  1. I was thinking of trying to 150 the 1000km day, Chch - Greymouth -Nelson - Blenheim - Chch. I would need to use the RG 3-6 tanks of fuel and 2 tanks of 2T depending on the average speed just not sure my legs can handle the cramped riding style. I figure middle of summer and try and average 80km/h less stops for total of 14-15 hours.

  2. Anyone in Christchurch help me with where and how to vin a 1981/2 Suzuki bike that they sold new as a dual purpose bike?

I understand about getting a JP declaration of ownership, and brake measurement etc but do i need some sort of confirmation they were sold? I found there is 1 other that has live rego

  3. I have owned a fair few different Holden models and like any marque, they all have good and bad points.

My view is that you buy for your intended purpose, eg. Everyday driver, cruiser, track, or show. My personal preference was performance although I would hardly call a 2250 Torana or a 186 HK in that category.

My current one is equal latest model I have owned and is a stock 2002 LS1 Ute, I had a 2002 SS and didn't like it as it was a bit gutless and also felt heavy although but compared to my 0-160km/h in 11 seconds 202ci Torana they all felt slow.

I have had FE, EH, HK, HT, HQ, HX Statesman, LH UC, LC, LJ, VB, VK,VL, VN, VR, VX and VU - some multiples and maybe some I forget and driven heaps of others including rental cars when visiting Oz,

Some of the early ones had rust issues with the EH probably the worse as mud collects in the back seam of the front guards.

The VB - VK were good handling but fairly under powered engines and not very economical but the 6 can be made to come alive and get 30% better economy with some mild fiddles. NZ model had a lower diff than OZ standard but the. The 8,s ran OK but needed better breathing. Rust around windscreen and boot seal, also if they had been used on shingle roads then the underside will have rust, hopefully only surface spots and can be fixed with underseal which helps reduce road noise as well. look for uneven shut lines as these cars are on classic reg now and may have multiple repairs done.

The early commodores run rings around the same year falcons in handling as the falcons were still using leaf rear spring and idler arm steering which made them vague and sloppy. The VB was the best as it had a thicker sway bar than the VC, VH, VK and the rack and pinion steering created an Oz car that shocked many people so they softened the suspension to give more sneeze factor.

Below is my 202 Black motor VK with stock bottom end with a decent head, cam and carbs that I built that could pull +7000rpm

  4. Damn I am pissed off. My new clutch cable went tight after about 20kms so only used it to stop and take off then checked it at the lunch stop and was going to take it off but found that when I pulled the cable to get it out of the handle the inner protection pulled out the end, no more clutch so made the call to return to Farlie and go home at least I got to enjoy 1 part of the ride. Have Fun.

nbc110, have replaced gearbox bearings, centrifugal clutch unit, cam chain and rollers.

loud whining noise when in gear.

was like that when i got it, ex Dunedin postie bike with about 65000 ks on it.

frame was broken at the swing arm pivot.

has been ridden into the ground in anger by a postie.

    @RUNAMUCK

drop the muffler off and you wont hear the whine

  6. I am fizzing about this ride, but I learnt my lesson with too much weight over the rear on the Porika Track so may buy a tank bag for this trip and use that + small backpack

My RGV got dusted off yesterday and I took it for a ride to make sure it was running ok, I still need to do the fork seals that blew after the Porika Pounding and maybe use a heavier oil.

Oh and gear the sucker down so 1st allows me to go slower in the muck and hills and I don't care if I lose 30-40km/h in top as the bigger tires already slow by 20-30 anyway.

So what is everyone's sleeping options, I was thinking either pair with someone in a room or just outside tent?

  7. Put the spare into the uncut frame to size it up while I was re-arranging the bikes today.

This will be a slow project as I have a few other things on the go as well, finally sorted the RG150 powervalve issues I think.

I used the spare part engine to mock it up and the biggest issue is gearbox. I have a dual ratio TC125 box or a TF125 Ag box.

  8. SVG is a bit of a freak tho, I feel sometimes he used to qualify down the order in supercars just to have fun :) But this was something very special, the price on his head just leapt up and even Murph's mate Ambrose would have been surprised.

wonder if a gsx 400 impluse unit would work then?

    colors should match up?

     https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/electrics/listing/4186198857

I will get this if nothing else will work - https://www.ecureplacement.com.au/ecu-product/suzuki-gsx550ef-32900-43400-bb1208-ecu-replacement/

But the reason it needed a new unit may need to be fixed unless it's already been done. I have read up the rectifier fails to regulate the voltage and sends 20v to the battery which boils the battery dry and some have been known to catch on fire, it overworks the alternator and then sends 2too much voltage to ignitor and lights(not working) similar to mopeds and small bikes when run without a battery to regulate the power.

The fix was to use a Honda CB250N rectifier/regulator apparently

It's of an age where it may also have a clutch cutout too.

Thanks, I tried that and the brake just in case.  I was able to download an app that removed the security on the PDF and printed some pages but nowhere

I had my doubts about the starter as the cover was off but I hot wired it and turns over.

I need someone with the skills to either fix my ignitor or build one for me, I will pay someone to get this going for me, ignitor/starter

    Haha, he seemed really helpful.

I'm not running that ignition system anyway. Was just for curiosity's sake. Turns out it was a modified Suzuki gsx unit.

Which you're welcome to have @holdenman if you think you'd use it.

I am interested but what was modified do you recall

The wiring diagram i have is not the best, low res from a free download. Anyone have one or a high res copy?

i added a battery and i get normal lights but nothing when i try and start it so i will test the starter by hot wire to make sure its ok, taped the stand sensor up in case it was causing it.

E R&D was bringing in generic boxes tweaking them and putting his own label on them.

I see aliexpress is doing the familiar mistake of calling it a CDI. It isn't. It's a TCI - Transistor controlled ignition. Capacitor discharge is quite different.

the E R & D is much heavier and sealed and was with some bits and pieces in a box while the ali special was hooked up to the bike erd1.thumb.JPG.b6fad577949b931f74975451af34cad0.JPG
