trunk-rattlin
ok so 5spds? i hear all this who-ha about the sierra 5 spd with the 2L but is there any 5spd boxes that bolt up to a 1600 (mk2 escort). Maybe a 1.6L sierra or what? im sure those may be a bit rare. What about toyota boxes such as Celica? If youve heard about this, what year celica boxes are used? Im wanting a 5spd and what would be a decent ball park figure? under 1000? Its going to be good in the long run from fuel savings an engine wear. Also, if anyone has 13 or 14x7 wheels 4x108 i mite be keen. keep the info rolling in!!!!! holla back
kyteler
If you're after a Celica box it will be the early 80's one, the Supra box is a lot tougher with taller gears but unneccesary for an Escort. You will need a bellhousing to suit which is where the problem will lie, I'm not sure whether you can get one and/or if there is one that is interchangable off something else. No idea. The box itself should only be a couple of hundred but then the getting the mounts done, driveshaft etc. could add up a bit depending how much you do yourself. Mr.Mk1
Im workin on a how to in the very near future! The Sierra box fits all engines from 1100 block though 2L block. I wouldnt worry anout a Celica box, you would need an auto tunnel and heaps more money to pay for it, plus the bellhousing wont fit, driveshaft and UJs probably wont either. Mounts will be included in my how to, with pix. Damn you to hell Kyteler, posting while I am trying to type mine!

Toucan
Box shouldnt be more than $250 at a guess? There may be other ways of doing it, cause that guide seems real complex and all the people who have done it wouldnt of gone to that much trouble I'm sure of it But yea its a great guide so you cant go wrong. I would do it but I'm sposed to be saving for Uni next year...
davidian
shouldnt costa ya too much to install bo. as long as your escy used to be auto. if its a manual than someones gonna have to butcher the tranny tunnel, so good luck gettin quotes for that, but it is a minimal fabrication jobbie... trunk-rattlin
sweet as bo. its a 4spd manual. And is it best to get someone to do it that has done that conversion before? I dont think anyone in rotorua would have
Mr.Mk1
For a Sierra box you wont need to butcher shit, all you need to do is take off the two wee mounts on the side of the tunnel and the big half-circle one in the middle.
trunk-rattlin
so will a box off a 2L bolt onto the 1600?
si
i always thought the 2L gbox only fitted the 2L pinto, and the same for the 1600, but yea might pay to check. Sierras bits are cheep as chips nowdays, there are so many of the things around
trunk-rattlin
how do i check? And how come all these old people i talk to think that celica boxes are the best option?
Mr.Mk1
The 2L box fits all engines from 1100 to 3.0 V6. Everyone says about celica boxes because the cars in magazines have them and thats all they know - they read it in a magazine. These guys had massive budgets so went all out. Its probably much stronger than a sierra box but u shouldnt blow it with your motor if you drive it half normally. Even so, if blown, it wont cost much to get another one. kyteler
Firstly, if they're going on about Celica boxes then they're probably not that clued up, the Celica box is OK, but not the ideal option, the Supra box is what most people use when they do big V8 builds in Fords and Holdens, because it's ideally geared for the torque and power as well as being really strong. As I said before, in an Escort, it's really unneccesary.

Mr.Mk1
IM FUCKING TRYING TO COVER THAT IN MY HOW-FUCKING-TO!!!! Aherm, sorry all, pent up frustration from sitting here all night typing, not ment to offend, unfortunately, it most likely will The wee mounts on the sides of the tunnel have threads built into them: What I did was cut the threads out and sandwitch'd them onto my new g/b mounts, as such: Oh god, its numb from my guts down, that cannot be healthy
trunk-rattlin
so can we get a guesstamite of how much it would cost all up for parts and labour. Thats the most vital
two_days_late
i paid $110 for my 5 speed sierra box. they bolt straight up to the 1600 escort motor but you must modify the engine backplate but thats not hard. then you keep the escort flywheel but use the sierra clutch. just take the clutch and flywheel into a machine shop and they will redrill the escort flywheel to fit the sierra clutch. i got charged $60 for this. you will also have to move your gearbox mounts back and get a shorter drive shaft. so your probably lookin at, $100 - $200 for the gearbox, $60 - $100 to get the flywheel machined. and then how ever much to get the drive shaft shortened and the mounts changed. also the gear leave is about 10 cm further back than the escort one so you will have to cut out a new hole in your gearbox tunnel. most people just cut out a section with the hole thats already there and then turn it around so the holes further back. also when your in 4th gear and have the handbrake on the leaver will touch the handbrake (who knows why youd be in 4th with the handbrake on but yea) but for the low low price of 3 ten mill nuts and bolts you can convert the box to quick shift, ill find the instructions if you like, its easy and makes the shift a lot shorter. so yea any other questions just ask
