Found it one night bumming around on trademe for a low $2500 starting bid with no reserve. Warranted, Registered and in daily use. cortinatrademe.jpg

Just so happened to get a phone call from the bank a couple of days before saying that one of my loans I had for work equipment was almost paid off and they would be happy to lend me some more. Hahaha the temptation was too much. I made the bid on the car without even seeing it and waited till I got home from work the next day to find out I had won the auction. Couldn’t believe that with all the ford nuts in New Zealand that none of them we’re interested in it. Was fully expecting to find out that I had been outbid and the price was somewhere up around the $4000-$5000 mark. So within the next few days I sorted out my paperwork with the bank and got the cash to go and pickup the car in St. Mary’s Bay.

Below, The Cortina club at work and its 2 members cars.

DSC00197.jpg

On closer inspection I couldn’t believe my luck. The car wasn’t by all means immaculate but it was reasonably tidy. The paint was shrinking after all those years and there was a few rusty spots. Pretty original apart from the wheels and lowered stance.

Paid the nice guy his $2500, got the keys and started my mk2 adventure. Ran out of gas shortly after....hahaha.

Theres something awesome about driving a car that’s pretty uncommon these days on our roads. Probably everyone on oldskool can probably attest to that. My 120km round trip commute to work was now alot more fun. I drove it every day cos driving it once made me hate my 89 corolla runabout. The shoddy brakes made me pretty nervous though, especially in Auckland traffic.

The only issue I had with it in the first 6 months was with the solenoid. Sometimes it just wouldn’t start for a while. My sisters boyfriend told me that if I bridged the two points that it would give it a kick to start the thing and it worked. Just needed a spare set of hands to turn the key every time it wouldn’t fire. Random people in the street can be so helpful... Had someone look at it and they diagnosed that the solenoid was at fault cos it was receiving enough power. Sourced a replacement off ebay in the uk and had it fixed the following week.

Probably shouldn’t admit to this but what the hell... Was concerned about my brakes and decided to take the front wheels off and have a look at what I was dealing with. Looked all good and as it should’ve been but decided that the brakes would definitely need upgrading. Four Wilwood 4 pots probably and a disc conversion kit for the back end???

Anyway when I was done I chucked the wheels back on and put the car down to tighten up the nuts. That’s when someone distracted me and I ended up driving down the road a short time later with the wheel nuts flying off. Luckily I managed to pull over and stop before the wheel rolled away infront of me. Hahaha What an amateur! No damage done.

My first warrant was now fast approaching and the rusty spots were showing through more and more in the body were starting to worry me. Guy at work had said that there was a guy just down from work who was really lax on giving a WOF so I went to see him. Anything to keep driving it a bit longer! Turns out he had a cortina years ago and was just as much a fan of them as I was. Sweet as dodgy warrant!

Moved closer to town so the cortina was retired from daily use. Made more than a few trips in it over the weekends though to keep me happy. DSC00218.jpg

DSC00214.jpg

Failed it’s next warrant on a bunch of different things. Rust in the firewall somewhere, Engine blowing too much smoke, Non existent rear brakes.. the list goes on. Anyway it was gonna cost too much to get everything fixed and it was money I didn’t have so it was a regretful goodnight for my mk2.

DSC00204.jpg

That was now 3 years ago!!!!!. Fuck it sucks how much of a procrastinator I am. It’s always gonna be a project that gets finished. It’s just a matter of how long its gonna take and how much its gonna cost.

I’ve been overseas and come back with a big thirst to get the Tina rolling again. Engine has completely seized now. I bought a couple of crossflows from a mk2 guy in Welly. Possibly Gaz? Scored some good parts including a flat head, 711M Block, Rally cam and electronic ignition. Just gotta find someone willing to build it as I’m not much of a mechanic. Thats a while off anyway, for now its all about curing the cancer in the body.

Would really like to get the car out of parents crowded shed and into storage where I can do some of the basic bodywork on it but that itself ain’t cheap. Anyone know anywhere cheap where I can do work on it? As you can see my current arrangement is a little cramped

DSC00006.jpg

You can see that below the bumper that someone has painted it with black underseal. Bit wierd.

Just to share....Theres a few places I’ve found through Classic Ford Magazine (UK) that make replacement panels.

http://www.steelpanels.co.uk they make pretty much everything. It’s not cheap though especially when you gotta freight them over here. Its probably worth the money to get it done right.

Interested to hear from anyone who has done this to find out how much it costs.

http://www.smithanddeakin.co.uk Fibreglass panels. Cheaper than steel replacements but harder to fit I guess. Anyone done it?

The frame on the inside of my bonnet is so far gone It’s not funny so I got a fibreglass one made by F.A.R in Gisborne http://www.gisbornespecials.co.nz/fibre ... lacements/ Its probably gonna need pins to hold it down but thats ok.

Had the day off today so what better to do than get all greasy in the sun....

Decided to start pulling the engine out. Engine was smoking quite badly when it was running. Got told it was atleast one of the valve guides :?:

IMG_3981.jpg

Didn't quite get the whole lot out of there!!!. Give it another crack tomorrow.

IMG_3983.jpg

Automatic but not for long. Will keep the auto box however due to them being rare. Might be good if I ever want to sell which to be honest I can't see happening.

The front wings are pretty shot after 3 years sitting. As far as rust goes...I feel the worst is yet to come.

Went and got a $20 angle grinder today in an effort to cut my exhaust out. Learnt the first rule of angle grinding....Keep your mouth shut. hahaha Cut the thing in to 3 pieces and managed to twist the corroded piece of crap out of there.

IMG_3987.jpg

A mate has an engine hoist that I can borrow so gonna hopefully get the engine out tomorrow. So much room in there at the mo

IMG_3990.jpg

Heres my fibreglass bonnet I got made years ago. You can even see a big spot of carbon where I backed up against it. doh!

IMG_3989.jpg

Had a bit of a squizz at the floor today. Doesnt appear to be too bad :) In 1991 Someone had chucked some newspapers down under the carpet to absorb moisture. The thing was so stiff and compacted. Worked though I guess.

Well. Got the engine out finally although it wasn't without a little hiccup. Halfway through hoisting the engine out one of the strops slipped and the engine flopped backwards. Luckily it didnt slam in to the firewall or front panel! Was able to keep it away from hitting shit while dad hoisted it. Heres how it came out....

_MG_4004.jpg

A little unconventional but hey im a self confessed newbie and making mistakes like this is part of the learning and therefore the fun right?

IMG_3993.jpg

At the moment the tina is spending the night outside with the bellhousing rested on a jack to support the weight. Gearbox to come out next!!

_MG_4002.jpg

Progress is good!!!

Looks like Im gonna save some money by not putting the car into storage and just working on it where it is. Spent half the day giving the shed some new carpet instead.

_MG_4018.jpg

The concrete was crumbling away with every sweep so hopefully this will hold it back and keep it a tad more tidy.

Didn't start pulling the gearbox out in the end. Next time.

Got the gearbox and drive shaft out today. Was using a haynes guide which didn't mention anything about the automatic transmission. Wasn't too different though so was able to get it down and out.

IMG_4030.jpg

Was surprised to see that it wasn't a Ford gearbox but a Borg Warner.

IMG_4031.jpg

Im pretty sure it's the original but who the hell would want an automatic cortina anyway?

Itching to get stuck in to these front guards and get them off the car but have been so busy at work I havent had the time. The work has given me the funds for tools and stuff tho. Scored a bunch of cheap air tools off trade me (reciprocating saw, die grinder kit, chisel kit) Also got a 2nd hand air compressor and engine stand too. Think Ive saved a bunch by avoiding places like ripco!

I definitely want to replace both the guards and its either steel panels from the uk at a price or fibreglass panels which are probably not as good. Also from the uk but at a friendlier price. Would like to hear from anyone out there who's done it so I can investigate my options further.

For the rest of the body Im looking at getting a sandblaster and doing it myself. Problem is I dont really know shit about them. I'm thinking I'd need one with a vacuum so Im not burning through alot of sand? Am I right?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =332241862 It ain't cheap but its cheaper than a quote I got to get someone else to do it.

Wouldn't it be nice to have shitloads of cash around to get me rolling in a few weeks! Yeah but that would be cheating. Budget build is the only way to go!!

So i’ve been spending most of my time after work trawling over the internet for various stuff to help with the restoration. Seems I’ve had some success trying to source some replacement guards. Cheers to Craig for putting me in touch with Halliday Racing Developments up north who can make me some new fibreglass ones. :)

Spending some $$$ on various tools etc to get to work on the shell. Would have been nice to get a professional to blast it clean but I can’t afford it. Would rather spend the same amount of money to get what I need to do it myself and have the tools there for the next project...(not that I’m contemplating another at this stage) So until I can afford to buy a vacuum sand blaster I've got a big bottle of paint stripper, some primer and a spray gun coming off trademe to keep me busy.

I had originally planned on buying plans from the UK to get a rollover jig made over here but the guy was abit slack in getting back to me. In the meantime I found this guide for a Mk1 Escort Jig. I'm assuming the Cortina and Escort wouldn't be too different in regard to a pivot point so I think with a few adaptations it will have my tina sitting at 90degrees easy!

This website is awesome. Full of helpful articles and a forum for solely cortina stuff.

http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk

Another helpful resource with a dedicated section for the Cortina.

http://www.classicfordmag.co.uk

The best classic brit ford mag around. They have a wicked new website and forum with more good stuff to gork over.

Looking forward to having a few days off this week to start stripping everything off the body and finding out how much work i’ve got to do . Got to make some more space around the car to work in because it’s only gonna become a bigger issue. Got some hooks and hangers from mitre 10 to take care of some of it. Would really love my own garage right about now...

Stripped most of the stuff from the front of the car and out of the engine bay today. I swear I was there all day but by the end of it, it wasn't that different. So time consuming!. Can't wait to power up the new toys/tools and get these guards off.

Starting to make some progress, well a little atleast.

IMG_4138.jpg

Doesn’t really look like my pride and joy anymore but it’s all for the greater good. Spent the bigger part of a day getting the drivers guard off.

IMG_4140.jpg

Made a few little botch ups along the way like drilling right through the mounting rail a couple of times instead of just through the spot weld  . But by the last half of it I had my technique and patience down. Should be able to do a real tidy job on the passenger side next time.

Was pretty pleased at the state of the A pillar. Will still need a repair but it could have been worse.

IMG_4143.jpg

IMG_4144.jpg

Will also need to do a little repair at the top

IMG_4141.jpg

IMG_4142.jpg

The rest of my week has been spent getting the interior and engine bay clear. Windscreen, bench seat, carpet etc etc is all out but still have alot more to do. Anyone know how the dashboard pad comes off? Don’t want to make a mess of it as it’s in pretty good nick.

Went to Trade and Industrial Supplies and got a vacuum sandblaster as a christmas present to myself. Will probably have to upgrade my air compressor to run it unfortunately.

Oh well..This summer is set to be a busy one that’s for sure...

Another little update. Managed to make a better job of drilling through the guard along the top mounting rail.

IMG_4183.jpg

Discovered that the trick is to look for the join where the two bits of metal join together distinguishable by in my case a reddish ring in the drill hole. Patience I found is pretty important.

IMG_4186.jpg

The bottom of the guard nearest the passenger door had been pushed out somehow. This should have been sitting flush with the sill.

IMG_4187.jpg

Don’t know why they put these foam bits up inside the guard near the top of the pillar. All they seem to do is trap dirt and moisture and cause all sorts of rot.

IMG_4196.jpg

Think I might adapt some of those black inner wheel arch things on modern vehicles to fit to do a better job. New fibreglass guards will be bolt on eventually.

Inner wheel arch and pillar is pretty damn good. Left hand headlight bowl is another story. Will have to add this to the list for weld repairs.

IMG_4193.jpg

IMG_4190.jpg

IMG_4200.jpg

Next up is to take to the remaining metal from the guards with a die grinder. Tidy that up. Purchase a bigger better compressor to power my blaster. Get it etched and in a somewhat more respectable state by the end of summer. As she is at the moment.

Progress it seems has come to a halt. Had a good summer break managing to spend too much money that would have otherwise been thrown at the tina. Work is gonna be slow for the next few months so I’ve decided to play it safe. Stupid fickle NZ film and tv industry...

_MG_4344.jpg

Now Im just concentrating on the little things or the stuff that ain’t gonna empty the wallet.

Kinda need to wait a while anyway. Need a good couple of grand to get the body up to scratch and then theres the paint which probably should all be done around the same time.

Roof headlining before was immaculate

IMG_4231.jpg

and after. Sound insulation cracks me up. What the hell was that gonna do??

IMG_4232.jpg

All this jelly crap came out of the fuel tank when I emptied it. A byproduct of sitting for 3 years doing FA

IMG_4335.jpg

Forgot that I did some basic rust removal in the boot just after I got it. Probably helped save me from having a bigger job this time around.

_MG_4346.jpg

The rust I found around the boot seal is a bit worrying. Its like this around the whole boot opening. Another design flaw for these cars. Moisture that makes it down in to this rail has absolutely no way of flowing out! Will consider making a slight modification to route water out and down the back panel.

IMG_4348.jpg

Pretty happy with the state of the floorpans. Will need some patches but when compared to the state of some Cortinas that are under restoration in the UK. This is mint.

IMG_4352.jpg

IMG_4356.jpg

Found more cancer underneath the dash on the firewall. The other side is the same

IMG_4354.jpg

Hopefully wont be too long before the next update!

The more I think about it (and thats alot) the more I find that theres stacks of things to do when cash reserves are low. Maybe Im just a chronic procrastinator. It sucks however to have motivation at an all time high and funds at a low.

Yesterday it was 3 years since I first got her. In celebration I decided to invade my folks 2 car garage, jack it up and attack the underseal. Really happy with the state of the underside. I removed a large plastic bag full of seal, grime and shit and only found one small patch of rust!! Even that rust had come through from the inside.

IMG_4400.jpg

I would have appreciated having a rollover jig at this point but theres only so much whining I can do about money. I still plan on getting one made and have gone to the trouble of adapting some free plans for an escort jig I found at http://www.neilfletcherracing.co.uk/the_spit.htm

I wanted to get some dry ice to hammer shatter the underseal off but it's the long weekend, BOC probably wasn’t open and I just wanted to get stuck in.

FYI. BOC sells dry ice for $5.85+GST p/kg. You’ve got to buy a minimum of atleast 1kg and it pays to ring them up so they know your coming. They recommend one of those polystyring chilly bins to transport it in. Cheap as chips way of making progress.

I ended up using my air hammer chisel to get the stuff off. At a fairly low speed it worked a treat, just got to be careful not to put the corner of the chisel through the floor or catch it on the floor contours. Also be careful not to hit seams on the 90. Still got probably half a cars worth of stuff to take off so will get some dry ice for the rest of it and see how it goes.

Finished off removing the underseal today. Went and picked up some dry ice to see if it worked any better. Waste of time if you ask me. Air chisel did it all with no hassle. Took off about 3 plastic bags of the stuff over 3 days.

From this

IMG_4200.jpg

To this

IMG_0011.jpg

I didn’t get it all but what I left behind the blaster will get.

IMG_0022.jpg

This manufacturing tag fell out from up in the roof around the windscreen. Dont know why it was there of all places, vibrations must have shaken it loose. Good find nonetheless. Just don’t understand why it says 63 under schedule number???

IMG_0016.jpg

Check my rusty drums. haha I want 9 inch capri/GT replacements or a disc conversion. Money money money.

IMG_0023.jpg

Was originally thinking minilites but the more I look at these cheviots the more I like em. And the more I see they need some work...

Ok. Here is a design for a rollover/rotisserie I've come up with after looking at a few different pics etc. Havent got many ideas for the locking mechanism yet (your thoughts are welcome). Im pretty sold on using the hydraulic rams as it seems the easiest way of getting both ends of the car up and able to be rolled over without hitting the ground.

CarRotisserieMockup.jpg

Save barn has some hydraulic rams for cheap. $55 each i think so might get a couple of them. Any welder types out there have any idea what I should expect to pay someone to make this? Taking in to account the materials minus the rams plus labour?

Also found out the other day where I can get replacement lengths of the boot seal rails in NZ. Rarespares has them. part no. RP2033.

wow the last post was really that long ago...

Havent really been doing much work at all on the Tina so best call this a crapdate rather than an update.

Been working lots and havent had much time for anything. Spending money on it still which is something I guess. In the past couple of months I've managed to get myself some new kyb shocks, some m16 calipers to recondition. a bunch of various tools and a whole lot of other random shit to make myself a blasting cabinet. Stitched together a window for it the other day in true rough as guts style. 8)

IMG_4521.jpg

And before someone points out that its not a very effective window I should point out that its plexiglass with paper stuck to the outside

Have a 200L drum for it to go into. still looking around for a cheap dustbuster or something I can use to suck all the crap out of the air inside it.

Heres a couple of pics from all ford day a couple of weeks back. This car had me stoked cos its kinda where im headed with mine. Just maybe a little lower... :bounce:

IMG_4479.jpg

IMG_4481.jpg

This is all for now. Half the year is almost gone and I've barely begun. Busy times ahead if Im gonna have it on road again for summer.

Pushed on with my blast cabinet this week. Had the idea of making it myself to save money and found a couple of good build threads for inspiration. Got a bit carried away with it as you’ll see and probably ended up spending what I would have paid to get one off tardfactory.

IMG_4541.jpg

IMG_4542.jpg

IMG_4543.jpg

Still got plenty to do to finish it but have most of the bits and pieces ready to go.

IMG_4546.jpg

Dont ask me why I chose that yellow. I kinda like it now though. The window is just sitting in it for wow thrills. Will fix it in place next and seal the thing up and it will be good to go minus a light and extraction. Im thinking one of those LED tube light things and a hand vacuum.

Also had a good chat to a sheet metal fabricator type and he’s gonna make me a rotisserie thing when I’ve got the cash. Yeah its been a long time coming but...cool cool.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well. Some further developments with the Cortina Resto. Had a mission of a day on wednesday picking up a parts car from Napier. What a day of drama. You know how theres people who when they have a bad day, it seems like its just one hiccup after another? Well I am apparently, one of those people.

It’s a long story but here goes...

I’ve been in the hunt for some front guards for ages. It was looking like I would go fibreglass but then an auction popped up on trademe. Auction was for 2 cars, An aussie 2 door and some variant of the 4 door. As part of the sale was a GT dash with gauges and some spare guards so I was really keen. The guy wouldn’t break up the auction so it seemed I would have to make 2 trips down from Aucks to recover the whole lot.

I arranged to borrow my dads ute to tow a hired trailer. Picked up the trailer and rigged it to my 1.5 laser to travel it down to swap it over to dads ute. Made it to my folks, the laser was a little champion. By now I was already behind schedule and the battery in dads ute just decided to give up. Grabbed tools and jumped the ute to travel with trailer and buy and fit a new battery on the way. I don’t know what repco has against me but every time I go there I always walk away with the wrong item. No matter what info I supply them with. After hooking up the battery I find the battery is shorter than the previous one and the nuts on the brace were bottoming out so not doing a good job of holding the battery. Short time later I have the correct battery in place and me and dad are back on the road.

The next few hours passed without problem. Apart from dad leaving his sunnies behind in at a Shell station. Someone left the bathroom there possibly looking a little cooler than before.

We had planned on stopping in Taupo for some food and refuelling. Came across a new road that allows you to bypass Taupo and get straight on the Napier Highway. Thought it would be a great idea to take it and make up some time. Would just have to stop somewhere along the way for eats and gas. Turns out there are absolutely no gas stations for the 100 odd kilometers between Taupo and Napier....

So the ute is towing a pretty heavy trailer over some of the hilliest sections of road in NZ....

So me and dad start stressing about getting stuck on a hill in the middle of nowhere. Dad jokes the ‘F’ on the fuel gauge stands for F*&k all and the ‘E’ for ‘Enough’. Cue nervous laughter.

So we start heading up this big ass hill and the engine starts sputtering. Manage to pull in to this little gravel section, get out and start making myself look more presentable in order to pull a ride to Napier. 5mins later (I must scrub up all right) A South African lady offers me a ride. Dad stays with the car. After about ten minutes of typical hitchhiking small talk we come across a policeman giving some poor bastard a ticket. Now, I think It’s about as easy to feel ill of the NZ police as it is for them to feel ill of the rest of us so Im a bit worried that this guy is gonna talk to me like Im some kind of dipshit. It turns out this cop is actually a nice guy and hasn’t put up with enough bull shit yet to abandon treating all people like scum. He says that theres a cafe 15ks back with emergency fuel supply and gives me a lift there.

My conversation with the lady at the cafe goes something like this

ME - ‘Im out of gas’

CAFE LADY - ‘We have a 10L tank’

ME - ‘Great’

CAFE LADY - ‘That will be $55’

ME - ‘Wow. That’s like $5.50 a litre’

CAFE LADY - ‘Yes it is....’

ME - ‘I’ll take it’

So the cop gives me a lift back to Dad and the Ute and away we go again. Make it in to a gas station in Napier around 6pm. Its already dark and getting damn cold. The winch cable on the hire trailer is barely long enough to attach to the car at the base of the ramp. We try anyway and the cable flys off the the winch because its been unraveled too far. Luckily we had a chain with us to extend it. We rethread the winch cable on using an ipod as a torch. Its not ideal but we obviously hadn’t planned on being this late. Dad isn’t happy that the car will stay on the trailer so tells me to go buy a proper torch so we can have a better look at what we’ve done. I do a dash to the warehouse right on closing time and $40 later I have a torch that helps us establish that the car aint going anywhere that the trailer isn’t and I didn’t need to spend $40 on a stupid torch. hahaha.

That was the end of the drama and we got the 2 door and stuff home somewhere around 1am. Was meant to do another trip today for the 2nd car but it was all too expensive the first time. I got the guards, dash and all I wanted on the first trip so I pulled the plug on round 2. The guy I bought them off was cool enough not to worry about me not going through completely with the deal. He probably shouldn’t be anyway as he gets to sell a car that he already sold and make a bit more cash. If anyone is keen on a four door shell pm me and I can put you in touch.

Heres the aussie built 2 door. (only good enough for parts on a kiwi 4 door ofcourse) Actually its totally nailed and wouldn’t be good enough for anything. Think Im just gonna strip it down of everything usable and then send it to the scrapyard in the sky.

DSC00658.jpg

The dog didn’t hesitate making herself at home.

DSC00661.jpg

Dont know this Cortina’s history but I know that it met with the last of its roadgoing days about the same time it met with something else. What a shame.

DSC00662.jpg

This is the GTE Dash. Wood panel is broken in about 4 places. Gonna make a template from it and get something native to make a new one.

DSC00665.jpg

DSC00667.jpg

Gauges are good. Thats why my thumb is up.

Could do with a little clean. Im missing a hubcap off one wheel. Its got me thinking about widened steels and whitewalls.

DSC00668.jpg

Managed to have a good clean out of the shed but it doesnt really show.

DSC00669.jpg

So much stuff in there. I wont be breaking the bank again until I can afford to get another house that has atleast a double garage. Living in an apartment 50ks away from any kind of work I could do is a serious killer of progress.

Boring pictureless update. Its amazing the amount of interest you get from having a Cortina parked up in a paddock in view from the road. I ended up selling the aussie 2 door as I’ve got the parts I needed and dad would spew if it was there for much longer. Having the 4 door in his shed is bad enough but hopefully thats not for much longer. Moving out west as soon as I can afford it to some place with a nice double garage. I cant wait.

Just been doing a whole lot of networking of late. With the interest in the 2 door, its been great just talking to people about parts etc. Bought some refurb’ed 9 inch GT drums for the rear recently with some backing plates coming from a guy I sold my mk1 failure of a project to years ago.

Been doing alot of thinking about paint. (Its hard not to think lots about it when the car is so far away) I’ve always been a fan of ermine white. But now semi interested in some kind of peppermint green (maybe like those snifter lollies they used to sell) . Possibly with a stripe down the lines on either side but without continuing on to the rear panel like the lotus colors did. Smoothed bumpers to go with it a la hot rod style would also be cool.Tell me your thoughts.

Saw the shed of the guy I sold the 2 door to. He’s a collector and has a whole bunch of low mileage factory condition cars. Think there was about 4 mk2 eskys including a couple of sports, 2 german mk3 capris, Mk3, 4 & 5 cortinas. All spotlessly clean and concours condition. It was unbelievable. He also had a Boss 260 BA Falcon that he bought new and just put away. Never driven. Still had the new car smell on the inside. Was amazing and pretty inspiring to say the least.
