hell yeah - my first car was a 1000cc one, I thought I was going to see pistons pop through the bonnet at 100kph in 2nd gear... and the bloody thing was wanting more! In fact the 1000cc (& later 1100cc Punto) FIRE (Fully Intergrated Robotised Engine - supposedly 1st engine 100% built by Robots) were designed by Kawasaki and also found in some of their cruiser bikes.

really? They still actually seem to be decendants of the lampredi engines when you look at them I think at the very least few of the valvetrain components may still be the same, valvesprings, buckets and shims etc. still direct valve actuation design so somewhat similar combustion chamber to the old SOHC motors but with crossflow instead.

I think it depends on which motor you are looking at, the sting motors (903cc I think), 1100 and 1300 motors in the early Uno's were quite an old design whereas I was lead to beleive that the FIRE motors (1000cc in early Uno, 1142cc?? in later uno and punto were new in late 80's). Regardless was good fun - 50mpg, managed to get it to 157kph one day, was pissed not to make the ton but rode in one owned by the local dealer that had a few tweaks and would do 170! Stiffer rear shocks (from the turbo) made the handling way better!

No I meant the FIRE motors, not the pushrod 903 or SOHC lampredi 1.1 and 1.3

Wow, nice one. That looks like a great example too. Ive had 3 of these over the years.

The OE turbo is rubbish, it will fail if you turn the boost up. They usually fail at standard boost after 100k or so also. The injection system will supply enough fuel for over 160HP if its in good condition.

Turbo seems ok at the moment. Will probably look at replacing it something ball bearing for max spool/lol.

This thing now has a sweet dint in the door from a motorbike falling on it. That's the only change I've made. It lives in the garage. Gets started every few months. Eventually I'll get some new shocks for it as the rear ones are leaking. Still needs a bit more of a tidy up but can't see it happening for a while tbh.

Cleaned it for the first time in a couple years. Found a little rust on the left door under the sill.

Mate is heading over to S.A end of the year so he's going to price up some parts as they are plentiful over there as they kept producing them until... 1998? Or something.

New stuff list so far:

Badges

Various interior trim bits, electric window switch surrounds etc, new matts? Maybe new carpet if I'm lucky.

New OEM shocks (have decided to keep this car as stock as possible)

Price a new turbo, clutch kit, master and slave cylinders

Wondering what else I should try and get my hands on?

Shipping is going to be the worst bit so figure I'll try and get it all sent in one lot.

There's nothing it really needs mechanically that I know of, but wondering how hard things like CV's etc are going to be to get hold of in future. Got a new engine gasket set off trademe for $29, score. Again, just building spare for a rainy day at this stage.

rear hubs/wheelbearings are a bit tricky to get. being a mark 2 the gearbox is the same/very similar to tipos I think, so not too bad to get bits for - so hopefully cvs are similar. there are a few specialists who are pretty good and can get most stuff without too much trouble, euroitalian and italian autos in auckland, dino enterprises in cambridge thomson motors in te awamutu. usually new parts from those guys are pretty good value, but sometimes if its stuff thats only available 2nd hand and not new then you get can get reamed on occasion. i.e. I had to pay $250 for a headlight on my lancia, was pretty pissed but I needed it so didn't have an option :(
