I highly doubt Rock Auto parts will be compliant despite $20 Silverline pads being ok unless they have brand names sold here.

They may have changed things it has been a while since I was replacing quality pads with cheap rubbish because of rules but where you got them was more important than what you got.

 

If that Mitsi has the front calipers with the two plates wedging the pads in I'd swap them for later ones because I hate them and they confuse me.

Can be certed but you need to strengthen the arm because the weight is then concentrated on two small bolt holes which were only meant for shocks. Also coil bind can be a problem if you have a heavy engine eg a big block in a camaro I looked at had that issue

If it was me I'd probably just get a spring that worked in the stock position and run a good adjustable shock

Sweet. Was thinking along the lines of machining a piece of steel to the same as the bottom of the spring then using a 8mmish washer to transfer the weight out to the spacer if that makes any sense. Should in theory place the weight in the same position as standard. Abit of height adjustability would be nice.

Hi @cletus I've read through the thread and there were a few queries regarding power steering delete ages ago.

The answers then were:

either

- non-power steering equivalent fitted

or

- rack modified by a reputable place

Would it be certable if NDT shows a welded pinion to be good even if it is done by other than a reputable place, i.e. a competent welder?

If so, what NDT would be required - FPI crack check? X-ray for porosity?

I ask this because I had a pinion welded up a while ago (which was well before I read up on this thread) based on what is supposedly a common mod amongst MX5 crowds overseas.

Yes the hobby car manual (which I presume is superseded by ccm?) states that that internal components within a rack and pinion steering assy fitted to a LVV must not incorporate any welding but the previous discussion on this thread appears that power steering delete is allowed if done (I don't know if this involves) by a reputable shop.

Regardless, if NDT shows no defect, shouldn't it be good (in theory, at least)?

You can have power steering deleted in a rack but it must be done by a known and reputable steering specialist and an invoice must be provided to the certifier as evidence. No idea how they do it, but that's why they are the expert and I'm not. LoL

(if you are unsure of your steering specialist is known and reputable then talk to your certifier for a name he trusts)

Pg hydraulics in east tamaki is the only place I could recommend with confidence for steering work
