Rhyscar
hey folks. i'm pretty new to oldschool, been around a few other places people might recognize me from so thought i'd chuck up a thread of where i've got to with my car and see what OS thinks. plan is to keep it road legal so i can still drive it to uni all week, then to the track and home on the weekend. eventual plan is to do targa with the old man. this thing just loves windy roads, almost as much as i do. and thats probably the sole reason i haven't moved on to another car. had this for almost 4 years now. most of the progress has happened in the last year after attending a few track days then started thinking 'shit this is cool!'. have been a uni student studying engineering the whole time i have owned this car so has all been done on a very tight budget and all done myself. this is how it started; 4afe, single pot brakes, shit arse respray, jamex springs (laugh) went through and modded the 4afe a bit and also put koni adj. shocks etc in until i got to the point where i needed to do things properly. so went on a big money spending mission wired in a blacktop with c56 LSD gearbox. added oil cooler and custom extractors to get it a bit better race prepared. oil temps were getting up towards 140deg after track sessions. works nicely with my massive airbox converted to discs all round and big 275mm rotors with twin pot brakes on the front running TRD black pads i scored super cheap. then decided to do it properly with a cage and racetech seats and harnesses. still daily driven and love every minute of it! recently smashed the clutch to pieces at manfield. got a TRD clutch for 30bux and replacing syncro's in gearbox so no more curnchy crunch. hoping to get it all back together this weekend in time to get the suspension a bit better sorted with stiffer springs and HUGE rear swaybar in anticipation of winter series coming up. hoping to do all of the manfield rounds if money permits/nothing goes bang. let me know what you think. hopefully will meet a whole bunch of GC's at nats for mean yarns! Rhyscar
thought i'd chuck a bit of an update up here. ran bearings after clutch etc was back in, got CXGPWR's old engine that is real mint. put that in, drove it for a week, then markku crashed it at manfeild after brake pad fell out. so then changed front panels with some from a cheap as chips levin, repainted it in the garage using crc primer and the cheapest enamel white paint it could buy. turned out kinda shitty (painted it on the night it snowed with waay too many beverages/no masks in us) but thats ok its a gay looking car anyway. haha so now its white. put fibreglass bonnet on with scoop to a. save weight and b. get some cold air going towards the open trumpets. IAT dropped by over 10deg so thats a step in the right direction, but still wanting to make a plenum/airbox to seal off when bonnet is closed. painted it black cause thats the only paint we have. kind of looks better than a whole lot of white i reckon. then put a G3 link on it and did a bit of road tuning. got it pretty good now but still needs to go on the dyno for a final check and power figure (won't be much!) had it at taupo trackday but was kinda disappointed in how it handled differently than before (had changed a few things) so made a few more changes and now its handling awesome. got some mintex pads and stuff to sort out the brakes problem and sorted spring rates. got down to a 1.25.4 at manfield on the CDCC trackday which i was happy with considering it was semi-wet and it still needs a bit more fine tuning. just loving the shit out of daily driving this thing to uni and raping the saddle/H50 on the way back to hawkes bay. Rhyscar
not sure if any more slam is possible (and get it to handle). looks stupid high in pics with std bumper but have a fibreglass one to put on it sitting in the shed which will result in more slam. got other set of 15's on it atm with 195/45's on them which results in road kill being nailed and sticking to the extractors which equals a terrible fuckin smell! plus assorted crossmember grinding as well. oh and btw markku you should google image search 'cock a wheel' i did for lol's. i lol'd. will be seeing you about some $10 diesel sometime soon simon! Truenotch
Well that was mostly disturbing! More slam could be good fun for the next OS type trackday I reckon. Big bars, hard springs and you're away.

Rhyscar
just been to manfeild this weekend. managed a 1.23.1 which i was pretty happy with. still a bit more time left in the car and my driving so plenty left to work on. got a new set of Nitto semi slicks which worked wonders and also got some wilwood brakes. only had street pads for track day which took a while to bed in, polymatrix pads are on their way main reason for upgrading is i got sick of replacing mintex pads. at $300 a pop for the twin pot caliper pads it wasn't very economical when a set of pads only last 1 track day and 2 months of road driving (not that some of my road driving is any easier on brakes than a track day though) wilwood pads are less than $100 and have much better compounds to choose from so long-term this is a better choice. only problem with new brakes is now it requires a re-cert. needs a new wof in feb which i'm not looking foward too. might just have to roll it and get warrants from john. not willing to give up daily driving this yet its too much fun on the twisties but maybe one day i'll take it off the road and make it super-light to do some good times. oh also got a TRD LSD to go in gearbox and working on some big cams for a rebuild next year. will chuck some more pics up from track day when they appear

Rhyscar
keen to aim for being the fastest daily driver at every race meeting from now on! right now all i want to do is be in the racecar music video rendition of heaven is a halfpipe. where infact heaven is a racetrack and erry day we shuffln' (racecars)
Rhyscar
been testing/racing this thing lately. did a test day a week out from R1 of UTRS. did consistent 1.24.1's all day. wanted a bit more speed and the car felt like it was getting slower and slower by the day (was doing epic daily travels to apiti) kqk4I7r42tU tidy up of engine bay so decided with 4 days till the race meeting to pull the head off, change the headgasket and replace head with a ported head with slightly bigger cams in it. turned out to not be as straightfoward as it could have been due to needing to get shims sorted. seems like the valve springs in this head are waay to hard and stretches valves. going to rebuild spare head soon (hopefully before valve snapping occurs) just ended up spending a week getting drunk during the day and working on car. was lol when schoolkids rolled past to see me drunk as fuck on diesel in the middle of the day - there are 2x schools within 100m of my house... diesel torqued head bolts? YES please ...and for LOL's bOWhLlwmRZU oh and there were speedcocks! so all this came together and finally got it on the dyno friday arvo. pulled 100kw atw in 3rd gear. went better than before so happy with that. still blowing quite a bit of smoke, think it needs a new bottom end tbh. rocked out to manfield on sunday and qualified 4th and placed 3rd in my debut race meeting. other races were a bit of a mess up on the handicapping front, giving me a 40sec penalty meaning i never caught the pack although consistent mid 1.23 laptimes. got some work to do on suspension and rear brakes but pretty unkeen to touch anything and make it any faster... don't want to be breaking out of the 1.23 time bracket! just been driving it since then. need to find job so i can afford to build a new engine from scratch. Rhyscar
yeah i did notice... i also noticed you only got 50% in trolling efforts though, missing the drivers side wiper... hah story of my life! C's get degrees!
Dell'orto
1.23's, man thats moving. Should totally turn my one into a race car
Rhyscar
totally should brad! i reckon 1.23's are achievable with a pretty standard car.. i've just gone the long way about it. no cage etc just strip out power windows, radio, dash etc etc then good suspension, good tyres and a mechanical LSD would do the trick - can do all that for under $5k. there has got a standard 101 doing RS cup lapping about 1.34's which i'm sure can be improved on pretty easily just with driving. Vintage Grumble
This car is pretty damn swift for what it is, I remember thinking at wez's track day that it looked to be doing a pretty decent speed. I'm super keen to turn my wagon into a daily racer like this, more so when I found out they are like 150kg lighter than a 101 coupe. Did you ever find out what the slightly tickled up BT was putting out?
Rhyscar
do it! touring car the shit out of it! oh damn that is light. i am kinda lucky as i started with the SJ model (4afe, drum rear end etc) which is 1050kg standard. an estimated guess would say its about 1000kg currently. every time i toil with the idea of lightening the doors (they weigh about 40kg each!) i go through a parking barrier and the joys of electric windows come back to me when that head was in dads car it was putting out a healthy 110kw atw in 4th gear (1:1). if i dynoed mine in 4th it would have got pretty close but the tuner said he would rather tune in 3rd as its easier, 4th gear takes forever to pull out with top of 4th gear being ~190km/h. now he's got some snow-special cams. hasn't been fully tuned yet as had a few electrical issues but last time it was on the dyno it made 117kw atw @7000 coughing and farting. will be revving it out to 9 so should make a bit more power yet. Vintage Grumble
Mmmmmmm 9000rpm, yummy. I'll have to whip my BT out one day and give it new rings/bearings/seals, as it leaks/burns a fair bit of oil. I also think the ecu is playing up, may be a good reason to go to a link, ha. I used to have a GT APEX coupe, and they were said to be near on 1200kg, the wagon is 1040kg (was at the scrappy the other day, so weighed it) So not sure how more doors and glass = lighter? haha.
