    Here is the break-in procedure:

    - 5.5qts Rotella or Delo 15-40w Diesel Oil
    - one bottle of Zinc additive(any brand is fine, Comp cams and Joe Gibbs have good ones)
    - Pre-lube motor by spinning oil pump with an oil pump primer until oil comes out the rockers on both sides.
    - Temp may be 80-95 as you run it in.  Keep the radiator cool by spraying with a garden hose since the car is not moving and has no air going through the radiator. Although those Spal racing fans might be enough.
    - Start engine and run for 15-30min at 1200-1500rpm and vary the speed every 5-10min. The start giving it more revs changing every 10 mins for a further 30 mins.   Important to not stop and start the motor when doing this unless there is a major problem. Expect smoke coming off the motor, that is the paint getting hot-will go away after about 10min.
    - Set initial timing to‎ 12 degrees(3rd mark on the balancer) at idle(700rpm idle). Total timing should be in the 28-32 degree range w/ no vacuum plugged in.
    - Change oil after break in, use same type Rotella/Delo 15-40w.

That's it, hit the road and enjoy! No crazy burnouts till after the first oil change, then you can beat the snot out of it. Keep in mind, Nailheads do not like to Rev, consider 5000-5500 rpm max. This is because of the valve train.

  2. Im about ready to fire up the old worked nailhead.

Time to start thinking about break in oil. Every person you talk to has there own opinions on the subject and some have even there own witches brews they make up when first fireing up a rebuilt or crate engine.

Interested in what you all use and may be recommend.

I already have some Edelbrock zinc additive I plan to squirt in the mix.

    https://www.edelbrock.com/edel-high-performance-zinc-additive-to-add-wear-protection-to-any-motor-oil-1074.html

Looking at running 15-40 oil in it once its all running. Penrite as it has extra zinc.

Was looking at just throwing in a bottle of the additive to the normal oil but see Penrite do a Running in oil.

    Any one ever used it?

Even better ever used it in an old V8?

    What do you all do/use?

    cheers

Vw 1.8t, same size as the 4age but factory turbo, longitudinal setup, cheap as to buy, easy to wire up ecu, adapters and bell housings for them are available

Ohh. Hadn't even thought vw. What's the 1.8 out of?

  4. Cheers guys.

I'm totally open to ideas, feedback and to hear people's opinions.

Cars a very straight roadworthy little vehicle that's rust free. A true survivor many would call it. Only a few owners one being a nursing home from new to the last old time who owned it and did it up then never used it.

Missus brought it home with a big grin proud as punch. Told me the history then informed me we will chop its roof, add fade away  fenders, skirts and drop it to make a mini sled.

Current warrant runs out end of September so that's start date. Body work won't be to tricky. Drive train won't be too bad once I get the engine choice sorted.

Can't imagine it will be anywhere near as tricky as the Hudson I'm doing

That build sheet Nominal is ace. Cheers mate.

The 4AGE setups. U have to cut up the firewall or floor?

    Good info ajg193 thanks man.

Have seen dis relocation setups for 20v. They make much more power and need much more building than say a 16v to turbo.

Although I don't mind chopping stuff and a bit of work I'm not to keen to cut up the firewall if poss.

On cellphone and won't be back on a decent device for a few days to really go over the thread.

  5. For an upcoming project I'm wanting to use a 4AGE as it's small and I read will fit in the engine bay well whilst delivering the fun up n go I'm after for my missus new grocery getter. ( 56 split window Morris minor coupe)

    RWD north south.

    Manual 5 speed.

Turbo or at least option to turbo down the track.

Seems the old north south set ups are getting harder to find these days. Have also read other than 4AGZE that came supercharged they can't handle the boost a turbo will give it.

Looking about I see many fwd to rwd conversion kits for the 20v setups.

    Anyone converted fwd to rwd?

Once done dimensions the same as a standard rwd setup?

Turbo setups.. best block to use? 16v, silver top, black top etc.

Any 20v come turbo or supercharged and easy way to spot em?

Have read about ribs or something... where I'm looking and how many should I spot for a turbo friendly block?

Been offered a east west engine for some beers need to pop around to check it out.

Anything I should be aware of when looking at pulled engines? What gives out on them?

And finally any one here put one in a morrie minor or can put me in contact with anyone who has?

    Cheers

had a look on the cert website and I think I should be ok, I can bring my exhaust out the side of my cruiser behind the drivers door? this is just a rough position for reference. theres no opening windows behind the drivers door etc. also would like to weld the exhaust hangers to the body mounts that come off the chassis, I can't see that being a problem? thanks

    Nope.

Need to be like half a foot or something from an opening/ behind rear passenger seats.

  7. Hey ya

Im half way through a 49 Hudson custom project.

    Coming up to the electrics.
Have an American Autowire Highway 22 kit for the bulk of the wiring.

Looking at upgrading the headlights from the old sealed beam 7" jobbies to say LED if possible.
Keeping the original buckets and outer chrome trim ring but replacing everything else (lens/reflector/bulb/housing). Getting lens and reflector suited to LEDs.

    Im looking at using:
    www.vintagecarleds.com/shop/7-inch/vc4000-ultimate-kit/
    or
    www.vintagecarleds.com/shop/7-inch/vc3500-classic-kit/

Look old but are made for LED. FAQ say they are E-Code etc.

I know there are issues around HID conversions and non white or amber bulbs but im unsure if there are any about LED.

Thought I better check in before I go much further.

Is there a LVVTA fact sheet pdf?

Anyone know of any cert issues etc?

    Cheers

Was about to say those boosters a pretty fancy bit of kit.

Drove a good customers Manual 210 Chevrolet with a 9", 454 and "normal" disc brakes - with "GM" single pot calipers - nothing out of the ordinary disc about the same as a XF falcon, and it stopped like it was fitted with Wilwoods and 17" rotors. Was extremely impressed with them. Dont they run a massive line pressure something like 2000psi?

Apparently his was one of the first cars in NZ to have this setup and the LVVTA weren't very familiar with it.

    recommended 1500psi.

For the PS pump I have a PSC pro touring pump. They are mostly know in the extreme offroad/rock crawly community for tough, well made and top line components but are also making some damn nice circle track and street rod parts.

    pk1150h-a.jpg

three port reservoir and Type II TC pump that is rated 1500psi or greater. Hand built in the states and dyno tested.

    http://www.pscmotorsports.com/pro-touring-type-ii-pump-kit-for-rack-pinion-w-hydroboost-black-anodized-aluminum-reservoir.html

Wanted a small pump to help de-clutter the engine bay but needed something that would put out 1500psi or greater all day. Want the focus to be the old Nailhead not the accessories when the hood is up.

I went a tad overboard with the brakes. What with 6pot wilwoods and hydraboost.
