Have you considered Plasti-dip or equivalent? Paint them matty B, but (in theory) reversible if you get bored

Im a big "fuck black wheels they look shit" kinda person, really hate the trend of it in modern cars, they just end up getting lost in arches and the silver looks so good, but at the end of the day, as others have said, chase your own dopamine and do what feels good to you. Lifes too short to do things just to satisfy other weirdos on the internet.

I may have done some investigation ;-)

I think you're lying. Everything you do is for our approval. Or at least it should be.

If I wanted your approval I would just swallow everytime.

So special me got to drive this thing yesterday. First thing I did was accidentally test the lack of rev limiter because someone has not yet fitted the guard over the accelerator linkage that runs behind the clutch pedal.

I have never seen such a frantic fast moving Dylan before.

Its loud and pretty quick. The steering is lovely. Brakes feel similar to the imps with no servo assistance so you have to actually push the pedal, not just breathe on it.

Looking forward to seeing how the lightweight Busso V6 conversion goes. Damn that's going to be a weapon and sound amazing!!!

The accelerator linkage issue you raised is actually a feature for achieving high idle during warmup. And also the guard does not exist.

And if I swapped it out for anything it would be a bike engine, but as it is essentially already perfect I would only do this if it blew up.....

Can I borrow it for an afternoon please?

Trust me, if it is going to blow up because of abuse then my general use/abuse will have more deleterious effect than one afternoon with you.

Fortunately both you and the X take it like a champ.

The one situation where I might consider this is if the Imp beats the X in a drag race, then there might be some developmental improvements....

And if I am going to go to throttle bodies and engine management then a wee spooly thing may as well get thrown into the mix :-)

Keep an eye open for 2L Lancia engines. You know what they go like. You've seen the Chapman's ones.

I know a man just up the road who has a stash of these, but if I was going to bother with a re-engine I would definitely go for a bike engine, something like;

More power, less weight, more revs. Its not like it is a commuter :-)

Edit; although probably a water cooled something given the engine position.

While I was briefly an X1/9 owner I came across a guy who was mostly a Morris Minor specialist but also was developing a thing for X1/9s and Lancia MonteCarlos. He was also based 10ks from the official last resting place of all the Lancias culled in the great front subframe rust recall. Officially they were all crushed whole. Unofficially quite a few of the 2L TC power-trains tunnelled under the wire and ended up in grass trackers and….. one of this fellas X1/9s. I did have a close look at it - was a bit of a coat-hangers and zip tie death-trap special.  Apparently it was very brisk…. Can’t say I felt the urge to try it at the time, but done right it would be a proper weapon.

Have a look at the BMW k1200 4 cylinder bike engines.

They have a separate gearbox and are easy to adapt. Strong reliable compact engines The 16v model has 120-130bhp stock?

A wealthy couple here run a pair of Abarth X1/9 replicas in Classic racing. Dennis and Debbie Chapman. They do well and the group around them in Christchurch who also own X1/9's have benefited from the parts liberated when the conversions were done. Pic for your info.

Not sure but they may now have three of them.

Yea I have been around ruapuna in one, it was epic.

Plus they tried to liberate my car for its shell, I politely declined.

I did look but the format didnt look super promising, mostly because the motor sits flat. They are way cheaper than most 1200's tho.

This might be becoming more relevant as a 'noise' has developed. It might not be serious but I need to investigate the various bearings in the ancillaries before getting too worried. And TBH its probably easier to just fix it even if it means the engine out.
