  1. I got the dual SU carbs and manifolds finally. I've gone through them, cleaned them all out, put em back together and they're ready to go on. Only problem is that looking at the cast iron exhaust manifold I noticed that the flange that attaches to the exhaust is cracked off. Does anyone know where I could take it to have a new one welded on? The entire exhaust might as well be replaced. Can anyone recommend a good exhaust/muffler place? Also would like to get some more old school looking tyres instead of the little tires it has on it right now. A thin whitewall would look pretty nice. Any recommendations on where to get decent tyres?
  2. Thanks Borgweiser. I don't really know much about ignition systems; dwell, vacuum advance etc... I've replaced the distributor and put in an electronic ignition. It is definitely running better but I can hear that the timing is off under load. How do I adjust the vacuum advance or check that it is correct? I've found a set of RIley carbs and manifold on TradeMe. Should be here soon. The chassis outriggers were rebuilt before I bought the car. New metal has been welded in.. Overall the car is running great. Everytime I fix something I hear something else that needs attention.
  3. So I put it all back together. Took me a few hours on Sunday. 10pm-1am were the only spare three hours that I had that day. Finished up the rest this morning, bled the brakes and fired her up! The difference is amazing! It's like a completely different car: smooth and quiet. I think it was struggling to turn those old bearings and the diff was making all kinds of noise when I let my foot off the throttle. Now it takes off and cruises like it should. It's like getting new bearings on your skateboard. You don't realize how much energy your wasting pushin those old rusty things around... you put in the new ones and BAM you're tearing up the whole park without even pushing! The only problem is this funny noise like a high pitched squeal that would happen at low speed. I figured out that it's the metal cap on the diff that covers the pinion seal. I think it's supposed to just tap onto the diff snug but I can't get it to grip. It just spins. I'll read up on that tonight. Maybe there is a clip. If anyone on the forum knows what it needs please let me know. The rear suspension is much better now. Sits a bit higher, not much, but the ass end doesn't swing around corners like it did before. I guess Snell Springs did a good job, they work, but when they told me they'd paint them I didn't realize that they would just spray over the rust. You'd think that for $240 bucks they could sandblast them real quick before they spray 'em. Oh well. I scratched some of the rust (and paint) off and resprayed it. Can't wait to put dual carbs on....
  4. Borgweiser, thanks, that's good to hear. All I ever hear about English cars is that you have to work on 'em every weekend. I don't mind doing that and I have been since I bought her. That is why she gets better every week. But I want to be able to pull a tiny caravan and drive up north or down to Hamilton whenever I want and know that I won't have to spend a few hours on the side of the road on the way. If you have any tuning tips or knowledge about putting an overdrive on it let me know. I'd much rather keep it stock (ish) but I'd rather have a useable everyday driver than a weekend classic. I'm thinking about swapping out the single carb for a dual carb and manifold from a Riley of the same series. Do you, or anyone on the forum, know if this is a straight swap? Uterus: Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I'd get better handling from the springs redone to original then lowered on blocks then just sagging old rusty springs. Plus they look better.
  5. No. Not higher. Just back to standard. They were almost curving back the other way. I'm not really into the idea of a lifted Traveller. Put some big knobby tires on it. Hahahah!
  6. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/40993-zipties-64-morris-oxford-traveller/ I'm thinking about putting a Datsun/Nissan A15 or L16/18 with a 5 speed transmission into this wagon. I've never done an engine swap before but it would turn this car into something reliable and capable of long distances. If any of you have advice to offer it would be much appreciated.
  7. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/40994-zipties-64-morris-oxford-traveller/ I picked this up off TradeMe a few months ago. She was in decent condition but had been neglected for a while. Looked like the owner just had a mechanic fix whatever caused it to fail a warrant. Here is what she looked like just after I bought it. (Picture taken at the Morris Registry of Auckland ride, good times ). I'll post some more photos when I figure out how to do it. I've gone through the engine, steam cleaned it, new distributor, wires, etc... electronic ignition, carb kit. Since then I decided to tackle the groan in the rear end... So, while the wife and kid were away over the long weekend I bought a couple boxes of lion red (in cans) and got to work tearing out the rear. Came out a lot easier than I thought it would. Took me about four hours: I found a second hand diff head with 69,000 miles on it. And swapped it in for the old one. Took me a couple hours, a liter of petrol and whole can of brake cleaner to scrape all the crap off the axle. But it came up pretty nice. God! Those universal joints were a mission! Never done those before. Took the leaf springs to Snell Springs in Onehunga to get them redone. They were sitting pretty flat. Looked good to be honest but I'd like a bit of suspension back there. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to move this chaos back onto the car:
