  1. I've enjoyed reading other people's 'other' projects including campervan stuff so will try to post some non-car-related stuff I get up to when I'm not working on the Levin/Corolla/Subaru or Lexus.... So we purchased this sight-unseen at the other end of the north island. Previous owner had stripped it back, had a baby and then realised how much work it is. What could go wrong?!? Last weekend, I towed from Paraparaumu back to palmy with the front of the body flapping around in the wind, roof collapsing etc. 100% dodgy. Wasn't actually attached as welds had broken. It's a 15ft generic 80's caravan. 1930mm inside height currently. Bearings and frame seem to be in OK condition, everything else needs some work. Good thing it was cheap. Aiming for basic use summer 2024 and completion by summer 2025 as finishing the Levin is taking the priority currently. We were looking for a blank canvas to start with so this should be perfect once we address some key issues; - Replace roof skin & frame. Aiming to make it 100mm higher in the centre - Replace front and rear panels (lower) - Relocate a few windows - Repair frame, particularly where it's been cut to run elec wires. Might rebuild parts of it to allow optimal window placement. - sandblast & paint frame. New tow hitch/weld mounting plate - New brake calipers (brackets and discs already there) - maybe replace 12mm floor with new ply Have now propped up the roof and bolted the frame back to the trailer in preparation for towing it back to Hamilton.
  2. Hi my names Greg, You may know me from such places as Gregs Ice Cream. https://www.facebook.com/Gregsicecreams/ Or other places like Midnight Upholstery Ltd, Greg's drag snags and so on. Anyway the time has come. I got sick of bidding on rubbish caravans and them blowing out of budget so its now my turn to build one that will hopefully stay under budget. Well really it started with liking ice cream and realizing how easy it is to buy ice cream and it takes nothing to sell it, and a word to my accountant while the wife was with me it wasn't to hard to twist @Mrs 64valiant arm into allowing me to get the go ahead on it. And yeah caravans going out of budget, so time to build a caravan. I ended up drawing what i thought would look good on the floor at the shop, its based of a size of caravan i was looking at buying Worked out how much steel i would need and worked a price on everything else and got the go ahead. let the fun begin. ideally would like up and running before the end of Feb and the very latest March
  3. Hey team! well last night myself, Shonesy, Dolan and Jemma went on a bit of a mission to go aquire my next project that we are both rather excited about as it was the deal of a century. Tis a rather original 1963 12foot starliner caravan! so pine as these things are pretty hard to find now and although very neglected this one seems to have pretty good bones. anyway pictures first - So it has sat in this resting place for the last 8 years, and in another resting place for several years prior. The cool things about these starliners is the entire top half is a solid fibreglass shell, so they dont leak! thus the bottom alloy half and framing doesnt rust!. The fibreglass has a few patches in it, and will need a new gel coat on it. The chassis is very surface rusty, but i will try repair this with the floor out but shell on, as apparently it is incredibly easy to break the fibreglass shell when removing it. it has a rather whack but cool duratorque suspension setup that keeps it relativley low, with drum brakes and a what cable break setup. the interior lining is also pretty degraded as it is a spray on foam type that is all brittle and cracking and falling off. most people rip it out but i have seen someone use carpet underlay and "solo" what ever that is, dont know how they have done it, but this is it here - anyway back to our van, our plans are for a re line, tidy up the cupboards, new gelcoat and paint, all to the original colours as factory etc, probs try find some sweet brown / burnt orange retro lino for the floor, get it real tidy, and then use the hell out of it, will look sweet behind the triumph. only thing i am gutted about is the sweet starliner hatch in the roof is missing, and has been replaces with some shitty broken wooden one. can you all please do me a favour and head to the starliner nz facebook page, there is a competition post to win a bunch of parts, can you please like my comment "blake jones" so i can win the shit out of some stuff. please and thankyous, line here - http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=423583487844790&set=gm.1064454596920661&type=3&theater anyway more photos for the thread -
