mk2_escort Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 ok so i took my front disk rotors (mk2 escort) into a workshop around the corner from work to get machined, and the guy said that they are getting to thin to even bother. ok thats fine, get new ones? nope, no one makes them. second hand? yes, but to find anything decent is going to be a big mission. i know that there are aftermarket disks out there, but they are mostly ventilated - to thick for the callipers. so my question to everyone, what should i do? 1. keep searching for second hand standard disks untill i find something with plenty of meat on it? 2. find an alternative disk of some other car (here is where you guys come in) 3. spend a fair bit a coin and get some aftermarket disks, and in-turn bigger callipers to go with (AP 4 pots or willwood or something like that. perhaps even some princess calliper but they dont come by very often and its probably not worth it, and going AP callipers anyway.) the car is being built with nothing but performance in mind, but at the moment i am just trying to get it on the road. i was just going to get the disks maching and new brake pads etc etc. at the moment the brakes are hopeless, and i do have track useage in mind, aswell as i intend on doing some club motorsport with the car. any help is much appreciated. cheers guys Quote
peteretep Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 did you actually ask anyone if they sold new disks? im 90% sure repco etc would still sell them Quote
mk2_escort Posted October 28, 2007 Author Posted October 28, 2007 i didnt, the guy did. i know him, the place he works at gets a lot of tyres through my work. he said he rang the ford dealers etc and couldnt find anything. said they didnt even have a listing for mk2 escort or something. even tho i got new ball joints and other stuff through them. maybe i should ring them up myself Quote
peteretep Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 yeah dont go through ford, anything they had would have been old stock and you were just lucky to get it. Ring up repco etc and theyll have them. Around $70 a disk I think Quote
Raizer Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 BNT like $40 trade each for new Brembo's Edit: Part number: 08.2275.10 -Ford -Hyundai Quote
Gaz Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Or capri vented from here. http://palmside.co.nz/parts.asp?make=FO ... ory=BRAKES Quote
sholdowa Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 you'd need to get spacers for the calipers as well if you're going vented. Quote
mkcortina Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 you can buy DBA disc's http://www.dba.com.au/2006/PDF_CATALOGUE/Catalogue_AUST/2007_AUSTCatalogue_180607.pdf Part number DBA118 or DBA118SL and DBA118SR for slotted 1's repco or super cheap should beable to order them. Super cheap was alot cheaper than repco when i got my cortina 1's a couple of years ago. or you could ring 0800 brakes and order from them. http://www.racebrakes.co.nz/ they should be less than $100 each. Unclejake Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 A couple of months ago there were none in the country and BNT's buy price had gone from $25 to $72 (or something like that) ex. China and they were not going to bring any more in. We bought the last one that Repco had in stock nationwide. I don't have any clues as to what to do mate - but it is a serious problem ATM. Quote
QCADTA Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Ill have a spare set when i change to bigger vented rotors. Will have a look to check condition but from memory they looked good. Quote
OSC Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i have a spare set of standy ones as i have just upgraded to princess calipers and capri vented disks. when i rung around it seemed easy to get standy escort discs i think capri non vented fit too i think Quote
Gaz Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 If repco etc cant get you some I can prob still find you a set. Hit me up if you need. Quote
mk2_escort Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 ok well iv rung around the place and repco can get them, and yes there is none in the country at the moment. there are 4 coming from australia but the guy said it could be a week, could be a month before they get here. can you guys elaborate on the aftermarket rotors? also how is it possible to fit ventilated rotors in standard callipers with spacers? please explain this one to me. it does sound like a good idea tho. Quote
mk2_escort Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 oh yea, forgot to mention, Ford cant get anything, and BNT also cant get anything. looks like its either repco or something aftermarket. i dont want to have to wait for more then a month or so because i want to get me knew struts in so i can move the car etc... eke_zetec_RWD Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 up grade, cost fuk all more. i used bmw 320 fr discs and princess calipers, discs were 40 sumfing each new, calipers i found. improvement was huge! Quote
sholdowa Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 also how is it possible to fit ventilated rotors in standard callipers with spacers? please explain this one to me. it does sound like a good idea tho. The calipers themselves are made in 2 halves. To rebuild them, split them and replace pistons/seals/clean out etc. To convert to run on vented disks, get a spacer from palmside, etc which will allow for the extra width of the vented disk, and bolt the two halves back through that. I'm not a huge fan of the austin princess brakes, as they are really heavy, and this all adds to the unsprung weight of the wheel. I hear, but have never tried, that there are some volvo 4 pots that also fit with little persuasion which are commonly used over the ditch. Personally, I'm using the standard 2 pots with a spacer and mintex pads on 2.8i capri venteds. I'll let you know what they're like when it moves again Quote
V8Pete Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Have you tried http://www.ebcbrakes.co.nz ? They seem to stock a lot of weird shit. Probably expensive though. Quote

Quote
sholdowa Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 No, Palmside is never the answer... they take all your money and give you shiny things in return! Seriously, yes that's what you're after. If M16's on venteds with some decent pads aren't good enough for you, then upgrade and you'll have no problem selling that kit. But it's a lot cheaper to take that route than replace everything with much bigger stuff. Just make sure that the BDA, Quaiffe gearbox, etc doesn't follow you home at the same time. Quote
Unclejake Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 ^ concur regards Palmside. They certainly are not bad to deal with but they also are not the cheapest. If you are looking at upgrades please also consider Les Hunter from Christchurch. He races and Escort and knows his way around them very well. http://www.leshunterauto.com/home.htm Quote
