Any BMW i3 knowledge/experience on here?

Been to view and drive a 2014 22kWh with range extender this morning. Interesting experience. Nice drive, if very different from anything I’ve driven before. Certainly goes well. Electric range fairly dismal (100kms ish) but that’s mostly enough and there’s the REX as plan B.

Well spec’d and turns out the vendor is my sons former apprenticeship supervisor (good people)

Would replace the Wifs 2004 Audi TT…. Decisions decisions….. The step up in complexity is somewhat intimidating!

I'd just be extremely cautious of the range. If it says 100 this may be 70 to 100 real world, and this maybe just enough to make it impractical for you.

I heard the previous BYD described as handling like a whale, so seems fitting to have moved through the ocean mammal list

I really don't mind its handling- I wouldn't have thought it was that bad- but previous daily's have been the last two generation of triton and a Colorado, so my perception will be biased.

I'd bloody hope a brand new Chinese EV was better than a 13 year old platform....

It won't be for reliability though, ASX are tanks.

Oh, my comment is not at all considering age of platform etc, only that the ASX was my other option :-)

Wait till the rust starts :geek:

have you heard rust is a problem on them?

Its a lease vehicle, so only with us for three years and comes at no cost to me so limited fucks either way.

I still firmly back my decision to get the EV over an ASX (which, no offence if you have one, are absolutely terrible)

Did you previously comment about not getting expected range? Could failed bearings add drag? I'd hope it's just a bad batch of bearings and the next lot don't fail that soon. Is it too much torque for the bearings to handle :p

Did it make any noise? Could the hub flange be at risk of separating and you have the wheel/s fall off?

I doubt they could add that much drag. I have heard a bit of a squeel (which wasn't that loud) but turned up the radio. Its a brand new vehicle so shouldnt have any issues lol

The car is FWD and its the rear wheel bearings that have failed. Regardless, they shouldn't experience any torque load- If it does its already fucked.

  6. Its a model D because it Dicks all over my BYD. that thing has got more range!

By the way, my BYD went in for its first service today. Its done 4300km. I could see it on the hoist and everyone standing around with hands on hips, then wheel came off, things got inspected with the torch etc.

They are going to call me back soon to install new rear wheel bearings. After 4300km.

    4300km!

  7. Jesus christ, no.

I know a bloke who got one for his sheep farm and it was an absolute piece of shit.  it had CONSTANT issues with reliability and was a real source of tension within the farm as the old boy could have spent a little more and got something actually usable. Their vehicle was literally breaking after weeks of careful farm use (by people who don't abuse stuff)

I am pretty sure this brand had some good PR done by a farming or ATV website within NZ and they wanked on about how it was made for NZ conditions and designed here bla bla, but in reality it is simply the cheapest of Alibaba machines together with some excellent marketing.

    In conclusion- trust your gut.

    edit:

nah seriously. Fuck these guys. They are preying on people. They are deceitful and do other well meaning nz companies a disservice.

Also, what have you got your rubber pumped up to? I'd want to be seeing 40psi cold as a starting point.

Kiwis seem to be really shy about getting tire pressure high enough - I used to have my Skodas and the wife's Niro come back from a service where they'd lowered the pressures down to about 32 and left a note on the paperwork saying "All tire pressures excessively high".  Not if they read the fucking manual...

hey good question! I have not checked, will do that tonight. Tire pressures will be as delivered.

  9. have discovered in the vehicle settings, energy manager, there is a toggle to change the range display from STANDARD to DYNAMIC. This changed the displayed range this morning from 320 to 270. 270 is much more accurate but still wrong by about 90km.

Odd... Can you pull up anything on the screen that shows where the power is going?

I might need to dig deeper but I think the all time average is saying 17kw per 100km with no mention of accessory use etc.

50/17 is nearly 300km so the numbers just don't make sense- unless the aircon / heater is using 4kw an hour.

    Oh, forgot to mention.

Andrew Simms has replied today and said that they are taking this up with byd NZ

Haven't hit advertised range in the 6 yet, but you can see the difference in range/consumption on the warmer days we've been having.

Book says 484 Km, but Americans are pulling close to 400 miles with the heat they've had over summer.

What kind of driving do you do though? These are the other way around to ICE, so hauling arse around town and up to about 80kph is seriously efficient, open road not so much.

I do a mix of open road and town driving, however it doesn't seem to matter what im doing, the range is always shit, lol.

  12. Right. Does anyone here with an EV get anywhere close to the estimated kms remaining (as indicated on the dash) and are you getting anywhere close to the range shown within the sales literature.

Cant remember if i have mentioned this here, but I have put serious effort into getting atto3 to return anywhere close to stated range and it is absolutely futile. No town driving or open road driving is going to get you close. You would literally have to do 340km downhill or drafting behind a truck to get close or maybe cook yourself with no heater/AC on (or something, i don't know)

As far as I am concerned the literature is a lie and the *in ideal conditions* statement is referring to conditions that legitimately cannot be attained.

I have been questioning the sales yard (BYD andrew simms) and am not getting any feedback worth a damn.

Also worth noting, they no longer sell this 50kw standard range model in nz.

bit pissed as 250km range is proving to be *just*enough to be a fucking pain in the ass.
