I forgot to include injectors in the first post too.

So some of your have seen my new project shitbox. (Which wont be getting worked on for a wee while yet) as its a blank canvas in terms of drivetrain, id like to start a discussion about the real world costs associated with building a fast car.
Engine aside, (theres eleventy billion "debates"on teh webs about which engine is "best") things like fuel system, Engine management, loom, turbo, intercooler, transmission/converter, diff etc.
All of these things are needed irespective of which donk is slung in the engine bay. Youtube is awash with videos of engines making massive power, many seemingly for not much money.
What are some real world costs to build a rocketship?
Discuss.

A long time ago just before either parked it up to go overseas, the speedo stopped working. I always thought it was the dodgy speedo drive I modified. Turns out it was the cable
Spend too much time wound off the end of the speedo?

That guy was @forced wasnt he?

Thanks Alex.
Without spamming up the actual build thread, heres the back story.
Our cat is elderly. She annoys me, and was never the favourite. (Other cat is long deceased) but she is a loved part of our family.
However her fur goes everywhere. If i take off my work clothes, and put on garage clothes, she'll lie on them and make them all hairy. And her fur collects in tufts all over the carpet/on my norsewear socks.
I dont want another cat.
I told her i bought another datsun. Theres a garage space at mums for it.
Obviously it looks like shit to a non car person. So she blew up and over reacted like a dick. Purely as an excuse to force her will of getting two kittens once Oscar finally falls off the perch. (Yes our girl cat has a boys name, thats another sharn)
Anyway,
I need to do a three hour mish to go pick it up. At this point, its finding a weekend where both the seller and i arent busy.
Then try and get a non rolling car off the trailer, and into the garage.
New years day 2023 i heled a friend move a datsun shell, and when i found the mechanical load limit of my once infallable guns i tore my bicep tendon. Subsequently ill be employing a greater degree of care/different methodology at that time.
I havent seen them, but the seller tells me the guy who tubbed it out also welded the bonnet and front gaurds together. With a veiw to making a tilt front.

GREAT SUCCESS!
Id rather be set on fire that own one of these. But theres something oddly satifying about this thread. You must be pretty stoked with the outcome!
You might say its a Stella effort!

The ones on the rear are what my kart ran when i was a kid/when it was first built. (When it ran a 3.5hp Kawaski) it was only 1wd. Once we smoked the first one, we ran ones like the front o the driven wheel. Brcause they are so soft, the 5hp shreaded them with ease.

Are those 4" wheels?
My old kart ran 4" tyres with a 5hp briggo.
It could wear a brand new tyre (like that ones on the front) down far enough to pop in less that one tank of gas.......

Wicked!!!!!
Damn those cicadas are loud up here eh!
Most excellent update!

Because im a fuckwit who hoards projects instead of finishing them. I was offered this car at a price too cheap to refuse. Before i had kids, i did a bit of drag racing. Its an addiction which can only be cured by poverty. However (depending on the chassis) race modifications quickly compromise a cars streetability. This particular example may not be able to be registered again. (Untill i collect it and see if a plate and tag are amongst the parts or not)
People active in the Christchurch datsun scene may remember seeing it before. A bloke started building it with burnout car in mind. At that time he had an SR20 which had come out of the rayglass datsun. He sold that sperately when he moved the body on to another mate in Oamaru. (From whom im buying it) unfortunately the 9" and mags arent included. (For what i paid, im not suprised)
Anyway, heres some potato photos.

My prediction is, road tax revenue will decrease. (Even just from losing GeStapoTax on the fuel levy/i bet the drty cunts change gst on rucs) then theyll say people are cheating the sytem, and mandate Eroads.

Youd fucking hope motorcycles pay fuck all rucs.
Oh your 110cc postie bike wears out the road, you pay the same as a 2T 4wd

You've seen the bike engined Leaf?
How about a generator hooked straight to the charging port? A man of your ability/ingenuity should be able to pull it off...
I believe they have some fail safe that means they wont drive when theyre charging. To stop mongs driving off while plugged in.
-
I might do both.
Do you think it will attack the aluminium manifold/thermostat housing?
-
Not likely.
Dads cousin would like to see it running again. Very unlike dad, he doesnt want a bar of it. Reportedly some other Barry has expressed interest in it. the tractors owner would be 80 ish. It was ran when parked. Although it appears some penis fingers been playing with it.

Oooh,
Dads cousun has a super ancient one of those! First tractor on the west bank of the Wairau river.
Presently in a barn thats collapsed.

Yeah but rusty was a mong.
Do they really work?
-
And i wasnt kidding about those rust repairs. Id honestly forgotten how rust fucked it was before Josh weaved his magic. I actually felt disgusted with myself for letting a perfectly good car deteriorate so badly.

Somebody tell me whats best to clean my cooling system. Long ago someone suggested white vinegar?
-
^sage advise.
A modern engine (efi) will give excellent fuel economy, and cold starting reliablity. However this adds an additional element of complexity as the fuel system requires extra upgrading too. If youre going to pay for cert, will the improvement gained warrant the extra cost?

I went to mums earlier, and had to see this poor old thing in the flesh again. thought id use this thread as a place to write my do do list of things that need doing.
Three and a bit years, and ill be 50. Be nice to have it on the road before then.
Cooling system flush.
Despite the engine being rebuilt, some IHC left it sitting for ages with no corrosion inhibitor in it. Im going to refit the old radiator, pull the thermostat and flush everything with an as yet unknown agent. (Feel free to share your remedy of choice)
I sure as hell dont want to be putting any of that crud in my flash new rad.
Power steering box.
Long ago, the box was rekitted, and modified to "firm feel" specs. (Basically US police care spec) Because valuent power steer is impossibly light.
However something was put together wrong. And once i fitted the power steering pump, and had new hoses made, the wheel just cranked all the way to right, the instant the engine was started. Ive previously tried to adjust the valve (theres a sliding valve body used to find the centre of the two valve biases) but even at full travel this doesnt correct it. So the box needs to be removed, and sent back to dads for remedial surgery.
Exhaust needs finishing.
The pipes presently end at the diff. (Twin 2.5" pipes) the bloke who did the exhaust on my 620 ute (no thread for that sorry) recently build a whole new 2.5" Mandrel bend system for Dads SBM stroker hardtop. So in the interest of saving time, i swooped, and called dibbs on his old diff hoop pipes. Valiants are eye wateringly tight through here. (Even more so once the mandatory height reduction has been carried out) so these will be resused. (As its not an all out performance engine, being press bend rather than manrel wont matter a pinch of shit) my mate who did dads new pipes actually commented kudos to whoever bent that pipe, because its such a small place to fit through. Ill have to make a final determination after the pipes are finished, but i absolutely hate the way the mufflers sound. Theyre hedman turbo flow ones. Theres a high probability that these will be replaced with straight through ones.
Trans cooler.
I need to have a new treans cooletrmade to match with my new radiator. The bloke who made that said its no trouble at all to whip one up.
Body work,
In finding this thread, i had to look at all the rust repairs Josh did all over again. Fuck it was rusty bitch. Josh did an amazing job. When he finally told me to come take my car away, the only thing left is the bonnet, and the inside of the front guards. Ive got another bonnet which is repairable. I can buy new bottoms, but the rest will have to be crafted from scratch.
So theres an update that isnt really an update. But i have this list to remind me.

Barts new kittens (and another pile of rusty unfinished Datsun project car)

She was even more fluffy that oscar.
