Popular Post sheepers
I forgot I had this spoiler. The homes it came with were in stupid places so I drilled some new ones and welded up the old ones. I fitted it to the car then blazed some more primer on it. Tomorrow I'll give ir a sand and put some colour on it.
Popular Post sheepers
painted the spoiler and put it on. i think it looks ace. the other thing i did was to move the rear flares up to suit the wheel and match the arc better. something i wished id done ages ago. moving the flare allowed me to move the wheel out a bit more to fill the guard, it can easily go a bit more and ive ordered some wider spacers for the back. 2020-04-22_03-10-59 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-04-22_03-11-06 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-04-22_03-11-19 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-04-22_03-11-29 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
goes without saying really but ive driven the crap out of this, drove it to work every day, supermarket, all that shit. anywho the clutch slave shit itself which tbh isnt that big of a surprise. the pedal pressure on the clutch was immense, the whole fire wall flexed so much the brake master hit the strut tower. the clutch that was in it was the highest pressure 250mm exceedy clutch you can buy. and it had started slipping. so Richard gave me a hand (because i dropped an engine on one of mine) and we took the JZ out to replace clutch slave and clutch. im just going to replace the seals in the clutch slave because fuck you cardwells you thieving bunch of cunts. and im replacing the old clutch with a twin disk OS Giken unit which requires less force on the spring tines but has double the clamping pressure. its a sprung center unit and fingers crossed its actually drivable on the street. consensus is that it will be fine once i get the hang of it so thats good with me. ill do a few other things while the motor is out because why the fuck not and then ill chuck it back together. then do a skid i would expect. 2020-07-25_03-40-31 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-07-25_03-40-21 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-07-25_03-40-04 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-07-25_03-39-53 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
put the motor back in. did some wiring tidy up and some other shit to. put a new core in the radiator because it had a leaking tube. that was a cunt of a job. then i went to fill it up with water and the heater core tubes were cracked. not surprised really, ive never had the heater out of this car in the 20 years ive had it and the brass tubes get a fucking workout everytime i take the motor out what with getting the hoses on and off. so out with the heater box and repair the core. the tubes themselves were all out of shape and deformed so i was able to reshape them back to round and tidy them up so thats good. it'd be nice to get this thing back on the road some time soon, this clutch replacement has taken fucking ages. 2020-08-24_09-04-40 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-09-08_07-43-55 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-09-08_07-44-09 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-09-08_07-44-16 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-09-08_07-44-25 by sheepers, on Flickr 2020-09-08_07-44-32 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
All back together now. Had a turbo shit off a time getting the heater hoses back on because some idiot stuffed a huge motor right in the way. New clutch (remember that, the reason we pulled it apart in the first place) is really good, it's a tiny bit grabby at take off but it's not really bedded in at all so I don't know if this will get better or worse. Also i have connected the boost control pipes around the wrong way so it's free boosting up to about 30psi. Easy fix that. I drove it to work.
Popular Post sheepers
oh, hi!! so yea things have been great with this car. except the output bushing on the gearbox is flopping around and subsequently the output seal is leaking and flinging oil all over the exhaust. this is shit. the gearbox has only done a couple thousand Ks since it was brand new from Toyota. apparently this is fairly common on the new R154s which fucks me off even more. I've fucked around with changing the seal multiple times and all the other usual checks but it just keeps on leaking. cool. so to fix it i have to take the motor and box out because of the whole massive drive train/small car thing so out the motor comes. its fairly depressing taking a motor, that you have worked very hard on to make as new and shiny as you can, out of a car and seeing all the road grime and shit on it, as well as all the crap that goes everywhere when you start taking things apart. well, its what has to be done so away we go. not sure what else ill do while the motor is out. im not 100% happy with the clutch i put in it. its juddery and grabby at take off which sucks so that may change. fuck knows.............. anywho, first step, jack up your car. 2021-05-04_05-59-44 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
pulled it to bits and got it ready to remove the motor. ive ordered some parts which willtake ages to get here so im in no hurry. i thought id tidy up some stuff while im waiting. water return pipe from the turbo went into the original spigot and the second one was just blanked off. it looked a bit dumb so i pulled the stainless tubes out, welded up the holes and welded a dash 6 nipple on lower down. 2021-05-09_07-04-13 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-09_07-04-05 by sheepers, on Flickr then i thought id make a new, smaller radiator reservoir and windscreen washer bottle because real-estate in that area is real tight and its a pain in the arse to get to anything in that space. not finished yet but getting there. cut some 75mm box section put a pie cut in the bottom to help clear the body work better weld caps on each end sand them up a bit weld the screw caps in still got to put the inlet outlet fittings in and mount the little electric motor for the windscreen washers but that shouldnt be a drama. ill just hide it underneath like i did for the V8 2021-05-11_08-14-23 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-29 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-35 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-41 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
so, everything is out and I've puled the bush out of the gearbox. i had to make a tool to bash it out. i measured 0.06mm float between the driveshaft and the bush. i dont see this as being an issue and i cant see how this amount of play would cause the lip seal to leak as soon as you drive at motorway speeds. got any ideas as to why it keeps pumping oil out the rear gearbox seal? the seal i put in it isnt a directional one to be fair, however it is the correct size and ive put 3 different ones in it and its shit itself every time. there is no drive line vibration at all. the gearbox is less than 5000Ks old i dunno what else? also im not happy with the clutch so i going to try something different. 2021-05-16_03-07-03 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-54 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-36 by sheepers, on Flickr 14
Popular Post sheepers
we're all familiar with the term "project scope creep" aren't we. well, im still waiting for my clutch to arrive and while ive been waiting ive been thinking how easy it is to work on the motor while its out of the car. so i bought a new turbo. 2021-06-27_04-04-44 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-27_04-04-56 by sheepers, on Fickr New turbo is a Garrett G30-770 with a 0.83A/R exhaust housing. im looking for a fatter torque curve and this should provide it. along with more power but thats beside the point. the old turbo has been spewing oil into the inlet tract and everything is filthy. 2021-06-27_04-03-45 by sheepers, on Flickr so i got to wondering if the pistons and valves were covered in burnt yuck carbon oil mess. so i found out, 2021-06-27_04-03-33 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-27_04-03-26 by sheepers, on Flickr so yea its pretty clean on the whole so ill chuck a new gasket in it and put it back together. still waiting on my clutch and now ive ordered a new intercooler as well. 41
Popular Post sheepers
i cleaned the things. then i put the motor back together. the cam gears have a slot in them for the dowel that is too big. the slot in the cam gear is 5.4 whilst the pin is 5mm. doesn't sound like much but its a good 5 degrees of play when you set up the cam timing. so to fix it i made some stepped dowels out of a 5.4mm drill bit. once id done that i re-dialed the cams to get them right. 2021-07-04_04-14-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-14-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-14-56 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-15-02 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
right so, its all back together. but first, new clutch. its a niteparts designed unit which holds heaps of torque but drives like a normal car. this thing is huge. check out the friction plate on top of the Giken twin plate unit! 20210713_184945 by sheepers, on Flickr 20210713_184938 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-44-05 by sheepers, on Flickr 20210713_183646 by sheepers, on Flickr right so then i put the motor back in the car. had to mod the turbo dump pipe. also had to mod the intercooler piping by the throttle body to include a new larger blow off valve. other things done include all new pipe work to and from the turbo and all new hoses for the wastegate. im waiting on a new intercooler which should be here in a couple of weeks too. and tonight i took it for a drive round the block, so far so good. noo doortz though as it needs to be tuned with the new turbo. its booked on the dyno on the 6th of August. 2021-07-21_08-32-36 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-32-14 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-32-24 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
its all coming together nicely. i had a fault with the idle speed controller which turned out to be a short in the loom so i fixed that. i needed more travel in the clutch to fully disengage it so i changed the master to a 13/16 bore and its perfect now. honestly the clutch is like your driving a corolla, its that good. so i have been doing some Ks in it to bed the clutch before the dyno on Friday and everything is working perfectly, im super stoked with it all. i cant really give it any stick because the tune is wrong for this turbo and it might shit itself so im being gentle. which sucks. the other thing i did was make a tool to aid adjusting the cams during the dyno session on firday. its really hard to see what your doing and its hard to accurately adjust them so im hoping this tool will make life easier. 2021-08-01_04-21-50 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-26 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-33 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
Dyno day. Glen beat on the poor old girl like a rented mule and it took it all like a champ. Only had one small issue with spark plug boots not being tight enough and it starting missing at high boost. That was easy fixed and it ended up making 460RWKW at 25psi. I still have a new intercooler to fit and then it'll get a new tune but it won't change much. If I thought it was frightening before I got a whole new level of violence to learn about. Graph shows old turbo tune and new turbo tune at both boost levels for each. 64
Popular Post sheepers
i ordered a new intercooler ages ago but it was coming from auz and they went into lockdown right when i ordered it so it took 3 months instead of 3 weeks. anywho it turned up and i went about making it fit. its wider but not as high as the one that was on the car. a quick note about the intercooler that was on the car. its an R32 GTR intercooler that i put on the car about 2007 and it has been through hell and back and it took it all. it stoved the side of Spencer's soarer in, its taken literally hundreds of hits into curbs and driveways and fucking all manner of shit and its never had a leak or a broken tube or anything. this thing needs a place in the hall of fame. so yea, new intercooler will flow WAY better than the old one and the dyno will tell the story. i made a new bracket thing to hold the cooler and it had two mounting holes on the bottom but because i cant use the top ones i thought id add two more to the bottom just because. i only had a small piece of square aluminium so i made it round and welded them on. 3the new intercooler sits about 30mm higher than the old one too so thats a good. at some point imma make a front air dam for this thing. 2021-09-25_06-12-31 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-25_06-11-50 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-25_06-11-58 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-26_05-10-21 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-26_05-10-43 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-25_06-12-12 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-09-26_05-10-37 by sheepers, on Flickr

Popular Post sheepers
time to make a front air dam for this thing. its only been needing one for 16 odd years so I've really not hung around on this. i bought an english wheel and a bead roller, neither of which i have any idea of how to use but you gotta start somewhere. so i made up a wire frame using 3.2 dia welding rods then put some cardboard on it. i used the cardboard as a template to cut out some steel then i went about wheeling a tiny bit of shape into it just to give the pieces some rigidity. with some folding, some beating with a mallet and a bit more rolling i ended up with what you see below. for a first time doing this im fucking amazed at how good it is, im really happy i was able to get the shapes i did without fucking it up too much. having said that im going to start again with the sheetmetal and make another one. i learned heaps just making this first one and i know i can make the second one better so i will give it a go. 2021-10-20_08-03-54 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-20_08-03-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-20_08-03-40 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-20_08-03-31 by sheepers, on Flickr
Popular Post sheepers
righto so i wasn't happy with the left side of the spoiler so i cut it off and made a new one. i was really happy with the fit and the shape so i went about finessing the thing to get it how i wanted it. i radiused the bottom corners and went about making it stronger, i welded a couple of bits of 1.6mm thick sheet all the way along the bottom edge to stop it flopping around then i set about making a good mounting for it. i ended up welding a bit of 3mm plate to it that bolts to the bottom of the intercooler bracket so its pretty strong. then i put another bit of 1.6mm sheet right across the lowest most forward point in the hope that when i inevitably crash it into something its got a bit of strength to it. then i put a coat of primer on it. and today i sanded it, put some bog on it and put some more primer on it. tomorrow ill wet sand it and put some colour on it and its finished. also this is the english wheel i bought. i wouldn't know a good english wheel from a fucking sandwich but this one worked for the thing i did and i was really happy with how well i was able to make the steel do what i wanted, so yea. 2021-10-20_07-24-20 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-24_03-00-29 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-24_03-00-39 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-24_03-01-06 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-10-24_03-00-55 by sheepers, on Flickr

Popular Post sheepers
i went back to the dyno with the new intercooler and well, sometimes it doesn't go your way. had many small issues throughout the day, in the end the fuel pressure started doing strange things right at the top end so we had to pull the pin. so at the end of the day i had a semi broken car and i was two grand lighter in the pocket which always make a bad day at the dyno even better. took the fuel system apart and couldn't really find anything obvious so i threw LOTS of money at it in the hope that it will be fixed. both pumps are new, two new larger fuel filters, much larger surge tank, new FPR and new injectors. the other thing im going to do is move the oil cooler because it had trouble getting rid of coolant temp. the oil temp and inlet air temps were perfect but the water was getting hot and it took a long time to come back down. 2021-11-12_07-03-34 by sheepers, on Flickr 20
