ThePog Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 The X1/9s have a factory 5 or 6mm spacer, I know chaps who have been pulled up in it and have had to prove they were factory... 2 Quote

Is it a 'double D' type or just a flat section where the spline is for a pinch bolt to lock against? If its just a small flat section for pinch bolt it should be be fine as long as its machined in nicely and its not over done so the bolts sloppy or done with an angle grinder. Some have a radiused recess for the bolt instead of a flat. I have had PG Hydraulics's shorten/remake & respline shafts over the years with no cert issue. Is it an electric column? Quote

Yeah it’s just flat, the bolt slides in hard against that. GM unit 1 Quote

I assumed that was a modification which would require cert but I can't see a specific section in the Certification Thresholds that would be triggered by this change. Appreciate if anyone can point to LVVTA documentation that clarifies the situation. Note that the original car would not have had any power assistance. To add further challenge for me the car is out of town (like the other end of the country) so inspection is no easy. 18 hours ago, cletus said: If it's not in the threshold= needs cert. The modification threshold only lists the stuff that can be done without a cert. Adding electric ps definitely needs cert, and they can be problematic as it adds load to parts that didn't have much load on them previously, plus the kits you can buy generally don't comply with lvv requirements due to welded shafts etc OK, so there is no doubt it needs certification and to my knowledge there is no plate or tag on the car so I assume it doesn't have certification. It now transpires that the EPS unit was fitted in Australia before the car was imported and registered in NZ. I have no idea how that process works but would that imply that the EPS unit has been checked and deemed to comply otherwise it would not have been able to be registered? 1 Quote
oldrx7 Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 ^ Is it an old car? When was it imported / registered in NZ? Quote
AllTorque Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 What kind of car? Chances are the guy doing the entry certification didn’t know what he was looking at. 4 Quote

cletus Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 yep it probably got missed at compliance and should have been certified. its not uncommon for things like that to get overlooked if its not obvious- ie if thats the only mod, and it drives normally, and its not painted bright yellow with XTREME VOLVO PERFORMANC KUSTOMZ or something written on it, and the inspector did a less than thorough inspection of the column area then it would be easy to miss, especially if theres a cover over the column or the unit is hidden up behind the dash 4 1 1 Quote

Truenotch Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I have a silly question for @cletus or any WOF inspectors out there. Lots of factory option Bilstein suspension is "circlip" style with an aluminium spring perch like this: I have a set of adjustable coilovers like this: Hypothetically, if I spun the thread off and turned these into "non adjustable" circlip style perches, would I be able to get a WOF without a cert (provided it looked factory). Quote
ul9601 Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 curious myself. a while back i had a few more grooves added to bilsteins (it might have been too low or not low enough) and had wof no problem but i dont know it was whether the inspectors were slack. Quote

Technically no In the threshold it mentions that spring seats must be oem unmodified The circlip adjustable bilsteins have always required cert, unless they were factory fitted in that specific vehicle when manufactured However they are often one of those things that gets wofs without cert, usually because the wof guy doesn't notice or read the rules properly A guy I know had some in a falcon and that got wofs because the circlip fell down into the lowest position so the other slots were not visible any more A person could be a criminal and remove the adjustableness and paint them black or something and try their luck I guess but that would be illegal technically so I would never suggest that you might get away with that I have heard stories of other criminals that just swap suspension once a year to get wofs and they say that's pretty easy to do and then they don't have to damage their bilsteins 2 2 5 Quote
GARDRB Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 Haha I'm in the crusty bilstein crew, but I think the keeper springs on mine might ruin any potential to be a criminal Quote
zep Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 I'm looking at shifting my rear rotors from behind the axle mounting face to the front, slotting over the wheel studs. To do this I'll have to turn down the mounting face. Are there any requirements for how much meat needs to be around the stud holes? x in the pic below. Quote

I can get the actual measurements if needed. Quote
