sheepers Posted March 7 Posted March 7 im finding some conflicting info around oil catch cans. i want to cert my gtr. its got bigger front brakes, single turbo, link ECU, remote oil catch can, battery relocation, momo steering wheel and thats all i can think of thats relevant. question is, i saw Clint post on facebook that if the engine is the original one then they dont do emissions test and a catch can doesn't have to be plumped back to the pcv, but the the info sheets say different. what do i actually need to do here? also, any traps to fix with the other items? its been a while since i certed anything and the rules change so rapidly i cant keep up. cletus Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Got a link to the info sheet you are talking about ? My interpretation is currently the same, mod oe engine doesn't need to comply with any requirements in the emissions check sheet , pcv venting is one of those Drive shaft loop if its got more than 50 percent more powers. Battery secured and vented outside the boot Lock washers on any bolts that are not oe Heat shielding anything heat sensitive (brake pipes, abs units) from big hot things like turbz or wastegates etc 2 Quote
sheepers Posted March 7 Posted March 7 tbh it was a section copied out of one of the info sheets and it referred to some other sections that weren't visible. im struggling a bit to find info on stock engines that have had a tickle up, everything talks about engine swaps and the info on stock engines is a bit sparse. when you say "Lock washers on any bolts that are not oe" do you mean ANY bolt or bolts that do something important? like what if my exhaust studs aren't OE? or a bolt that holds a pipe clamp? cletus Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Anything that does a safety related thing or holds an engine in. Like brake caliper bolts or engine mount bolts or driveshaft loop bolts /nuts 1 Quote
shizzl Posted March 7 Posted March 7 How feasible is it to swap the vague steering box, drag link arrangement out of the ute for a rack and pinion from say a Barina, and a electric assist column? is it a case of running a collapsing column as it is a very short shot from the rack to the motor. just questioning this idea. i already have a electric column that used to be in an escort rally car. So why not try and use that Quote
cletus Posted March 8 Posted March 8 It is do able There are challenges A big one is geometry - it is sometimes difficult to find a rack that works with a front end designed for a box , ie the centers of the rack ends are close together enough to work with the pivot points of the front suspension arms This is why you end up with abortions like those RRS setups for fords Mounting is another thing , the rack needs to go in the right place for bump steer to work, and not hit the engine, and not be too low that it's vulnerable to damage, and the steering shaft to work around the exhaust, correct u j angles etc , and there needs to be something suitable to mount it to Then theres rack suitability vs vehicle weight, you cant use a rack from a small car in something that is heavy, especially if its going to have a power column when it wasn't designed for it These are the main hurdles I can think of off the top of my head 2 1 Quote
cletus Posted March 8 Posted March 8 If its just a single skin panel, can make hole for piping. Quote
Leone Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Thanks Clink, easy if i can get it thru jsut that front panel, but im concerned i may need to go into the lower radiator support panel where its stitched to the front panel... have done a better job at trying to show where the cut might go... Quote
Bling Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Just lift the pipe up to be nice and clear of that spot welded seam, that seems like a can of worms that once opened, you're not closing back up again. For bonus points, panel beat the inside edge over like that factory one on the right hand side for strength. Cutting into that radiator support will be bad news i'm sure. Tune in a 6pm for the latest news from Clint. 3 Quote
Leone Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Thanks, i thought it would be a no go, space is at a premium and although it looks like there is a bit there.... there isn't haha. and I'll take all the bonus points i can get.... will certainly help when the time comes for inspection. Quote
63Ragtop Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Guwd damn, I'd love me some rack and pinion steering in the vw!! Quote
ThePog Posted April 7 Posted April 7 So the neighbour has a diesel Fiat 500 that the EGR shat itself, it would run for 10 20 mins then choke up and stop. Replacement setups cost something like 6x the value of the car so obviously not worth it. I did a bit of research and some stupid circuit turned up on a Fiat forum that you spliced into shit to fool the ecu that the egr was working. It was $5 worth of Jaycar poos and a minor amount of time so we went for it, and much to my surprise it appears to actually work.. The question is whether or not that is actually legal? 2 Quote
