Cool little car, and awesome that it's been vtec converted, i bet it'll go like throwing a brick really hard. They rusted really badly in the UK, so hopefully yours isn't too much worse than what you have found.

Has anyone linked you to this yet? i found it when i was looking into the SMX myself https://www.motoroids.com/features/with-a-cabin-that-encouraged-love-making-the-honda-s-mx-wanted-you-to-see-the-letter-m-as-an-e/

Yes! I do enjoy the story behind them. A literal bone-zone mobile. The purpose built shaggin' wagon. I was looking at picking up an S-MX long before this came into my life as I'd always wanted a 4WD version but life decided to make me experience the 2WD VTEC version instead and I'm not complaining.

Here's some info to help id the cams https://www.ff-squad.com/tech/temp/VtecCams.htm

B16a and type r cams go good in the B20s

It'll go way harder if you can get it tuned, some accords (and us market integras) have a separate auto trans computer so you can get a tunable ecu (chipped if you want to call it that)

Epic thank you! I've trawled through the S-MX owners group on FB to see the old owners posts and see if I can drum up any more info. Not a huge amount more but did find it's running a P72 ECU - had originally been running a chipped P28 but that wouldn't shift the auto box. I look forward to getting deeper into things soon.

cool car, hopefully you can rescue it!

that cylinder head is probably 1st gen B16a (the cam cover is anyway)..

    P30 - B16a

P72 - b18c black top (i don't think its one of those unless the inlet manifold has been modified to fit)

    P73 - B18cr

My lord this is a large rabbit hole to go down.

So, the head says PR3-1. Date stamping says '95. Looks like the -1 denotes where the head was cast as there are PR3-1, -2, -3 and -4. I've spent 15 minutes reading the internet and I either definitely have a B16 head or it's an ITR head which supposedly was a factory ported head. Depending on where I read I definitely have the first one or definitely have the second. I'm a bit too smooth brain with Honda's to really know otherwise yet and searching through 14 year old forum posts gets tedious.

I did find a picture of the cams that went into it.

This post has been open for another 25 minutes since I wrote the last bit and from what I can tell one of the main differences between B16 and ITR is dual valve springs on the exhaust side, which from another potato 00's photo (bare in mind I haven't ever been inside one of these engines) it seems to have.

At the end of the day it runs and is staying in there so I'm not sure it matters entirely but either way it's always nice to be sure of things when it's not a build you watched happen. Official summary is it's definitely not the head it came with from the factory and it makes the car nang hard.

Anyway - time to finish sorting the wheels out so it can get back on it's own feet again and some basic maintenance can begin.

Yeah thats the ones! It runs and drives after replacing the fuel pump and plugs - I drove it to the current hoisting spot. So thats a positive.

I've been given the above codes to cypher through and will hunt on the car in the next couple of days as it's not with me right now. Appreciate the heads up!

  4. USA never had a beast mode. But being in freedom units mode meant the MPH limit was ever so slightly higher than the KPH limit. (32mph being 51.5KPH)

They did have one at HQ with the 'limits removed' that would do nearly 70kph for a while but as the battery got lower the speed got lower too. Battery life disappeared through pretty quick also. They were very strict with it and wouldn't even let other staff really ride it, was for R&D only and I'm unsure if it's even still around. Rumours are a more powerful one is finally in the works but being designed for postal service.

  5. Excuse the slightly clickbait thumbnail but I just released a buying parts in Malaysia video. If you owned an NBC110 this street would house nearly any part you could ever imagine including go fast parts.

Highly recommend a stop there if anyone is in Kuala Lumpur. Only 15 minutes by Taxi from the Petronas towers.

That chap is coming on my bike trip soon. Chris. I nearly put my back out helping him load that onto a flatdeck 4X4 HIGHlux with a ramp that was far too short. The things people do for the A&P show. He's a legend and makes gears and cogs out of large pieces of billet. One of the few left in the country doing it and like many niche industries can't find anyone to take up the learning and such. So when he calls it quits that'll be another no longer doing it.

Anyway - I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing him choose a tiny motorcycle to sit on for 10 days of punishment in Asia.

I filmed a couple of his other small bikes and they're on the channel. The MT50 is his and the CT110 with a lifan swap is his.

  7. I've ridden a few goldwings and at one point got to spend a decent amount of time with a Goldwing Trike. Whilst it was dead stock I still would take that thing for a blat every chance I could. Blitzing the throttle in a full lock turn lit up the wheels with ease and I would proceed to piss a large amount of cheese.

Can't even imagine how cool it will feel to drive this thing when it's together! You make magic happen mate. Seriously impressive.

  8. Easily the coolest bike video I've watched in a long time. Honda produced their own mini doco in the 60's called THIS IS HONDA - it was just released in English.  It shows the production processes of a Honda C102 from 1962 - including a couple of race shots and the opening shot is every model available at the time, all on the same track. It's quite cool. Worth the 34 minutes.

What a strange watch, it's like those hours between dinner and bed time don't exist.

I think it's the bit where the carb isn't tuned properly so it hesitates between 6-9k RPM.

    Hey whats the time?

    '3 thousand RPM'

I recently saw a JDM vehicle with an LCD display of some anime girl whos assets increased in size and jiggliness the more furiously you drove.  I don't know what the display was for, could've been the radio or some kind of piggyback controller.

I'm just saying.... If complexity is free...

Similar but kinda not. The dude that posted it makes tonnes of custom displays for the digital dash he uses.

Agree the price of flogged out NBC's has gotten out of control.

Also agree that its odd how all of the more modern Honda 125cc bikes go for like $5-7K, and then CB125F is like less than half the price. I assume the groms and monkeys are made in china like the CB's too? CB's must be extra chinesey.

    Thailand for the Grom's/Monkeys etc.

Yamaha YS125 if available or similar would do it. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1032763724580599/

Have ridden a heap of Sur Rons and they are fun but have their limitations if used in a commuting sense.

Slightly related but not really - the Indonesian Honda factory is going through a snapping frame scandal at the moment. Whoops. Luckily we don't get any of them here. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/honda-esaf-frame-rusty
