Pretty much tell all my customers to run 95+ in their boats. I dunno if/what they've changed in 91 over the past few years but we have noticed an increasing amount of running problems on 91 fuel and one of our main customers who happens to work for the AA said he's noticed the same thing. Dunno if it's a quality control issue or what but it's to the point where I can run an engine up here at work and know if they've got 91 octane in it cos it runs like it's old gas (even if it's fresh). Slight ling post but I run at least 95 octane in anything that burns fuel personally.
Buy a tesla/leaf, electricity all tastes the same.

Can you hear the injectors clicking? Also pull plugs after a good crank and see if they're dry or wet. It may be a newschool engine but the basics still apply, fuel/air/compression/spark.
-
If it's pre 95 with the grey square diagnostics port just turn the ignition on and short out the two far left pins and the check engine light will flash codes. 3 seconds is about the time it takes to run through the start map so from there it can be something along the lines of air flow meter or something. Could also be a dodgy IAC valve. Can you keep it running with throttle or is there just nobody home at all?

I was going to ask this too.
Ever since I was a small boy and we got our first boat valvoline was all we used. I run it in my 50cc too. Should I dump it out and buy something else???
Edit, of my scooter
We've been telling people to dump it, yeah. Too much of a coincidence to have so many blown engines all running the same oil. Maybe if it's some really old stuff you've had lying around it'll be good (we used to recommend it to customers), but anything that's been purchased in the last 18 months I'd say ditch it.

There's only one thing left to do...

What's wrong with Valvoline oil? I run the xd50 but my grandfather ran Valvoline from the 70s on
We used to recommend it back in the day. Now it blows engines up. Dunno what they changed but it's causing us (and most other dealerships) a lot of problems at the moment.

Is that cos modern lead free shit?
Seems to have gotten worse in the last few years for sure, but the official fuel shelf life is 3 months according to BP. But then chuck that in a plastic tank in the sun with an open vent and you can halve it again.
Best thing for your outboard is to run fresh and preferably 95 octane fuel, and quality oil (read: Not Valvoline).
Glad to see you got it ripping, sorry I didn't see the post before hand.

I hear that outboard mechanics make the most profit off of "fixing" engines when the owner just had old fuel
Mostly because I have old guys argue with me that the fuel is "fresh enough" and insist there's something wrong with the motor that needs fixing. Trust me, old fuel is a fucking headache on outboard motors.

I was thinking of maybe heading through to Ellerslie for a burger tonight. Seems like this Wednesday in particular would be a great day for it.

Yeah sorry that was my bad, haha. I saw the headlights and then didn't pay any attention beyond that as I was walking over! They look damn similar when all you see is two bright lights and a bonnet.

By some form of amazing coincidence I was planning to grab a burger from that very eatery around the same time, I was even thinking of inviting a friend of mine who recently purchased his very first (and very oldschool) car. Would be hugely coincidental to run into you fine gentlemen (and ladies) at around this time.

how to check for leaking injectors on subaru motor
in Tech Talk
Posted
Turn key to on position so pump primes up with in line fuel pressure gauge and see if pressure drops quickly or holds for a while? If pressure drops quickly then check fuel injectors. Could also see if any of the plugs are more fouled than others I suppose but this might only show up if an injector really is leaking bad.
