sheepers
i borrowed some 1" wide spacers to see if i could get away with wider wheels on the back. the answer is "yes i can!" with the springs removed and the car sitting on the bumps the inside wheel rubs, i can still turn the wheel by hand so its not much, with the addition of an adjustable panhard rod and the tyres being on a slightly wider rim it will give me enough clearance between the tyre and the guard. the plan is to get some 1" wider outer shells for my rear wheels. go the dish. this will give me 15 x 9 rears with 0 offset. ill be running 205 50 15's on the back (this is the widest they make my chosen tyre in). it will be tight but so, so worth it. sheepers. sheepers
got a new drive shaft made. it required a different centre bearing so i had to make new mounts on the floor for the new bearing. while i was at it i made the hump in the trans tunnel a bit higher because the diff used to hit the floor during large road hole/bump type shit. its the bit under the back seat so ill cut a bit out of the seat to clear it. also put a new set of plugs in it (first set in 6 years) and its feeling a bit healthier but its still got a bit of a miss under full boost. will have to look into this further. ive found a bloke who can provide me with the 1" wider outer shells for my rear wheels. 250$ each and 6 weeks. im pretty keen to get these so ill sort this out next week i reckon. ive finished work for the year so nest week is going to be all about getting the car straight again. sheepers. sheepers
well. the car is back to looking straight and true. its all painted and back together. ill get some pics tomorrow at the classic Jap meet. my diff is completely fucked, the center Carrier has about 10 degrees of play on the axles, no idea whats caused this but the only way to fix it is full re-build. I'm in debt up to my (eye)balls at the mo so don't ask me how the fuck I'm going to pay for this but it has to be done. and soon. so no new wheel shells or tints for me........ good to have the car straight and looking good though. will post some pics after Jap meet/Kumeu. sheepers. sheepers
went to a freinds wedding on the weekend. i had the Honor of driving the groom to his doom. total round trip of 320K's. averaged 7.5L per 100 for the trip which i think is pretty fucking good. it was such a good trip. both trips, down and back up, were a little bit cloudy so it wasn't to hot, the roads were pretty empty and we just cruised, all 4 windows down rollin like dice. sweet. I'm racing at Taupo this Friday. ill leave on Thursday night and drive down straight from work, race Friday then drive back on Saturday. ive ordered some T3 camber tops and if I'm lucky they will arrive in time to put them in. i reckon with a bit more camber on the outside wheel i could get round the track a bit quicker. i hope to find out........... sheepers. Popular Post sheepers
after many many years in storage while i built my crown and stuffed about with the V8 ive finally done some work on this thing. whats been done? new flywheel, 10" clutch and hydraulic throw out bearing. convert from steering box to power rack and pinion. Link G4+ ECU install. engine bay de-loom.  so as usual i dont have many pictures because i just dont think of it at the time but i do have a few.  so the power steering. its AE86 and i use AE86 power rack, crossmember LCA's and radius arms. to mount the crossmember you need to cut the ends off it and re-drill the mounting holes. you can also make spacers and drop it down by 40mm. some people dont do this and mount the AE86 crossmember straight to the bottom of the celica chassis rail. you can do this but it raises the steering and engine up quite a bit. the steering is no issue but raising the motor by around 40mm is more than im comfortable with.  to re-drill the AE crossmember is quite a tricky process. what i did is to clamp the celica crossmember upside down on top of the AE crossmember. then i clamped straight edges to the mounting points for the LCA's on both crossmembers and aligned them. once you have them aligned you have effectively made sure the LCA mounting points are exactly the same on both crossmembers. then transfer the holes through from the celica crossmember to the AE. side note, when you space the AE crossmember down you need to put crush tubes for the bolts to go through into the spacer. its very hard to get the holes aligned exactly so what i do is drill the hole at 8mm. then i clamp the AE crossmember into the car using 6mm all thread. measure it and adjust it so its aligned with the car, then one by one i remove the 6mm rod and match drill down through the celica chassis rail into the crush tube with a 13 (i think its 13mm) drill bit. this makes sure the holes line up perfectly.   some other points to note, AE86 crossmember and rack is 20mm a side wider than celica but the LCA has a kick in the end and the ball joint is angled which pulls the wheel back in. if you use all the AE86 parts the total increase in track is 7mm per side which equates to just under 1 degree of neg camber BUT, the bottom of the LCA will be closer to the disk by approx 6-8mm so check you have room.  there are plenty of ways around this, like using stock celica LCS's and dealing with the track increase in other ways, or using offset RCA's (once again increasing your track) so its not the biggest issue in the world.  the steering column needs to be modified so it has a bearing in the bottom end to support the shaft. there are lots of ways of doing this but i welded the tube from a AT141 corona (i think)  to the bottom of the celica steering column outer tube. the steering shafts in the early toyota (and lots of other things, PG hydraulics sell the steering shaft bar stock) all have the same plastic rivet with flats style sliding joint so its pretty easy to use the parts to get the right length with the universal joint on the end.  here are the few pictures ive taken, this is the crossmember all finished ready to bolt in. you can see the spacers ive used to move it down. it also has the engine mounts on it and ive seam weleded the whole thing. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr  Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr   this is the steering shaft with the new end showing the unis.  Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr   and this gives you an idea of clearance  Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr       so the rest. the flywheel and clutch all came from Brendan at night parts and you can get all those parts on trademe. the throw out bearing it a Tilton 6000 series one coupled with a Willwood 7/8 universal brake master cylinder. the Willwood part is really short and fits nicely to the firewall with a little opening out of the hole.  as for the link thats ongoing but its not a difficult thing to get working if you follow the instruction.   so yea, soon it will be supremely more drivable and i intend to daily it again for a while and park up the V8 whilst it gets some love and forced induction.

sheepers
still plugging away to get it back on the road for Matts wedding on the 18th of this month. thats right, the 18th which is 10 days away.  still to do, get sway bar back from manufacture and fit it (im told ill have it in my hand this Thursday) get drive shaft back and fit it (should get it back tomorrow night) finish re-wire of front end - headlights, horns, indicators etc tidy all the under dash wiring and put the dash back in tune it.   so not to much to do but there are still some major items which are out of my control and i get nervous with relying on suppliers to do as they say they will do. anywho, time will tell.  here's where its at as of Sunday night. engine bay is pretty much finished, just need to tidy up the wires under the intake and fit the air cleaner. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr    front end. loom needs extending on the passengers side and then its finished and can be fully re-assembled. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr     gear lever, short shifter made and fitted and new blank off plate made for the old hole in the floor (the stick is now further back than it was) Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr     lossa wires to tidy/sort out. Popular Post sheepers
and we're back.  Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr  everything seems to be working properly, the steering is like heaven compared to how it was and the clutch is magic. Brendan tuned it on the road and its running about 12psi at the mo. its very different in the power delivery to how it was with the factory computer. after the wedding ill dyno tune it with a bit more pressure and see what happens.

Popular Post sheepers
a little while ago (5 fucking years ago! as per top of the page) i discovered i could run wider wheels on the back of this thing and ever since ive wanted to make my wheels wider but never got around to it/spent money on my other cars but now is the hour!  so i was going to get some shells made locally but i was a bit hesitant after hearing that the locally made ones are a bit soft and tend to scratch very easily. for years id heard rumours that Simmons don't make 15's any more so id kind of discounted them but i thought "what the hell, it cant hurt to give Australia a ring"  WRONG! let me be very clear, Tempie tyres are the biggest bunch of useless cunts i have EVER delt with. they are incapable of of answering a question and absolutely unable to respond to any request for clarification on the garbled gibberish they think passes for an "answer".  do you think miracles don't happen? well have i got news for you.   Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr  thats right, i actually managed (after so much more hassle than it should have ever involved) to get the thing i wanted from Tempie tyres!! unfuckingbelievable i know but it happened!!  so now ill pull the wheels apart and put the new shells on the back and put the back shells on the front resulting on 15x9's on the back and 15x7.5's on the front.
