  1. Been tackling a couple of the doors now. Waiting to buy a bigger/better belt sander to grind all these welds down as the flappy disk I have is very terrible and hugely inaccurate. Not aiming for perfection here as its only inside of doors and nothing special. 2. Got told to just spray it with CRC afterwards, so far so good
  3. Doors got blasted, about as bad as I thought they'd be but all 4 doors had a generous amount of bog in the bottom half of them. and then quite a few hust holes underneath. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Got them in epoxy primer though which is a very nice feeling. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Started to mark out where I need to cut out the rust for some patches on the doors. only 1 door had a good outer skin (R/F) but the inside of it is fairly toast. 4. So I've been chipping away where I can. So while the doors were at the sandblasters getting done I turned the car around in the shed and got to focusing on the rear of the car. Emptied the boot of all the door parts and started stabbing the ginger spots until something happened. poked my head in and under then inside of the boot to find some ugly rust around the left just under the rear window area. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr and to my naïve dismay it looks like someone has been here before too. At least it isn't lead.. Decided to wait on that until I get the rear window taken out. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr also started taking off the ancient sound deadning in the boot area just in case I decide to get it blasted too. it would look nice and clean all smooth and repainted here too.
  5. Used my labour day wisely just doing some small things. started with sandblasting another (2/3) of my 14" SSR Formula Mesh faces with my 100L supercheap auto sandblasting cabinet. Definitely not a fun thing to blast. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Then I used my 3L ultrasonic cleaner (using Evapo-rust as a solution) for about 27mins to clean the hardware. Not perfect but the replacement bolts I tried were slightly too wide at the head for the face and I didn't want to drill them all out so decided to reuse the original hardware. even if they're a bit stink. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Then finally I blasted all the hinges. Not to perfection as I'm not that fussy for this part. Then I put it in epoxy primer using my new Iwata spraygun with a 1.8tip. My first time trying out this set up and I'm happy with how it turned out. 6. Fully stripped all 4 doors for sandblasting the whole doors minus the outside skin. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Started with the drivers door, broke the clip that holds the mechanism rod, (managed to save only one in total for all 4 doors) unpicked the lower half of the sides and bottom edge of the door skin. nothing toooo major on this one. The inner window channel is extremely rusty. must've had next to no rust prevention from factory. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr next was the front passenger door: looks like someone has been here before. there is some evidence of a rust repair here. looks somewhat recent as is hasn't rusted away too much or doesn't look too nasty. hasn't been too destroyed thankfully. the bottom end corner of the door is very rusty. Will definitely need to make a patch here after blasting. Definitely worse than the drivers door. Right Rear door: More evidence of a previous rust repair. although thankfully is all pretty good and one of the better doors. Left Rear door: Again another previous rust repair. sucks to see but again nothing too major. will need to make a patch along the bottom as its thin along the bottom seam on some spots. took the 1/4 window out and there was a good bit of weet-bix rust that fell out from underneath. blaster should fix this. 7. So maybe about 6 months ago I unpicked the boot and bonnet skins and had them sandblasted and etch'd. I plan to use epoxy primer on as much as I can from now on. Boot and bonnet frames are the worst parts of this lot. savable but going to be a good test for my skills remaking the shape on the edge of the frame. Plan to do this later into the restoration when my patch making becomes a bit better. Will focus on easier stuff until then. Wish there was a way to keep this lovely patina. 8. Right so here I have this 1980 TT133 Toyota Corona. 180odd thou kms on the clock, pretty rusty but nothing too major. Just got rid of my 1981 4AGE carbureted KE70 Toyota Corolla to fund this and my set up, and to "fully" focus on this. The plan is to give it a medium ish restoration. Sure, that's subjective but I don't want to leave too many stones unturned but also want to be able to drive this sooner rather than later. (lets see how long that idea lasts) The good: The car is 99% complete and very untouched. Something that makes me personally so at ease and happy to work with. makes these jobs so much easier. (even has a nice photo of the car being a few years old too!) interior is in very good condition too. Apart from the classic giant crack in the sun baked dash. The bad: rust rust rust. main bad spots are in the firewall, bottom of doors and guards. most the normal stuff. underside need a full blast. All the suspension/brakes needs a good overhaul too. Has the original 2T engine in there but I do have a spare 3SGE (I hastily ripped out of an altezza I had for all of 5 mins) that I plan to put in there for a nice refreshing improvement. End goal is to make it a nice low and reliable old school cruiser/head turner that I can take out on weekends and even daily if need be. Untitled by Emmett Westwood, on Flickr
