I keep blowing exhaust gaskets on the middle branch where it is bolted to the head... always blows out the top, i think its because of the excess motor movement and that middle branch is only held on by two centralised bolts rather than one top and one bottom like the other two branches.... RT Posted August 3, 2005 Share Posted August 3, 2005 yeah.. well.. I had problems with the turbo blowing exhaust gaskets. Maybe some of the things I learn't might help.. but you're running a 1600 xflow aye?.. dunno if this applies then. Firstly, you can get the manifold face planned flat.. if it's warped then it will blow. Secondly, the gaskets from repco, the ones that have individual peices for each port, are shit. Only good for factory setup.. they only have metal on one side and paper shit on the others. The best gaskets are the oldschool type, single peice, with metal on both sides. And now I snapped a stud too so it sounds even more haneous How about getting the face of the extractors shaved??? Is it possible when there is three seperate parts that bolt up to the head??? Guest kris Posted August 3, 2005 Share Posted August 3, 2005 I'v had a couple of sets of escort extractors blow the middle gasket - they weren't made that accurately, and dropping them on the floor can often misalign the middle ones for some reason. So, my bet is that it is the extractors, and not the head face - but it is possible. I have found that changing the order that i did the bolts up helped, doing the central ones first. You might be able to get someone to use a surface grinder on them - but it hardly seems worth the cost. While I hate to suggest it (it is a really awful idea) some people have had good results from using 2 sets of gaskets, it gives more complicance for things to even out. Jerm Posted August 3, 2005 Author Share Posted August 3, 2005 I think its being caused by excess engine movement.. is my engine moves sideways quite a bit and it may be twisting the joint.. as that middle branch the bolts are in a different configuration to the other two pipes which i think is alowing it to twist a little vertically.. which is casuing it to disturb the gasket and eventually blow... might look into gettign some firmer/better engine mounts? as mine are fuckign shit... Toucan Posted August 3, 2005 Share Posted August 3, 2005 I'm fully in exactly the same situation as you Jerm, my rubber's look twisted and worn and I'm sure it moves way too much. A guy at VTNZ told me (he used to be a ford mechanic) that I should put a bracket from the exhaust underneath the passenger side floorpan across to the gearbox, other wise theres too much weight on the extractors and they will move and eventually crack? Jerm Posted August 3, 2005 Author Share Posted August 3, 2005 Yeah i think they actually come with brackets that go to the gb or engine from the factory.. i don't have one though.. you the flexi sounds like the go, i think the engine does move to much though cos sometimes when i launch or suddenly put alot of load on the engine i hear a knock.. i think it is the exhaust hitting the floor pan/base of firewall. I had that problem, was easy to fix, just take it to the exhaust shop and get them to weld a bracket which goes from the extractors to the gearbox. I'd recomend getting it so that you can unbolt it though, so you don't have to remove your extractors when you are removing your gearbox. SYKOV6 Posted August 4, 2005 Share Posted August 4, 2005 i had the same prob on a mk2 esky i had when i was a kid. i got a bracket made from the extractors to the g/box then it started to brake the exhaust at the extractor joint did this about once every 2 weeks !. got a flexi joint between the extractors and main exhaust problem solved never happened again . SYKOV6 Posted August 4, 2005 Share Posted August 4, 2005 i had mine from the very bottom of the extractors it was about 200mm long the extractors had the brace to the bellhousing also. this is so the extrac can move with the engine and the exhaust can move independently. i didnt have a removeable flange on the extrac/exhaust joint the flexi was welded directly between the 2 but you could just as easily weld it on after the flange Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
