I now have a WoF for it, flew through easy as, took it down to meremere for a drive and it went well.

Over the weekend I put it on a dyno again to see what would happen. It made 60kw atw (perfect power dyno) which I thought was ok. But above 3000-3500rpm the engine goes above 12.7 afr up to around 17 at 6000. The dyno guys were not set up to play with carbed cars(odd story) so we couldnt really do too much more. I have ordered larger jets and will see what happens then although I wont get a chance to get back on the dyno before nats I wanted to be a bit happier about not blowing up the engine due to extended periods of running lean. In saying that though I havent noticed any signs of running too hot especially at higher rpm so im not really sure whats going on. I guess ill just up the timing and see if I make more power.

In the lean condition, does water temp rise or not necessarily? Also, if you are running conservative timing is it still lean? I havent tuned a car before so not too sure on some/all of these things

OK, took this thing down to the nats, and it went like a champ, and then the gearbox blew...

heres the gears, it appears that all the teeth that blew, did so pretty cleanly as theres almost no tiny bits/swarf like material, the inside of the gearbox was really clean as I have previously had it apart to replace some gaskets

So, after getting goldibox on the road, I got sick of the loud ticking from what I thought was the tappets. It made a racket following the revs even though I had just reset the tappets, so I took off the rockers and one the valves has what I think to be a large groove/recess/indent in the top of it where the rocker arm comes down on top of it. After some spam related banter, I decided to take the head off and have a look and take the head to lyn rodgers for them to look at. I have just dropped it off there this afternoon so wil see what they come back with.

Was quite interesting taking the head off though, as I understood the engine had been modified but I was unsure. Now I have a pretty good picture of whats been done. The engine being an early type, also has the early type chambered head, which has been cleaned up significantly from factory. The head also has the largest valves possible fitted to it, with 40.5mm inlet and 35.5mm exhaust (as in largest for this head). The bottom end has been bored out to 85.3mm which is a fairly large bore for a crossflow, let alone an early type block which is generally considered weaker and more prone to failure, although you never know with a xflow motor, you can get good ones and bad ones. The flat top pistons are not something I have seen before, all I know is that they are mahle type This large bore with the standard? stroke of a measured ~77.63mm gives a displacement of around 1775cc which is massive imo, same size motor as my galant but a bit more peppy :D . The head gasket is also quite an interesting shape, lyn rodgers had never seen one of this funny shape and it was interesting to note that it is the exact same ID as the cylinder bore, maybe custom made?

So it will be interesting to see if the head is still in good/reasonable condition when it gets pulled apart over the next few days. And if its all good, I will look into fitting some double valve springs, maybe solid rocker towers & a bigger cam to this motor as it seems as if it could be larger, maybe a bcf3 or a kent 244. Does anyone know if you can calculate(maybe only roughly) whether or not a cam will fit without having to go and buy one/some? If the head is buggered I will get another one built up to suit the rest of the motor/maybe i'll make up a head

The car is now back together awaiting a new temp sensor before I am able to start it up again, the head has been acid dipped, has all new heavy duty valve springs as fitted to formula ford motors, has new exhaust valves, a 0.010" skim and new lash caps to fit over all valves to stop wear as the valves are custom. The head has such large valves that it is not possible to fit hardened inserts but lyn rodgers was quite happy with the general condition of the head with only a small crack starting to propogate which was drilled out and fitted with a threaded insert. I have also fitted a new Cometic 0.040" thick head gasket, I have heard of issues with this brand not sealing so I am hoping this is not the case for me.

I have also removed the exhaust wrap and had the intake and exhaust manifolds cermakromed. I am pretty happy with the final result, and it stops my arms from getting unbareably itchy after brushing up against the heap wrap

Also, I fitted the NGK BP7ES spark plugs which I understand are a more appropriate plug for a warmed up engine

In the next couple of days I will attempt startup, hope it goes alright

well I got it running, went first go, should be expected I guess. I filled the radiator and let the car warm up with the cap off to try get the air bubbles out of the system but it overflowed everywhere and eventually erupted. So I refilled the system as best I could, then put the cap on, it should be sweet. When I see the car next I will redo the tappets, take it for a drive somewhere then re-torque the headbolts then should be sorted for some more extended motoring. Too bad this weather is so shit at the moment

And fitted, a couple of guys at work are showing me how to polish them and its coming up amazing, hopefully it stays that way although I have heard that stainless headers go blue then a crusty color after a while...

They are stainless headers from 105speed in the UK

I also have fitted a new oil catch can as the other one leaked, this one looks ace as

well I havent made a new post on this in a while

 

basically I have just driven it and its been sweet, thats it, been to a few track days, fitted a big radiator and a front lip, nothing has broken just yet although below I show some funny results which is the main reason for posting today

 

heres a pic of the radiator, made by real deal radiators, cost a small fortune but was fully custom made and was made exactly to my drawing which is good

 

and heres a pic of the spark plugs and a video of a compression test of cylinder 4 on the motor

 

All the spark plugs look sweet except cylinder 3 has an oily residue on it, maybe rings or stem seals? the head was taken apart and cleaned etc so I dont think it would be stem seals so probably rings?

and heres video of compression test, this seems really low, but the car runs fine so I'm not sure what to make of it. Thats making 115 psi, the other cylinders were making 1-130, 2-120, 3-115. Test was done with throttles wide open

I now have new ls2 coils, leads and 12v wiring plugs as well as laser cut brackets. NZ post is messing me around with the microsquirt but should be here in a week or so

 

there are 2 of these brackets which will be mounted to the tappet cover

next order just turned up, was going to try get this fitted/running before nats but timing doesnt agree so much any more. I just need to order throttle bodies, then get manifold and hall effect sensor bracket made. Then I will have everything required in theory

bulkhead plug arrived and got a couple of bulkhead brake fittings so got a bit high tech with a cnc and a custom made o-ring courtesy of sentra dave. The brake fittings are for the pressure lines from the new pedal box, a separate unit will be made to mount the reservoirs with lines dropping down from above.

 

Unfortunatetly the pedal box doesnt quite fit up so a it of cutting, folding and welding will be required, but thats next weeks job
