IMAG0205.jpg

IMAG0206.jpg

The tank's getting all the pin holes soldered up at a radiator shop.

I'm gonna use the baffle tank in lovely pink from the same tank. Happily it accepts my fuel pump with open arms.

IMAG0207.jpg

IMAG0208.jpg

One thing that confuses me a little about the baffle is it seems quite tricky for fuel to get inside. There's only one wee hole on the top and the sides are quite tall. There are little seams around the place that'll let fuel in though. I'm sure they know what they're doing...

This is the caddy it clips on to. Drilled out the spot welds and welded it to the bottom of my tank. It's surprisingingly tricky to weld blind inside a tank through an access hole not much bigger than your arm. Thankfully no one will see those welds.

IMAG0210.jpg

Then I bent up some 3/8's fuel line. More p-clips to come but this is the setup.

Euron8 made me this sweet bend and tacked up my mounts. Everything came out minty. The isolators are 35mm x 70mm from a Ford something.

IMG_20120701_120945.jpg

IMG_20120701_121221.jpg

I had to notch the back of the pipe to clear the TC mounts.

IMG_20120701_121155.jpg

And this is how everything sits.

IMG_20120701_123922.jpg

IMG_20120701_123833.jpg

Shed loads of room up front!

IMG_20120701_123818.jpg

This morning I whittled up the g-box mount. The two cut-outs are for twin 2.5" exhausts. The hole in the middle is for the one bolt which goes through the stock isolator.

IMG_20120630_190453.jpg

IMG_20120630_190509.jpg

Some baboon (not me!) broke off some casing around the starter so I'll get this cut to fill the void.

IMG_20120616_093208.jpg

ScreenShot2012-07-01at53651pm.png

That's about it. I'll be stoked once the mounts are permanently in the car! But that feels a way off.

I've got some clearance issues with the headers which I've started to cut up so I can put Humpty Dumpty back together again but with more clearance. Those photos are too scary/embarrassing to publish. I think I'll mock them up and take them to TTT Automotive to TIG. Hopefully they don't laugh out loud!

I'm also gonna have to add another uni and hanger bearing to my steering shaft so I can clear everything more comfortably. I don't know what's available for this so I guess I'll have a poke around Pick-A-Part.

Some other happenings:

IMG_20120724_203027.jpg

Crack! Somone's brazed it before so will have to remove that. Note solder too.

IMG_20120724_203036.jpg

Liddle bit a rust in sill, but not as bad as I thought. There's no rust on the inner skin. Should be an easy fix.

IMG_20120724_203056.jpg

Lorra crud but no real rust:

IMG_20120724_203142.jpg

Euron8 did a sweet job of welding my shizz

I painted all my shit with 2pac

IMG_20120820_180501.jpg

Chris did some more weldy weld weld weld. I relocated the fuel reg.

IMG_20120827_210136-1.jpg

I put new brakes together

IMG_20120825_135037.jpg

IMG_20120825_135101.jpg

IMG_20120825_135113.jpg

IMG_20120825_135815.jpg

They're R32 GTR brakes, the rotors are brand new curved-vane Wilwood rotors 296mm x 32mm which I got for a very reasonable price from Pedey.

Last night represents the a turning point in the swap - there's no more stuff to take off the car - from now on I'll only be putting things back on. YAY!

Rust under the drivers side guard is way better than the passengers side, so that's nice.

If things go really well on Satuday I might have everything in primer. (Nothing ever goes that well now thou does it?)

You want update? I giv you update muthabitches!

Shits painted. Everything looks pink but I think/hope it's just my camera being gay.

IMG_20120915_172856.jpg

IMG_20120916_183101.jpg

Fuel/brake/clutch lines (mostly) in. I'm using the 350z clutch master.

IMG_20120926_212838.jpg

Added another steering uni and rose joint to clear the exhaust/mounts

IMG_20120920_220105.jpg

The gearbox came with this relocation bracket which puts the shifter too far back.

IMG_20120917_182013.jpg

So I cut that shaft out between the two uni's and welded the unis together, then made another bracket.

IMG_20120925_211302.jpg

IMG_20120926_212800.jpg

Bought a new airdam

IMG_20120926_150231.jpg

It'll look a little like this

775714f3.jpg

My goal is to have it ready for the Leadfoot cruise on Nov 3rd. I reckon it's touch and go. The plan is to put the engine in for reals tonight, start wiring this weekend. Send driveshaft away to get shortened (recommendations?), put everything back together and then finally drop it off at ttt to get the exhaust made.

Shit it's a lot more fun putting a car back together than pulling it apart! ho ho

Righto, the engine's in and various bits and pieces hooked up.

IMG_20120930_171547.jpg

I now have a shifter again! The position feels pretty good but I may move it a little closer to the floor.

IMG_20120930_171613.jpg

And I swapped the 11.75" rotors for 12.19" ones which means I have a lot more braking area. I will need to make new brakets to locate the caliper 2mm closer to the hub but will run it as is for now.

IMG_20120930_171716.jpg

Next tasks are wiring and put the suspension & steering back together.

So everything's wired up. I've plugged in a cheap OBD thing and can read data from most of the sensors, with the exception of the O2 sensors, there might be something up with those.

The dumb thing is my ODB thing wont give me the DTC codes. So I'm trying to track down a Consult (the Nissan scan tool) If anyone has one you'd be a legend if you could help me out.

I'm 50/50 on whether the ECU will need the immobiliser stuff reflashed. STM in Wellington can do it if I have to. But need to check the DTC codes first.

I reckon there's a 10% chance I'll be ready to roll for hahei. So I made a list and I'll give it a bloody good nudge!

Stuff I need for hahei:

* Get driveshaft made - should be ready by Friday

* Get exhaust made - check with TTT when the can fit it in, hopefully next Friday

* Reflash ecu - STM next weekend?

* Put Windscreen back in, bonnet on - Tuesday

* Fashion MAF housing from drainpipe - Wednesday

* Assemble front suspension and steering - Wednesday & Thursday

* Mount accelerator pedal - Thursday

* Fit radiator - Thursday

* Bleed brakes & clutch, Put oil in diff & gearbox - Thursday

* Reinforce floor around trans mount - Saturday

* Electric radiator fan - anything from pickapart, Saturday

* Assemble axles and drivetrain - Sunday

* Assemble front body - Next Monday & Tuesday

* Get wheel spacers to clear brakes - Got some, just need to get them machined a liddle bit.

* Fix Leak in fuel filler neck - Next Thursday

Shit that can wait:

* Fashion shifter boot

* Fix rust in roof

* Speedo

* Tacho

* Coolant gauge

* Oil pressure gauge

* Fix rust in guards

* Paint airdam

* Mount fuse box and ECU

* Sort out radiator - can probably use stock one for now

I just scored some wheel spacers, new pressure sender and fittings.

IMG_20121024_131501.jpg

I'll need to take the ID of the spacers out and get a locator ring pressed in. Anyone have any city/west auckland recommendations? Speed is what I'm after.

I also just got a call from STM to confirm they're coming around this weekend. So should be all go!
