Tell him to fuck off. He didn't inspect before buying and if you described it accurately you have no issues. How could you foresee it was going to need some work? Plus it's 17 years old FFS. The wanker should be asking his mechanic why he spent 1200 fixing it if it's such a piece of shit.

Taylor Automotive Grafton. Good guys and stand behind their work. I had the engine in my Statesman rebuilt and it started leaking through the rear main which turned out to be a faulty seal. They had to pull out the engine again to do the repair and nothing was a problem. Highly recommended.

Hi line has the sunrise dash whereas the lowline has the rectangular dash.

Highline or lowline?

Depends how rusty it is, the one inside that is. 2-4K max. It would need to be pretty well rust free and a good interior to score 5-6k. The mechanicals are easy to sort.

Bloody pond scum see something nice and have to wreck it.

It's a Saffa XY Fairmont GT. Turners sold it for 60k odd. Painted a horrible baby blue colour.

I'm going to put the gearbox together at Easter. It's all going into a standard Cortina 3 rail casing. 2000E ratios will give it a bit better drivability and the alloy bell housing, tailshaft housing and remote housing will save a few kilos over the old cast items as well. I need to sort the clutch and flywheel too so will probably run an Escort heavy duty clutch and diaphram pressure plate with a spacer on the release bearing to get all the clearances right. Nothing much to report on the body as there is a whole lot of panels away at the blaster and I'm waiting on some under wing strut kits as the old ones where really badly pitted so not worth saving. My NOS front rail arrived however the inner guards I was looking at sold for £1200 each!!!!!! So would have cost over 5K NZ landed!! Selling for that money I'd say they will end up on a Lotus Cortina rebuild.

Media beat up pimping some guy with a hard luck story. Definitely more to this than has been reported. He can always buy his car back when it goes up for auction...

That's a good idea using the clothesline to hang parts off to paint. My Mrs will be feral after she sees me doing it this weekend if it's not raining. Like the spring stretchers too bloody good idea

Went and had a look at the Cortina today and Greg has removed the front off it to reveal all the hidden bodywork. Lucky I bought a 4 door parts car before xmas as the body work has been dismantled on that to reveal a really clean original shell. So most of the front end will go on mine and the rear floor pan is going onto another 2 door. Both the front rails on mine had holes cut in from the wheel side and they used that to smash the rail straight, we'll sort of, and then welded a patch over it. It's not until you start pulling the body apart all the previous sins are exposed. This looked pretty good when I bought it with no real evidence of the weapons grade crap repairs underneath. It's going to be a minter when finished!

What: 1973 Statesman Deville
Why: Wanted a 70's Aussie V8 cruiser
How: Saw it on Trademe, put a bid on it and I ended up being the only bidder. It looked pretty straight and original in the pics so I spoke to the guy that was selling it and it turns out it had only 2 owners and had been sitting unused for 23 years. I made an offer sight unseen and he took it. It turned up a couple of weeks later and it was completely original and unmolested plus the only bit of rust was the size of a 50 cent piece in the bottom of the right rear guard. I sent it to Sterlings and got the brakes fully rebuilt and did all the wheel bearings. Replaced the windscreen which had a stone chip from many moons ago. Took it to Pit Stop in Penrose to get dual exhausts put on it and they fucked it up so ended up taking it to Geddes who ripped it off and redid it and made a primo job on it. Also put headers on it at the same time. Then I put some 14x8 Tridents on it to give the classic 70's look.
When: 2012
What's Next: Just had the engine fully rebuilt as I got sick of the oil leaks and needed to convert the heads to unleaded anyway. Next is to repaint it in the original chateau mauve and cruise in it

Anyone know what's involved with changing the dash speakers and head unit in a 04 Hiace? Still all factory so want to put some new speakers and head unit in. I have had a quick look but can't see many screws for access
