re-registering a vehicle

info thread for re-registering vehicles (maybe sticky somewhere?)...

[*:2jyhil48]LTSA Factsheet 9 - Reregistering your vehicle
[*:2jyhil48]Vehicle inspection requirements manual - In-service certification
also just emailing LTSA to find out about a checklist

I just had my fiat 128 revinned on Wednesday. It had no papers and I kept the black plates.

If you have no papers you need to pick up a statutory declaration form from VTNZ or here

http://www.justice.govt.nz/tribunals/trans-tasman-occupations-tribunal/documents/TTO%200609%202.pdf

you take it to the citizens advice and get a JP to witness you signing it- I took a copy of the trademe add and a note from the seller stating there were no papers and the chassis number and old plate number. Cost Free

to keep the black plates Email Tania.Taite@nzta.govt.nz

she is the one that handles the black plate issues. You need to supply a pic of both the plates to show they are in good condition. She searches the data base to make sure the plates are on it and sends you a email with a reference number and a phone number that you hand over at the testing station.

The Black plate issue seems to be a well hidden secret because the testing station had never had anyone or heard of anyone keeping their plates.

But once they called Tania instant approval - and remember that keeping ya black plates knocks $19.95 off the revinning price

I hope this helps some one

P.S> stay away from Sylvia park VTNZ for revinning I have a 1 inch dent in my front valance and had to get a cert for it. The Cert inspector called the VTNZ guy a total F#%kwit .

good idea with the new thread.

can anybody offer advice for my situation:

I bought my car and wrote up a contract, no change of ownership papers as it is not registered. the guy i bought it off was obviously the previous owner but he is not the registered owner.

1) i cannot turn in the plates as i am not the registered owner.

2) i need to show proof of how the car has come into my possession from the last registered owner in order to reregister the car

- is there anyway i can turn in the plates on behalf?

- can i go to the post office, find out the registered owner, and basically ask him to sign the car over to me, so i don’t have to make a paper trail of all the people who have owned in between me and the last registered owner?

Things must have changed a bit since i got my Escort re-vined.

I just got the brakes flushed and bled like i was told you have to, and i just drove in to VTNZ, i didn't even know the old plate number or who the old owner was!

An hour and about $400 later i drove home with new plates, wof/reg and a list of things that i "might want to fix before the next wof" -rust in the floor, broken engine mount etc etc lol

Note: Until the reregistration and relicensing process is complete, a vehicle can’t be driven on the road: it must be towed or transported by another means.

Thats pretty annoying, towing a vehicle thats perfectly capable of driving under its own power.

I didn't know that, i drove to pit stop and to VTNZ (among other places lol) before mine was done

Was pulled over on the way to VTNZ and explained to the cop why i had no plates etc and he just followed me down to the testing station and left

i've finially gotten some straight answers after ringing heaps and heaps of people.

silvia park vtnz will do a re-reg for cars previously registerd in nz and older than 1991 for $180.

you need to show proof of purchase with copy of yours and the previousl owner's driver licence. also proof that it has previously been registered in nz.

the test is like a wof, but a bit harder on structural and rust repairs and if they find that there has been some you will need to get an engineers report for it.

if you fail you get 20 days to bring it back.

The car I'm getting's plates aren't even coming up on VTNZ system, so I have to get a whole bunch of documentation (previous ownership papers and all manner of other evidence) as proof that it was registered on the road in NZ.

The slightly more disturbing part is that despite it not coming up on VTNZ's system, plates.co.nz also notes that the plate is unavailable. :?

So, although I was hoping to retain the original 60's black plates, I might not have a choice. Which would just mean it would be personalised plate time, I guess.

hmmm... slightly off topic, but the 84 golf i just bought, all registered etc etc, put it on hold fine yeah, but theres no VIN plate in the engine bay, or on the car anywhere it seems, after a thorough lookover :\ the Change Of Ownership papers i got in the mail have the vin# on it, but yuh no plate? whats the process with that? can you get another plate stamped up and slapped on, or is it a more lengthy process than that involving paperwork etc?

Not all cars have a modern VIN plate. It's likely the VIN number listed on the papers, is the cars chassis number which should be stamped into the steel somewhere, generally on a car it's on the firewall though it can be on the radiator support panel or on the dash steel, visible through the window or on a van they're sometimes in the door shut or under the seat cover for the engine.

No VIN but is there a model/build plate?

no model or build plate, i've read that the golfs usually have a build sticker stuck in the spare wheel well, nothing there, it usually has VIN, and all model codes and extras codes for the car :(

i guess since its registered i dont need to worry too much about a vin plate? wof places will just take plate# down and not worry about the vin yeah?
