MACKAZ
Found a chunk of box section floating around and decided to install it as the rear spreader bar, did the job nice. Finally started fabrication of the body, shown here( in the standard of photographs I seem to take) is the beginnings of the "sills" (for lack of a better word) that will form the base of the body Unfortunately I havent got enought clamps to form the base, so its off to get some more tomorrow... MACKAZ
I got hold of a camera last night and took a couple of pics. The angle irons Im forming at the moment form the base of the body. These get joined onto the cowl, which then gets braced internally so that the steering column and pedals can be mounted (all L200) Anyway... MACKAZ
No pics this time around. Last nights mission was steering column and pedalbox. We squared the cowl up on the chassis and clamped it in place. Did quite a bit of brainstorming, oohing, aahing, disassembly, reassembly, swap this round etc, it appears with a small amount of modification to the column/pedalbox it is going to fit under the cowl nicely, the original tilt still works, and, this is the best part, steering and pedals are 100% OEM unmodified Mitsubishi componentry. The certifier will be impressed.... Once we get this buzzed up we mark where the cowl sits, remove it and brace the snot out of it with 25x25 boxsection, angle iron, and 25x3 flatbar to prevent it from flexing under heavy braking. Well thats the theory anyway.
MACKAZ
Shhiiitttt update time. Still chugging away. Been a whole lot of things pushing this to the backburner last few weeks, but I think Ive got the majority out of the way. We have mounted the steering column, pedalbox and brake booster( we had to cut away the firewall to get it through of course) and are in process of making a tube "mount" to support the bottom of the column. Mounting the booster up there isnt the traditional way but this build is all about simplicity and using OEM parts. Umm what else, yeah, removed the old centre hanger mount. Brothers racecar is taking up a lot of Dads time so yeah, I only do what I can do myself. Im going to do some more grinding on the bodybase tomorrow night (with any luck) so I will keep ya posted
MACKAZ
Done a bit more on the bodybase the Tuesday night, getting prepped to start putting the uprights (body skeleton) on. But......Shit, the farking things all warped out of shape. No biggie, clamp it back down and heat it up with the gas. Have figured on making like a false gas tank thingee to cover the front crossmember, sorta cover it up. Just been hunting google but cant find sample pic, I think it should distract the eye from that horrid crossmember, also looking thru the scrapyard for a "shorter" sway bar and radius rods, if not maybe get them turned and rethreaded. Really keen to shorten up the front, or hide it. Sucks balls, ass, any thing inserted in there applicable. Any ideas to discussion thread appreciated....No not putting a cross sprung front end in it....(as much as I would like to)
MACKAZ
Back into this thing again. Steering column has the tube mount welded to the firewall. Bodybase is finished, after heaps more slivers cut out, hammered to shape, welded, repeat process, now the bodybase pretty well much follows the frame to within 2mm, thinking a rubber isolator between the chassis and body, thats later on. Re centred the engine and box, right hand engine mount is fabricated, and is welded to the chassis, left hand is cut out ready to be welded together. Once the engine ounts are done fabrication of a K member will be the next mission.
MACKAZ
Well fabrication of the left hand engine mount wasnt as easy as the other side! This one had to have a twist made into it to clear the idler arm, and when you put the twist in it stuffs up all the other measurements, dont it??! Anyway thats all I got done tonight, but the engine is now sitting in there without the aid of blocks and rope. A step forward. Now its rustle up some steel to make these 2 K members, one forward, one back, These will also support the floor, which Dad got out of the scrappile today for $9.50 2 mint sheets of 2.5mm panelsheet from a electrical cabinet. MACKAZ
Cowl is now part of the body base(ie one big part)Next part is the uprights for the rest of the tub. Ive setup the windscreen posts to get the dashboard in the right place. Time to add the filler panel and get that tacked in place, ready to brace up the cowl so it doesnt "flex" under application of the brake pedal. Jesus this is sooooo much harder than a repower. MACKAZ
I have scored a 161 out of a 1965 HD Holden. Age of engine more appropriate for the build. going to give it a freshen up and throw it at the chassis later on.

MACKAZ
Currently spewing. I took some photos to post on this update on my cell, but I cant get the stupid thing to synch with my new (to me) PC. Dammit!! Anyway 75x50mm k-members are welded in, top and sides, a few more gussets to be put in place when the chassis gets bowled over later on in the build. Gearbox is also permanently mounted to its freshly built crossmember. So thats a milestone achieved there. Went and saw the GCs at Henwoods Hot Rod Shop and showed them the pics I took. Dave and Tony were more than impressed, going so far as to say that we have over engineered everything to do with the underside. We were concerned regarding the steering shaft angles but they said nothing to worry about judging by the pictures. Now that has been confirmed as being good, work to start up under the cowl reinforcing the steering column and pedalbox. Thats all for now, next time Ill take the bloody camera!!!!! Oh finally got LIGHTING AND POWER in the shed!!!!!
MACKAZ
Pinched my daughters ipod to take a few pics while at Dads tonight for his birthday. Fabbed k members From behind the chassis, no thats not the driveshaft, its a piece of exhaust tube acting as a driveshaft Steering shaft incorporating all important deflection angle in event of frontal collision (part of the cert) Right side engine mount using original Holden mount Hasnt really changed much apart from old boy using it to clean his paint brush
MACKAZ
No pics this time, lanced the tack welds off the cowl and removed it ready to make up the bracing inside the cowl. We did a quick "string line" imaginary mock and found our cowl is all on the piss, needs to be lifted up about 25mm in the front and about 60mm in the back or else the body is going to look like its broken at the front door line. So yeah, there is actually less of it to look at currently....
MACKAZ
Two days ago I managed to drop the sharp windscreen corner of a car bonnet halfway thru my left foot resulting in a 4 hour wait at the ER to get it cleaned up and stitched up. Now off work for a week. Another visit to the docs today because it puffed up reveals its infected and It hurts like hell. Real clever bastard eh? Been relegated to feet up on the couch. Cant even have a beer. DAMMIT
MACKAZ
Took a couple of snaps when around on Wednesday night. Ive cut the rotten bottom off the cowl and lengthened it by 270mm with a 30mm overlap, full weld outside, stitch welded inside.Bent the ends at 90 deg and just cut and bend them to get an approximate height, its got to come down about a 100mm. Now to find the seating position, got some seats to have a look at. Anyway, for your viewing pleasure. Lost pics Left hand side cowl bottom Lost pics Right hand side cowl bottom. These will get pruned back later on. Lost pics Pedalbox and master cylinder bracing Lost pics Attachment plates Lost pics
MACKAZ
Crap update with no pics again. Will sort that out on Thursday. Ok, holdup has been trying to get seat(s) that will go in between the rails. Escort, Mini, old, new, nothing would fit! Anyway was talking to a mate whos mate had an old bus 2 seater bus seat (out of god know what) chilling in his shed. On a gamble one 15 pack of Brenner Blue Lager secured it unseen, and its exactly what is needed. Stoked!!!! Hopefully between now and wednesday Dad will have something come into the yard with useable seat runners that I can use. Wednesday nights mission is to strip the seat and cut off the side off that goes outward, form a new base and weld it on, then start making a floor, fingers crossed. Ive also boxed up and heartily tacked in plates around the drive shaft loop to the original crossmember, Looking good....
MACKAZ
Junk seat I didn't use Next mission is the floor! Milestone number 2.....
MACKAZ
Had a play around yesterday. Dad scored some sheet steel off an industrial electrical switchboard cabinet from the yard. Its clean save for a few drilled holes that I will weld up later. Made a template out of cardboard and traced it out. Cut it out with a zipdisk and dressed it up so its a nice easy fit.. Ill take a picture Wednesday night when I am continuing to make the rear half of the floor and "boot"...
MACKAZ
Front floor. It's made out of the 2mm industrial sheet steel cabinet Tunnel to come soon.
