Nearly done with the wheels for the stug, just need to find that last bit of motivation.

As we're nearing the end of construction on her, what is the best practice to weathering? does one finish the paint and then do a gloss coat and then do decals? followed up by weathering and then a sealing coat in matt gloss?

    Cheers

Isnt it something stupid like gloss coat, decals (better base for them to snuggle down on), then matt varnish, weathering then another dose of matt?

    All sounds a bit convoluted.....

That does seem to be the 'correct' way to do it, but I've never had a decal fall off a matt painted finish yet. It all sounds a bit "Emperors new clothes" to me.

Surely you'd start losing detail lumping all that paint on. Is there not something called decal fix or similar ?

You could always get masks for the markings & airbrush them on....

If you feel like going back to pleb-spec with a brush, a lot of Japanese armour was painted with brooms...

That way you be historically accurate and it hides a lot of sins.

Would I use a full size broom or a 1/35th scale one ?

  3. I've got a kit of my Chevy in the stash, maybe it should be next on the list. Kind of fancy doing it as it was after it had  finished the Alaska Highway & was just a yellow maintenance truck.

  4. Dredge.

Hello gang, I know that coming here for any kind of advice is silly, but here goes.

I've found a company here that can supply new galvanised tubs for my Hilux from Thailand. They're not cheap, but the car doesn't owe me much after all these years.

Problem is, they can only get 2WD ones. They can supply 4WD repair patches that I could weld in but they're over 25% extra on the price.

So, do I suck it up and spend the cash or do I get the bed & a pair of 2WD front wings for that full on '70's sticky out tyre look ?

Can't help thinking Ella Forrest probably isn't a bloke.

I'm no understandy much, but why does Ms Forrest not mention the model of his/her/its cars ?

    " The 1955" " The 1966"

Also, as a point of pedantry, since MOT's have been abolished for 40+ year old cars in the UK, imports DO NOT need an initial MOT test upon arrival. You just have to confirm that the vehicle is road worthy. Which they all are, obviously.

I seem to remember the Skyline being road worthy despite having shit brakes, crumbling tyres & perished top mounts.

I have decided I am too spastic to paint the rubber portions of the wheels for the stug, so will go and find a stencil to use instead.

    That is all.

You can do it ! I hate painting tank tyres but practice makes perfect, or at least passable.

That half finished Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind kit I've got stashed in the garage, must be taken from the regular Panzer IV mouldings as there's about a million parts on the sprues that aren't mentioned on the instructions and wouldn't work on what's supposed to be a mobile anti-aircraft battery.

^This. I have all 3 US Tamiya halftracks in stock. One comes with a spare cargo area floor which is not like any of the 3 variants. I may have to go on the model forum and ask but they can be such nobs sometimes.

  8. I've got about 8 waiting, but I'm sure there's 2 more I'll get soon. Or maybe 3. Probably going to give tanks a miss though (except for 1 more, or maybe 2) as they're mostly air in the middle.

I know Takom do some full interior tanks, including a Bergepanther. So maybe 3 then.

    Sigh.

Also "Bren gun carrier" ? Last time I looked it was a Churchill.

Are you building a stash up ? I know I have.
