Bling Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Ask your certifier for their NDT form. I got mine welded and tested out of town and didn't know there was a form till he gave it to me, oops... It basically said what they were looking for test wise. They might all have different requirements though, but worth asking to save a headache later. 1 Quote
beachlander Posted May 30 Posted May 30 Adding another question about weld on coilovers. Have been looking into Ae86 coilover options and am pretty keen on a Shockworks set from Aus. They sent through a pic of what they look like, and instead of a full tube like most are, they have a stub at the bottom which is a tight fit within the shock tube, as below. Guessing this would be a no go as there is no area for plug welds? They did mention the stub on the bottom of the tube is longer than the diameter of the factory shock tube. Quote
RXFORD Posted May 30 Posted May 30 So they basically get an ae86 strut, cut it , add the threaded sleeve and sell them pre welded like that? If they come as pictured, that wouldn't meet the criteria in the Ccm as the smaller oem tube doesn't slip at least the oem tube diam up into the new threaded tube, and as you said, theres no plug weld space.  If you can buy them unwelded and get the threaded tube without that stupid window cut into it, then you could just build your own same as Vk327 is going to do. I had some Ve Commo Shockworks adjustables Ok'd by Clint a couple weeks back. I hadn't dealt with them before. According to Ben Jenkins, Shockworks stuff it just BC suspension that Shockworks order to thier own specs, make fabricated mounts for and put thier own logo on.  1 Quote
beachlander Posted May 30 Posted May 30 No, they come as shown in the first pic. I questioned the stub on the bottom and he sent me the second pic of how it is assembled Quote
RXFORD Posted May 31 Posted May 31 You said the have a "stub at bottom that is a tight fit within shock tube"... Did you mean they are a tight fit into knuckle?  The 2 pics are not the same. The top pic is a threaded tube with a stub at bottom that is one piece. The bottom pic is a sleeved and welded setup. I suspect the top pic is designed to be a tight fit into the knuckle, then welded from the underside like an oem tube would to stop it from rotating in the knuckle. But lvvta don't allow welding to casting/forgings so I doubt that would fly over here. I'm unsure if the press in fitment on its own would be good enough or if any other form of retaining like a grub screw/pin would be allowed as it would require drilling the knuckle. Quote
beachlander Posted May 31 Posted May 31 This is how it is mounted as confirmed by Shockworks. So the stub is inside the factory strut tubing and the weld goes along the stepped up size of the threaded tube. Quote
RXFORD Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Ah yeh I'm with ya now. Centre stub acts as a locator and the shoulder butts up and gets welded. I had a mate in Tga do a mazda set like that a couple years back and they failed cert due to the no plug weld thing. I'm unsure if thats been relaxed now. Would have to tag @cletus in or email Lvvta. cletus Posted May 31 Posted May 31 If its outside of the recipe in the standard, then lvvta would have to approve it I dont think it would go through if theres no way of doing the plug welds and it doesn't have 1x diameter inserted Also I dunno if having that big window/ hole in the tube on a mcpherson strut would be approved either  2 Quote
beachlander Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Sweet thank you, thought that might be the case, will look for something more standard then. Quote

Be worth talking to the guys at speedfactor who i just got my xyz setup from, they can do all sorts of lower weld on sleeves and custom top hat camber plates, the commodore kit is pretty good at just over $1900 shipped Quote
JustHarry Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Do they also need a fake racing number and a plastic roll bar to get a wof? 4 2 Quote
Shakotom Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Probs been asked before How does one reuse a old plate? TDLR: have a 60s motorbike plate I want to put on a 60s bike ( it’s not from that bike)  - plate doesn’t show in car jam but shows as unavaliable on kiwi plates. who do you email to release it to buy as a p plate? thank you Quote
Bling Posted June 9 Posted June 9 First post in here might help. It will at least be a good place to email first  1 Quote

Bling Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Yeah I just figured it might be a place to start to see about releasing the plate to be reissued. I get it's not going on the original bike. But I imagine it's NZTA who decides if a plate can be made available or not. Quote
RUNAMUCK Posted Thursday at 03:47 Posted Thursday at 03:47 Are ball.joint taper adapters permitted? IE, a cone shaped sleeve with the precise internal and external tapers to make one size smaller ball joint fit the next size up hole? Quote
